Album Review – Refusal / Venomous Human Concept (2025)

This Finnish beast returns with its third full-length opus, delivering a raw and unrelenting blend of Death Metal infused with Grindcore and Hardcore elements.

Formed in Helsinki, Finland, in early 2008, Death Metal/Grindcore outfit Refusal is set to unleash upon humanity their third full-length album, entitled Venomous Human Concept, the follow-up to their 2019 offering Epitome of Void. Delivering a raw and unrelenting blend of Death Metal infused with Grindcore and Hardcore elements, striking a perfect balance between groove-driven intensity and razor-sharp precision, the band currently formed of Juhani Paasipohja on vocals, Tero Pirhonen and Kalle Kuosmanen on the guitars, Timo Pirhonen on bass, and Aleksi Roitto on drums is on fire throughout their entire new album, with the sharp mixing by Olli Nokkala at Studio Kolotila and the first-class mastering by Henri Sorvali at Trollhouse Audio turning it into a must-listen for fans of Napalm Death, Misery Index, Entombed, and Rotten Sound, among several others.

Tero and Kalle will cut your skin deep with their dirty, caustic riffs in Scholar of Perversion, while Juhani already barks and roars like a creature from darkness. The title-track Venomous Human Concept tells a story of rising up against the ruling class, and the ones who hold the wealth and power; musically speaking, it’s a demented hybrid of Death Metal and Grindcore led by the insane drums by Aleksi, followed by The Grip Tightens, sounding even more infuriated, or in other words, it’s a demonic display of Death Metal where Juhani vociferates rabidly nonstop. The band continues to spread hatred and violence in Insatiable God, with the scorching riffs by Tero and Kalle inspiring us all for some wild headbanging, and those Finnish death metallers show no mercy for our cranial skulls in War of Nothing, with Aleksi once again crushing his enemies behind his drums.

There’s no sign of the band slowing down or sounding mellower; quite the contrary, it’s total anarchy in Dehumanize, blasting our heads with their furious Death Metal onrush, whereas We Are the Undead is one of the most violent tracks of the entire album, overflowing aggression thanks to another venomous performance by Juhani with his demented roars and the always demolishing beats and fills by Aleksi. Their violent sounds continue to fill every single space in the air in Sleeping Leviathan, with the stringed axes by Tero, Kalle and Timo transpiring pure, unfiltered Death Metal magic. There’s still time to slam into the pit to the hybrid of Death Metal with Grindcore entitled Congregation of the Eyeless, again presenting an avalanche of piercing riffs and infernal growls, and the band then ends the album with the Doom Metal-infused Eternal Refrain, sounding dark and sinister until the very end, with the hammering drums by Aleksi feeling utterly chaotic.

After all is said and done, Venomous Human Concept, which is available for purchase from the band’s own BandCamp or from the Time To Kill Records’ webstore, will definitely help Refusal cement their name not only in the always incendiary local Finnish scene, but also all over the world where our good old Death Metal is properly appreciated, and you can also support those hellish metallers by following them on Facebook and on Instagram, and by streaming their discography on Spotify. In other words, get ready to be pulverized by Refusal to the sound of Venomous Human Concept because, as you might already know, Death Metal is their business, and business is good.

Finish your plate and buckle in, as Finland’s own Brutal Death Metal creature returns with their depraved seventh studio album, their first dive into twisted fairytale territory.

Finish your plate and buckle in, as Turku, Varsinais-Suomi, Finland’s own Brutal Death Metal creature Cumbeast is back with Fairytales Of Filth, their seventh full-length album and the follow-up to their 2019 opus Gore Zoo. Recorded and mixed by Tomi Uusitupa at Oxroad Studios, mastered By Miro Kiiski at Miro Mastering, and embracing new textures without losing sight of their signature groove-heavy and aggressive sound, now enriched by melodic twists, folk influences, and a handful of surprising collaborations the likes of Sami Perttula (Korpiklaani) and John Puig (Phrymerial), the new album by Snoop Rott on vocals and bass, and Rob ‘O Cock on the guitars and additional vocals, plus former drummer Mikko “Fleshpipe Mike” Konki (who left the band after recording the album last year, being replaced by Stinky Minky this year) is their first dive into twisted fairytale territory, pushing their trademark blend of brutal grooves, blast beats, fretless bass, and guttural absurdism into even stranger places.

Cummando sounds and feels heavy-as-hell from the very first second thanks to the scorching riffs by Rob and the venomous beats by Mikko, while Snoop inspires us to slam like true metal beasts; followed by Metham Of Gotham, a first-class Brutal Death Metal extravaganza led by the deep, evil roars by Snoop, perfect for some wild mosh pit action. Then featuring guests Sami Perttula (Korpiklaani) on accordion and John Puig (Phrymerial) on vocals and intro speech we have Captain Cock, where the music sounds as demented as the “story” of its main character; and guest Lukas Swiaczny (Stillbirth) delivers some sick vocal lines in Abacus Of Testicles, with the band’s pounding drums and vicious riffage turning it into a must-listen for fans of the style. Then it’s time for Henri Sorvali (Finntroll, Moonsorrow) to blast some wicked synths in Troll Named Scrot, adding even more insanity to their core heaviness.

Åbomination is another hammering tune by those depraved bastards, with the deep vociferations by Snoop sounding truly inhumane; whereas a lot of groove flows from Snoop’s bass and Mikko’s drums in Forest Fap Frenzy, sounding at the same time perfect for slamming into the pit or for simply enjoying a cold beer in the name of our beloved Brutal Death Metal. In Ghostfuckers I’m not sure if their intention was to add some sort of Rap-like vibe to its core, but it’s by far the weakest of all due to that; and last but definitely not least, Cumbeast still has enough energy to melt our putrid faces with the cryptic, cinematic Spermafrost, sounding like a bulldozer from hell with the guitar by Rob exhaling pure heaviness.

In summary, if you’re a fan of the absurdity and gore crafted by bands such as Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Stillbirth, Aborted, and Party Cannon, you’ll definitely have a very good time listening to the ruthless, visceral Fairytales Of Filth, taking you on a one-way journey into a rotten land where all fairytales end in pure filth. The guys from Cumbeast are waiting for you on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Spotify with more of their depraved music, news, tour dates, and an endless dosage of sonic filth, and of course you can show them how demented you are by purchasing a copy of their new album from their own BandCamp. Because although some people might think they live in a fairytale, it’s albums like Fairytales Of Filth by Cumbeast that show those people that the reality is a lot harsher and more gruesome than any type of extreme music.

Album Review – Lord Of Pagathorn / Age Of Curse (2021)

This unrelenting horde is ready to strike again with their newborn spawn of vicious, death-reaping Finnish Black Metal.

lord-of-pagathorn-age-of-curse-2021Hailing from Finland’s capital Helsinki, the unrelenting Black Metal horde that goes by the name of Lord Of Pagathorn is ready to strike again with their newborn spawn, entitled Age Of Curse, bringing to our ears eight original songs of death-reaping Finnish Black Metal crafted by vocalist and guitarist Corpselord, guitarist Skrubb, bassist Ronitor and drummer Skalder. Recorded by the band’s own Ronitor, who was also responsible for the album’s sick artwork, and mixed and mastered by Trollhorn (aka Henri Sorvali) at Trollhouse Audio, Age Of Curse is Lord Of Pagathorn’s most detailed and cohesive opus since the band’s inception in the distant year of 1992 in the city of Rovaniemi, showing those black metallers still have a lot of fire to burn in their path of evil and darkness.

A cryptic, sinister intro titled Burning Ominous Words sets the stage for the Finnish quartet to kill in Baneful Curse To Destroy Them All, with Corpselord and Skrubb delivering old school Black Metal riffs while Skalder hammers his drums nonstop. Put differently, it couldn’t have sounded rawer, more devilish nor more traditional than this, and continuing their feast of pure malignancy, Corpselord leads his infernal horde with his wicked gnarls while Ronitor and Skalder will make your head tremble with their hellish kitchen in Conqueror of Im-Kharasak. Then slowing things down a bit and adding a visceral dosage of Doom Metal to their core madness, the band fires the headbanging Insatiability of Man, with Ronitor’s bass jabs supporting the strident guitars by Corpselord and Skrubb; whereas their Black Magic-infused riffage will pierce our souls mercilessly in Over Throned, while Skalder dictates the pace through his intricate yet bestial beats in an awesome display of pure Black Metal.

The title-track Age of Curse is a lecture in old school, unfiltered Black Metal by Lord Of Pagathorn, with the band’s guitar duo being in total (and infernal) sync with Skalder’s drums, not to mention how vile the screeches and roars by Corpselord are, and more of their spine-chilling sounds permeate the air in the venomous Crush The Holy Spirit, a nonstop hurricane of Black Metal riffs, beats and growls that will please all fans of classics the likes of Mayhem, Immortal and Marduk. There’s no time to breathe as the band’s Stygian onrush of sounds goes on in Prophecy of Androgyne Being, bringing to our avid ears more of Corpselord’s demonic screams amidst a pulverizing and melodic sonority. And last but not least, the gates of hell are wide open to the sound of the sluggish and grim Dragging in the Dust, another wicked Black Metal extravaganza spearheaded by the neck-breaking beats by Skalder, all spiced up by Doom Metal elements carefully inserted into the band’s trademark sound.

Lord Of Pagathorn are one of those bands that will always be loyal to the foundations of Black Metal, having followed the dark path since their very first demo released in 1993, and based on the sulfur and obscurity flowing from their excellent new opus I’m pretty sure the Black Metal scene in their homeland Finland will stand strong for decades to come.
