Album Review – Vultur / Cultores de Perdas e Linna (2025)

One of the very first Black Metal acts featuring lyrics in Sardinian Campidanese language returns with a magnificent opus dedicated to the occultism and folk superstitions of their homeland.

Aggressive, unmerciful and fast-paced, showcasing intriguing riffs and a certain degree of dark violence, Portoscuso, Sardinia, Italy’s most devilish Black Metal horde Vultur, one of the very first Black Metal acts featuring lyrics in Sardinian Campidanese language, with themes about Sardinian occultism and folk superstitions, returns to the battlefield with their third full-length opus, entitled Cultores de Perdas e Linna, following up on their critically acclaimed 2014 album Ogu Liau. Recorded by Alberto Bandino at Cut Fire Mixing Studio, and displaying a grim artwork by the band’s own bassist Maristella Spanu (taking inspiration from the Sardinian popular mask “Su Boe”, one of the most important characters of Sardinian Carnival tradition), Cultores de Perdas e Linna, which means “stone and woods worshippers” (which is how Christians derogatorily defined the ancient Nuragic population), features eight songs overflowing darkness, brutality and, of course, Sardinian occultism and folklore, all masterfully brought into being by vocalist and guitarist Nicola Fulgheri (aka Attalzu), guitarist Nicola Spaziani, bassist Maristella Spanu, and drummer Lorenzo Balia.

Attalzu wastes no time and begins vociferating rabidly from the very first second in Su Frastimu, a pulverizing, sinister Black Metal onrush that gets even more cryptic thanks to its words in Sardinian Campidanese; and Maristella and Lorenzo fire a Marduk-like evil kitchen in Eternu Trumentu, again darkening the skies in the name of classic Black Metal. The band shows absolutely no signs of slowing or toning down their music in Su Spegu, with Lorenzo smashing his drums like a beast accompanied by the visceral riffage by Attalzu and Nicola. And Maristella continues to hammer her ruthless bass in Femina Mala, while Attalzu summons absolute darkness through his devilish growls.

After such a hurricane of Black Metal, we have the atmospheric interlude Arestis, setting the stage for Vultur to crush our damned souls in Cultores Lapides et Lignea, with the deep, imposing vociferations by Attalzu sending shivers down our spines while Lorenzo once again sounds demonic behind his drums, not to mention the scorching riffage by Nicola transpires Black Metal magic. Then adding the heaviest elements from Death Metal to their core sonority, its time for a deep, infernal tune by the quartet named Umbras, where all instruments sound as austere as possible, in special the demented drums by Lorenzo, flowing into the beyond atmospheric Nemini Parco, starting in a somber Gregorian chant manner before exploding into one final blackened attack by the band, led by the infuriated riffs and bass by Nicola and Maristella, respectively.

Sardinia is the island whose ancient population dates back to the Bronze Age, featuring a rich archaic history and culture, and whose folklore still breaths nowadays within its fond population. Having said that, it’s truly amazing that a band like Vultur also helps to keep that spirit alive through Black Metal, which is in my humble opinion the perfect music genre to represent any form of folklore or occultism, and Cultores de Perdas e Linna is a flawless depiction of the band’s talent and devotion to their homeland, being highly recommended for fans of Satyricon, Marduk, Mayhem, Immortal, Dissection, and Rotting Christ, among others. You can find those Italian creatures on Facebook and on Instagram, stream their music on Spotify, and above all that, purchase their new album from the Masked Dead Records’ BandCamp or webstore as a CD or as a very special Cultores de Perdas e Linna CD + Unholy Impurity CD bundle. Sardinian folklore has always been a very interesting and vibrant topic, but let’s say Vultur definitely know how to spice it up considerably armed with their breathtaking Black Metal attack.

Album Review – Ignobleth / Voidspawn Sacrifice EP (2024)

This young and restless Italian Black Metal trio is ready to wage war upon us armed with their violent debut offering.

Born from the need to bring to mortals the truest war spirit, Northern Italy-based Black/Death Metal horde Ignobleth, whose young members are only 16 and 17 years old, merges fast and frenetic riffs and blast beats to slow and macabre sections in order to create a sinister and obscure atmosphere. Now in 2024 it’s time for vocalist and bassist Bloodlord Ixiataaga, guitarist Nex VII, and drummer Kommander Baal to crush our damned souls with their debut EP Voidspawn Sacrifice, offering us all 15 minutes of what they like to label as “War Metal” in a fun and vibrant album nicely recorded at Atomic Arts Studios and co-produced with Sulphur Music.

The ominous intro Golgotha VII will take you to the Stygian world ruled by Ignobleth, darkening your putrid souls before they attack you with Bestial Witchery, a venomous Black Metal extravaganza that sounds taken from the glory of the 80’s and 90’s, although the band members were all born in the 2000’s, and where Bloodlord Ixiataaga’s gruesome vocals sound demonic while always accompanied by the ruthless riffs by Nex VII. Then adding elements of Doom Metal to their already infernal sonority it’s time for the cryptic, sulfurous Omen Of A Nuclear Spell, with Kommander Baal taking the lead with his sluggish and heavy-as-hell beats. Lastly, back to a more visceral, demented sound, the band brings forth the Black Metal onrush Wrathful Eradication, inviting us all to worship Satan while slamming into the circle pit to their solid fusion of Black and Death Metal, spearheaded by the guttural roars by Bloodlord Ixiataaga.

The infernal trio formed of Bloodlord Ixiataaga, Nex VII and Kommander Baal is waiting for you in their Stygian lair on Facebook and on Instagram, where you can get more details about their underground black masses (also known as live performances), and you can definitely put your dirty hands on Voidspawn Sacrifice by purchasing it from the Masked Dead Records’ BandCamp or webstore. It’s really cool to see fresh young blood crafting high quality Black Metal, paving a great future ahead of the band and the genre, and may those talented Italian musicians keep waging war with more of their caustic music in the form of several thrilling albums like their debut EP in the coming years.

Album Review – Scent Of Darkness / Insanitude EP (2020)

Touching themes like depression, psychosis and solitude, the debut album by this promising Italian project will take you on a one-way journey to the desolate lands of doom.

Formed in 2018 in Brescia, a city in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, Funeral Doom project Scent Of Darkness was born from the artistic expression of the band’s mastermind and guitarist Gianluca Moreo, known from his work with Vereor Nox, aiming at delivering lugubrious and unsettling doom tailored for fans of bands like Saturnus, Novembers Doom and Ahab. Now in 2020, after partnering with vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lorenzo Telve (from Canticum Diaboli), Gianluca and his Scent Of Darkness are unleashing upon us the project’s debut EP entitled Insanitude, a concept album which speaks of psychological and social experiences lived in first person by Gianluca himself, touching themes like depression, psychosis, abandonment, mistrust, delirium, solitude and hope. And let me tell you that the final result, consisting of four Depressive Funeral Doom Metal songs with painful, desolated and sick traits, will certainly leave you completely disoriented after the album’s 30 macabre and sluggish minutes are over.

The somber acoustic guitars by Gianluca kick off the first track of the EP, the grim Reborn, being gradually accompanied by Lorenzo’s slow and steady beats and an enfolding atmosphere, with Lorenzo growling deeply and demonically and, consequently, resulting in a black mass of Funeral Doom for admirers of the genre. Then featuring lyrics by Alex Gothnesia and guest vocals by Gray Ravenmoon (Hateful Desolation), Trust Issues sounds even heavier and more caustic than the opening tune, with Gianluca and Lorenzo generating a menacing ambience with their Stygian riffs, bass jabs and drums, and with the raspy and hellish roars by Gray bringing an extra dosage of malignancy to their already visceral Doom Metal, followed by Crowded Solitude, another brutal, smashing Doom Metal extravaganza led by the funereal drums by Lorenzo while Gianluca keeps extracting sheer obscurity from his razor-edge riffs, sounding perfect for savoring each second in pitch black darkness. And last but not least, anguished spoken words will penetrate deep inside your psyche in the 10-minute aria entitled Whispers From Nowhere, where the band’s infernal duo continues to pave a sinister and dark path with their rumbling music, also presenting cryptic passages, eerie narrations, endless solitude and savage madness, all embraced by the gruesome gnarls by Lorenzo while the music flows like a dark river from hell until the song’s grandiose finale.

This 30-minute ode to all things doom can be better appreciated in full on YouTube, but of course I highly recommend you purchase a copy of the album from the Masked Dead Records’ BandCamp page or from Discogs to show your support to such up-and-coming Italian project, keeping the flames of doom burning in the depths of the underworld of heavy music. Also, you can get to know more about Scent Of Darkness by following the project on Facebook and by subscribing to its YouTube channel, darkening your heart and your thoughts even more as you join Gianluca in his one-way journey to hopelessness and desolation. If this high-end and very detailed EP is just the first release by Scent Of Darkness, I wonder where the project can go in the Doom Metal universe, leaving all fans of the slow, visceral and somber side of doom eager for more of his unrelenting creations in a not-so-distant future.
