Album Review – Golem Of Gore / Ultimo Mondo Cane (2025)

Emerging from the boiling bowels of horrendous vomit and uncompromising gore, this unrelenting Italian Goregrind brigade will attack armed with their filthy sophomore album.

Emerging from the boiling bowels of horrendous vomit and uncompromising gore, the unrelenting Italian Goregrind brigade Golem Of Gore is finally back with their most faceted, dramatic yet filthier work, entitled Ultimo Mondo Cane, or “last dog world” in English, a monstrous battle hymn for all the gore freaks out there. Recorded by Marco Carboni, mixed and mastered by Davide Guerri (with vinyl mastered by Carlo Altobelli at Toxic Basement Studio), and displaying a sick artwork by James Wilson with collage art by Adam Medford, the sophomore album by vocalist Riki, guitarist Marco, bassist Bonne, and drummer Dave is an overdose of savagery and blast beats, proving only gore is real and, of course, being recommended for admirers of the music by Last Days Of Humanity, Regurgitate, Pissgrave, and Caustic Wound, among several others bringers of gore worldwide.

The album starts with the cryptic, devilish movie-like intro Cruelty Abounds On This Planet, opening the gates of horror and gore and, therefore, letting Golem of Gore invade our world and kill us all in The Fragrance Of Pus – Filled Eyes of the Dead, with Riki’s demented, deep guttural sounding absolutely bestial. In Regurgitated Entrails With Intense Mortification the name of the song says it all, offering an overdose of savagery led by the insane drums by Dave; whereas guest Gabri from Terror Firmer delivers screaming devastation in Withdrawal Crisis – Through the Keyhole of Madness, elevating its gore and insanity considerably. The visceral riffs by Marco will slash your entrails in In The Cold Room Of My Restaurant, You Are Dog Food, while in L’isola maledetta – Immersed In A Formaldehyde Coffin all members of Slug Gore (those being Amianto, Fuoco and Sbocco) unite for total gore and devastation. The Slasher in Black Latex – Acrid Aroma In Tenebris is the perfect depiction of the band’s infuriated blend of Grindcore, whereas A Prayer From The Filthy Creatures Of The Deep presents one and a half minute of brutal slamming led by the demented drumming by Dave, which is also the case in Buried in Feces – Ultimo Mondo Cane.

Then we face the spine-chilling interlude La Montagna della Dea Cannibale before guest Tom from Haggus spews filth in Chronic Obstructive Caustic Vomit, a ruthless, wild display of Goregrind perfect for slamming into the pit like a true metalmaniac. Fucked By The Shovel, Thrown Into Violent Screams is another song with a charming name displaying the always gruesome roars by Riki, followed by Methamphetamine – Drenched In Piss And Gore, another minute of pure Grindcore with their riffs and blast beats sounding inhumane. The two part song formed of Through The Gates of Hell – Una tomba aperta and Back From The Gates of Hell – Una bara vuota showcases a band that only knows the language of gore; followed by The Final Feast of the Damned – Tre Passi nel delirio, with Marco and Bonne destroying their stringed axes. Cannibal Banquet for the Lord of Flies – Maggots Throne is an ode to the most putrid and horrid Italian horror movies, offering excellence in pure gore and heaviness, before all comes to an end with Senza Uscita – Worse Than Reality, a virulent, putrid outro that will haunt your damned souls for all eternity.

Album Review – Heiden / Andzjel (2022)

Wandering across different genres and inspirations, this Czech Progressive Black Metal entity offer in their ninth studio album a stunning view of the inhospitable beauty of the White Carpathians.

Having started up in 2003 as a Pagan Black Metal band, Brno, Czech Republic-based Progressive Black Metal entity Heiden wanders across different genres and inspirations, returning now in 2022 to a Dark Metal sound with their newborn opus entitled Andzjel, or “angel” in English, their ninth studio album expanding the perspectives of their audience base through dark, elegant and atmospherically authentic music. Mixed and mastered by Karl Daniel Lidén at Tri-Lamb Studio, and displaying a classy artwork taken from the personal collection of inhabitants of the Žítková village and repainted by Luděk Řezáč, Andzjel presents seven songs thematically set in the inhospitable beauty of the White Carpathians, offering an insight into the souls of the local people, sharing the soil, blood, healing and knowledge passed down through generations, showcasing not only the talent but also the deep connection the band comprised of vocalist, guitarist and bassist Kverd, guitarist Tom, keyboardist Werlinga and drummer Einsk have with their homeland.

The strident guitars by Kverd and Tom ignite the imposing opening tune Nevěřím těm očím (“I can’t believe those eyes” from Czech), blending elements from Progressive and Symphonic Black Metal and, consequently, generating a Stygian atmosphere perfect for the cryptic gnarls by Kverd; and switching gears to a more melodic and melancholic vibe we’re treated to V hodině vlka (“in the hour of the wolf”), getting closer to modern-day Post-Metal while Einsk does a beautiful job with his minimalist beats and Werlinga’s keys embellish the airwaves in great fashion. Continuing to showcase their more Jazz-ish side, Musím ti tolik říct (“I have so much to tell you”) brings to our ears another ass-kicking round of keys by Werlinga accompanied by the classy guitars by Kverd and Tom, followed by Září (“September”), as wicked and obscure as its predecessors, sounding very detailed and enfolding from the very first second with Eisnk alternating between shee violence and more intimate, rhythmic beats, resulting in a lecture in Post-Metal infused with tons of progressiveness.

Sviť, měsíčku, jasno, an adaptation of a Moravian folklore song from the Kopanice region that means “shine, moon, clear”, brings forward two and a half minutes of experimentations and eerie sounds, which could have been extended to something more complete instead of working as just an interlude, though, whereas Běsů se nezbavíš, or “you can’t get rid of demons”, is another solid hybrid of Progressive Metal and Post-Rock and Metal, at the same time soothing your soul before smashing you with a visceral sonic attack led by the devilish vocals by Kverd. Lastly, the quartet will captivate our senses once again in Patřím sem (“I belong here”), with Werlinga and Eisnk being  in absolute sync with their respective keys and beats, not to mention how caustic the guitars by Kverd and Tom sound, consequently putting a dark and climatic ending to the album.

Album Review – Captain Naysayer / Captain Naysayer EP (2021)

All aboard the Rock N’ Roll vessel captained by a talented five-piece Belgian crew, taking you on a trip through the unruly waters of rock and metal music to the sound of their self-titled debut EP.

Starting as a wet dream of guitarist Daan and drummer Evert from a Belgian rock band named The DeVilles, Keerbergen, Belgium-based Rock N’ Roll/Hard Rock act Captain Naysayer are ready to rock your world to the sound of their self-titled debut EP, bringing to the table a fun and vibrant sound inspired by 70’s Rock N’ Roll. Comprised of the aforementioned Daan and Evert together with their countrymen Tom on keyboards and Bert on bass, as well as Brazilian vocalist Arthur, who by the way joined the band from overseas after seeing their online post to lure some candidates for the job, Captain Naysayer take no prisoners in their quest for classic rock and metal, offering to us all six undisputed songs that go from the most classic form of Rock N’ Roll to heavier and more melodic passages, and the final result will certainly put you to dance and bang your heads together with the boys like there’s no tomorrow.

Arising from the bottom of the ocean like a true kraken, Captain Naysayer start blasting their 70’s Rock N’ Roll in Black Silhouette, spearheaded by the smashing beats by Evert and the classic vocals by Arthur, with the Axel Rudi Pell-inspired keys by Tom being the icing on the cake. And more of their old school rock music is offered in the form of Changes, where Daan’s soulful riffs and Bert’s low-tuned bass add an extra touch of nostalgia to the overall result, not to mention how rhythmic and pleasant the drumming by Evert sounds; followed by Voodoo Lovin’, an amazing display of Psychedelic Rock with a Southern Rock twist where the lyrics declaimed by Arthur couldn’t have been more Hard Rock than this (“Since we first met you put me through a test / Going through the ringer on the tip of your finger / It was hard each day just to get a little closer to you / It was like a spell, it was like a trance / Nothing in my mind except for the desire / For the fire that was burning in between your legs”).

After such powerful start, the second half of the EP kicks off with I See Danger, showcasing a Placebo-like vibe in Arthur’s strident vocals accompanied by some tribalistic elements and the Rock N’ Roll riffage by Daan. In addition, tons of progressiveness flows from all instruments, with Tom’s keys bringing electricity and epicness to their core sound in another ode to rock and metal music. Then smooth keys and a whimsical atmosphere suddenly explode into a Jethro Tull-like sonority in Blue Eyed Mask, a delicate ballad by Captain Naysayer where the vocals by Arthur exhale poetry and melancholy from start to finish, whereas they showcase their Deep Purple vein and passion for classic Progressive Rock and Metal in the closing tune Living Again, where Tom is on fire with his ass-kicking keys while Evert and Bert bring the Blues to the music, all spiced up by an incendiary performance by Arthur on vocals while ending in the most vibrant way imaginable.
