Concert Review – Sepultura (London Music Hall, London, ON, 05/02/2026)

The Canadian city of London witnessed for the very first (and last) time ever the undisputed power of “Sepultura do Brasil” on an unforgettable night of first-class heavy music.

OPENING ACTS: Tribal Gaze, Biohazard and Exodus

After back to back nights of pure heavy music with bands like Archspire, Amon Amarth and Dethklok kicking my ass in Toronto on Thursday and Friday, it was time for a nice drive to the city of London for night number 3 of absolute metal magic to enjoy TRIBAL GAZEBIOHAZARDEXODUS and SEPULTURA take the cozy London Music Hall by storm this Saturday night as part of their Celebrating Life Through Death Final North American Tour 2026, another killer event organized by our local hero Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment. Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi was there with me to register such a great celebration of Thrash, Death and Groove Metal, as well as some first-class Hardcore, and I guess because the show was on a Saturday, and due to the size of the bands playing, it was scheduled for an early start, with doors opening at 5:30pm and the first band hitting the stage at 6:30pm. Fortunately, as mentioned, it was on a Saturday, so it was just a matter of planning the drive beforehand to get there in time to enjoy all attractions (and brave the long merch line if you were up to that), and believe me, they were all absolutely worth the ticket.

The opening slot of this tour was given to Texan Death Metal outfit TRIBAL GAZE, and just like when I saw them opening for Cattle Decapitation they were ruthless onstage. Once again playing songs exclusively from their 2025 sophomore Inveighing Brilliance, available on both BandCamp and Spotify, including the venomous Twitching on the Cross, Guarding the Illusion, and Beyond Recognition, the band formed of McKenna Holland on vocals, Quintin Stauts and Ian Kilmer on the guitars, Zachary Denton on bass, and Cesar De Los Santos on drums inspired everyone already at the venue to start a sick circle pit, properly warming up the crowd for the other attractions of the night. Those guys are very young and looked extremely excited for opening for some of their metal heroes, as I’m sure they grew up listening to Sepultura, Exodus and Biohazard, so their level of energy onstage was insanely high. As I always say, new bands like Tribal Gaze need our support to keep metal alive, which means if they ever play in your city, you know what to do.

After Tribal Gaze finished their unrelenting performance, we were treated to the incendiary Hardcore by Brooklyn, New York’s most famous squad, the indomitable BIOHAZARD. It was only my second time in life seeing those guys live, the first back in the late 90’s when they were one of the must-see bands on MTV, and I must say they looked a lot sharper and more infuriated this Saturday night. Evan Seinfeld is in fantastic shape, way better than his early days or when he was one of the prisoners in the revolutionary TV series Oz, and if I ever have a chance to talk to him in person I’ll certainly ask him for some health tips as he looks awesome. Billy Graziadei, Bobby Hambel and Danny Schuler were also on fire, and their short but sweet setlist, blending classics with new songs from their 2025 album Divided We Fall (all available on Spotify), was heavy, flammable, violent and fun from start to finish, igniting a demonic circle pit that turned up the heat considerably at the venue. Biohazard still got it, no doubt about it, and I’m happy I was able to see those legends live again after almost 30 years.

Then it was time for another blast of absolute thrashing madness onstage with the mighty Thrash Metal titans EXODUS, who after the return of the furious Rob Dukes are sounding even heavier than before. I saw them opening for Megadeth also in London in February, when they kicked off their tour to promote their new album Goliath (also available on Spotify), but this time opening for Sepultura sounded a lot heavier (and louder, as the sound at the London Concert Hall was turned up to 11). The setlist wasn’t too different from last time, but the fact they added the magnificent Deathamphetamine to it made their show more violent and vibrant. It’s always a pleasure seeing Gary Holt, Lee Altus, Jack Gibson and Tom Hunting onstage, as well as the aforementioned Rob Dukes, of course, but the show was so intense we all had to share our attention with the hurricane happening inside the circle pit. Well, when the last three songs of a setlist are A Lesson in Violence, The Toxic Waltz, and Strike of the Beast, you know you can’t simply stand and watch the show. You need to get into the action, and the fans in London understood the message maybe even more than what anyone could have predicted. Yes, it was a true lesson in violence, and we must thank the one and only Exodus for such a fun time.

SEPULTURA

It was already past 9pm when the main band of the night, Brazilian Thrash/Groove Metal institution SEPULTURA, kicked off their very first, and most probably their very last (as this is supposed to be their farewell tour), concert in the city of London, and the fans made sure it was an unforgettable night for Derrick Green, Andreas Kisser, Paulo Jr., and Greyson Nekrutman, as the crowd was rowdy and wild during their entire setlist, even when they played slower or newer songs like The Place (from their brand new EP The Cloud of Unknowing, already available in any platform such as Spotify) and Agony of Defeat. The crowd got louder of course during their classics from the 90’s, but the synchronicity between Sepultura and the fans in London was a thing of beauty during the entire concert.

Speaking of classics, I simply loved the fact they kicked off the show with Beneath the Remains and Inner Self, two of my all-time favorite Sepultura songs, and the quartet sounded utterly heavy during those masterpieces. The action inside the pit got out of control, the fans began smashing each other on the front rows to the point some people had to move to the back to be able to breathe and enjoy the rest of the show, and the fact they kept playing heavy and visceral tunes the likes of Attitude, Choke and Escape to the Void turned the venue into a cauldron of violence. The excellent tribal hymn Kaiowas brought some moments of peace to London, but of course all hell broke loose again once they played in a row the majestic Orgasmatron, Territory, Refuse/Resist and Arise. It was way crazier than their show in Toronto in 2024, I must admit.

Then after a quick drum solo by the ultra talented Greyson Nekrutman, who fells absolutely at home with Sepultura, the band put everyone to jump up and down, dance, slam into the pit, and therefore have the time of their lives with Ratamahatta, and of course with one of the best metal songs of all time, the incendiary Roots Bloody Roots. If that was indeed the first and last time Sepultura played in London, let’s say they did a phenomenal job, carving their place in the hearts of a lot of newcomers to their Sepulnation as countless fans were seeing them live for the very first time ever. I’ve seen them live already way too many times to remember, but I’ll never forget the energy in London. I had a long drive back home by myself in the middle of the night, but the adrenaline from the show was still flowing through my veins, making the drive a lot easier. Thank you for your music, Sepultura do Brasil, and if you want to somehow “cancel” your retirement and go back to London for another killer show, we will all be there for you.

Concert Review – Cattle Decapitation (The Concert Hall, Toronto, ON, 12/06/2025)

And Toronto partied like it was 1349 together with the mighty Cattle Decapitation on a emotional, memorable and heavy-as-hell night of extreme music.

OPENING ACTS: Grindmother, Tribal Gaze, Frozen Soul and Aborted

After seeing four albums played in full in the past couple of weeks, those being Rivers of Nihil (by Rivers of Nihil), Citadel and Exul (by Ne Obliviscaris), and Somewhere Far Beyond (by Blind Guardian), it was time for another absolute blast with album number five this Saturday, when the indomitable CATTLE DECAPITATION, with the support of GRINDMOTHER, TRIBAL GAZE, FROZEN SOUL and ABORTED, took the stage of The Concert Hall in Toronto with their No Fear For Tomorrow North American Tour 2025 to melt our faces with the full play of their 2019 bestial opus Death Atlas. That was maybe one of the heaviest and most emotional events brought to the city by Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment this year, and of course Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were there to be part of such a phenomenal celebration of extreme music by some of the best bands of the current scene worldwide.

As it was a Saturday I managed to get to the venue just in time for the farewell concert by the mighty GRINDMOTHER, a 77-year old retired social worker from Canada whose footage from a rehearsal in 2016 went viral, having played over 50 times live with her bands across Germany, Japan, Canada and the United States (and you can enjoy all of her songs on BandCamp, by the way). In July 2025, she announced her retirement due to dementia, kicking ass on the stages in Montreal on Friday and in Toronto on Saturday as her way to say “thank you” and “au revoir” to all Canadians who have supported her through the years. In Toronto she had the phenomenal support of the she-wolf Chelsea Marrow of Blackened Death Metal beast Visitant (who I had the pleasure of chatting with for a brief moment) and of the electrifying Elizabeth Selfish of Crossover Hardcore act BRAT, adding even more adrenaline to a very emotional goodbye from the stages. I’m sure her son Rayny Forster, who plays bass with her live, is immensely proud of his mom, a strong and relentless woman who proved once again there’s no age limit when it comes to heavy music. It was an excellent warmup for the other bands of the night, and hopefully Grindmother can now enjoy her retirement in great fashion together with her family while listening to some ass-kicking Extreme Metal. Thank you for your music and for your passion for Heavy Metal, Grindmother!

After a quick break it was time for Texas-based Death Metal brigade TRIBAL GAZE to ignite some wild mosh pits in the floor section with their short but extremely violent and heavy performance. Led by the charismatic frontman McKenna Holland, the band has just released the excellent Inveighing Brilliance, available on both BandCamp and on Spotify, which was basically what they played during their entire set. Songs like Smiling From Their Chariots and Emptying the Nest sounded inhumane live, with drummer Cesar De Los Santos dictating the pace of his own band and of the entire crowd, who went mental inside the pit and slammed like there’s no tomorrow. I’m sure we’ll hear more from those talented guys in a not-so-distant future, and I can’t wait to see one of their concerts again as they definitely know how to make our good old Death Metal sound incredible live.

The next attraction of the night is one of those bands you know they’ll quickly become a reference in the genre. I’m talking about Fort Worth, Texas’ own abominable men (and woman) FROZEN SOUL, bringing absolute chaos, frost and heaviness to the stage with their ruthless blend of old school Death Metal. Playing songs from their two awesome albums Crypt of Ice, form 2021, and Glacial Domination, from 2023 (both available on BandCamp and on Spotify), plus a few new killer tunes like Skinned by the Wind and Invoke War, from their upcoming yet-to-be-titled 2026 album, the band led by the unstoppable Chad Green on vocals (who also gave an emotional speech by dedicating one of the songs to his deceased younger brother, therefore showing a lot of heart) put everyone to slam, stage dive, crowd surf, and even do some push ups during their incredible performance, leaving us completely disoriented after all was said and done. One thing I must say about their concert is that the sound quality was superb, allowing the bass by the fantastic Samantha Mobley to punch us hard in the head for our total delight. Needless to say, she’ll (very) soon be one of our metal ladies of the month. I’m now desperate to listen to their upcoming album, because based on what we were able to witness this Saturday, it’s going to be a real banger. Hell yeah, winter is coming again, courtesy of one of the must-see names of the current Death Metal scene.

After everyone had a short break for having another beer, checking the merch stands, going to the washroom, or simply recovering their energies from the chaotic show by Frozen Soul, it was time to “get do da choppa!” together with the unparalleled Belgian Death Metal machine ABORTED, and oh boy, what an apocalyptic performance it was. Sven De Caluwé was not only on fire with his demented guttural, but he was also in his best comedian mode, impersonating the best action hero of all time, the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger, multiple times, making jokes with his own mother, and asking fans to do some jumping jacks during one of the songs (after pushups and jumping jacks, I was wondering if Cattle Decapitation were going to ask us to do some abs later). What an amazing frontman, and let’s say their setlist helped him a lot, with several songs form their 2024 masterpiece Vault of Horrors, including Dreadbringer, The Shape of Hate and Death Cult, plus classics the likes of Retrogore and The Saw and the Carnage Done, all available on BandCamp and on Spotify, setting fire to the atmosphere just like what happened during their headlining concert in Toronto in February. The icing on the cake happened when Darude’s pop hit Sandstorm was played over the speakers and Sven invited everyone to dance with him, showing we metalheads are not just anger, hatred and darkness. We can also dance. See you at the party, Sven!

CATTLE DECAPITATION

We witnessed an emotional farewell, had fun with two of of the new-ish names in Death Metal, and became part of a Belgian death cult this Saturday night. Was that enough for us avid metalheads? Of course not, because we still wanted to party like it was 1349 together with the almighty Progressive Death Metal/Grindcore creature CATTLE DECAPITATION, playing in full their 2019 opus Death Atlas, plus three songs form their 2023 killer album Terrasite, both available on BandCamp and on Spotify, and both paying “homage” to the putrid, gory and visceral downfall of the human race. It was pure Armageddon on stage, and of course that transpired to the floor section where the mosh pits were simply insane.

Anything I say about Travis Ryan at this point of his career is not enough to represent his importance, talent and passion in extreme music. The guy is unstoppable, ruthless, and his goblin screeches are one of those things you must experience live at least once in your miserable life. Songs like Be Still Our Bleeding Hearts, Vulturous, the phenomenal Bring Back the Plague, Death Atlas, and the humanity-is-doomed trio formed of A Photic Doom, We Eat Our Young and Scourge of the Offspring sounded brilliant live once again, and as Travis himself said they’ll be back in April or May I’m wondering if next time we’ll have Terrasite played in its entirety. I love when bands play their albums in full live, as I believe any album is meant to be listened in full without skipping any songs, so let’s wait and see what they’ll bring to the city in the coming months. I’ll be there for sure, because when Cattle Decapitation invites you to party (like it’s 1349), no is definitely NOT an answer.

Album Review – Tribal Gaze / Inveighing Brilliance (2025)

Arising from the scorched earth of Texas, this ruthless Death Metal creature conjures visions of primal wrath and nihilistic clarity in their vicious new album.

Arising from the scorched earth of Texas, the ruthless Death Metal creature known as Tribal Gaze returns with Inveighing Brilliance, a Death Metal monolith shaped by ancient violence and unforgiving truth. Comprised of McKenna Holland on vocals, Quintin Stauts and Ian Kilmer on the guitars, Zachary Denton on bass, and Cesar De Los Santos on drums, the band conjures visions of primal wrath and nihilistic clarity in their new album, a sound rooted in the rawness of old school Death Metal but sharpened with modern intent. With digital artwork by Dom Pabon of Final Resting Place that evokes sci-fi decay and meditations of ancient ruin, Inveighing Brilliance is a meditation on the illusion of beauty in nature and existence, and how it pertains to both Mother Nature, and our wretched, human society. Even in moments of light, brutality lurks, eggs are stolen from nests, flesh is torn for survival, and the album dissects this duality, revealing the suffering embedded in every living moment.

The opening track Smiling From Their Chariots is a two-minute massacre by the band where Cesar crushes his drums nonstop, offering McKenna everything he needs to gnarl like a rabid creature from the abyss, followed by Beyond Recognition, another demented composition that sounds absurdly heavy thanks to the phenomenal riffage by Quintin and Ian in a lecture in primeval Death Metal. They keep inviting us all to join them in their gruesome pit to the sound of Emptying the Nest, where Zachary and Cesar deliver a true metallic kitchen, and there’s no time for shenanigans or any type of filler in the album, as Guarding the Illusion showcases pure, old school Death Metal led by the venomous riffs by Quintin and Ian, whereas you can feel the rage and despair flowing from the  vocals by guest Ross Hansen of Ingrown in To the Spoils of Faith, while the Tribal Gaze crew blasts their instruments nonstop.

Ruling in a Land with No God offers our putrid ears another slab of absolute violence and heaviness led by their undisputed Death Metal riffs, followed by the inhumane The Irreversible Sequence, and I have no idea how they managed to craft such a primeval sound so perfectly, while McKenna roars and barks rabidly for our total delectation. Then after the experimental, weird interlude Inveighing Brilliance we’re treated to Draped in Piercing Radiance, led by the hammering drums by Cesar in the best Brutal Death Metal style, speeding things up while maintaining that gory sound we love so much in Death Metal. And last but not least, get ready for over six minutes of chaos, hatred and unfiltered Death Metal in the form of Lord of Blasphemy, with McKenna’s deep guttural walking hand in hand with the sick riffage by Quintin and Ian, presenting a killer drum solo by Cesar as its grand finale.

From their name, inspired by unseen forces watching from deep forests, to the crushing weight of their riffs, Tribal Gaze channel something ancient, unknown, and violently present, and with Inveighing Brilliance they’ve done just that, stripped away illusion, stared into the abyss, and made it echo, being therefore perfect for fans of 200 Stab Wounds, Frozen Soul, Creeping Death, Vomit Forth, Fuming Mouth, and Undeath, among others.
