Album Review – Behölder / In The Temple Of The Tyrant (2025)

This American horde will attack our senses with their debut opus, a true love letter to Epic Doom Metal inspired by classic Dungeons & Dragons.

Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States, Behölder are an Epic Doom/Dark/Power Metal band inspired by classic Dungeons & Dragons, formed in late 2021 by guitarist Carlos Alvarez. Produced by the same Carlos Alvarez, mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström at Björnström Ljud & Produktion, and displaying a stunning artwork by Zsofia Dankova, their debut opus, titled In The Temple Of The Tyrant, features eight tracks of monstrous proportions, a true love letter to Epic Doom Metal weaving cautionary tales from the more grim, foreboding realms of fantasy against a backdrop of colossal riffs with elegant yet powerful melodies, all carefully crafted by vocalist John Yelland, guitarists Carlos Alvarez and Matt Hodsdon, bassist Michael Sanchez, and drummer Andrew Julkowski.

A Pale Blood Sky begins in a strong doomed vibe thanks to the heavy riffs by Carlos and Matt, supported by the always thunderous bass by Michael, and let’s all headbang like beasts to the epic vocals by John because those are awesome. Then their melodious, penetrating guitar lines set the tone in Dungeon Crawl, another feast of Epic and Doom Metal with a thrilling galloping pace; and it’s time for an even heavier tune titled Into the Underdark, with the pounding drums by Andrew walking hand in hand with the deep vocals by John, not to mention how powerful the bass by Michael sounds. After that we face Eyes of the Deep (featuring guest vocalist Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis), which reminds me of some of the darkest creations by Black Sabbath with Dio, in special from when they were called Heaven & Hell, with the entire band sounding tight, epic and fierce until the very last second.

The band then fires a more introspective composition entitled For Those Who Fell, offering seven minutes of dark, sluggish passages rooted in classic Doom Metal, or in other words, it’s a beautiful dark ballad by the band. Then investing in a primeval, tribalistic sound we have Draconian (Slave or Master), as if it was part of a somber, obscure ritual, with the riffage by Carlos and Matt penetrating deep inside our skin in great fashion, followed by Summoned & Bound, which lacks the same energy and punch from the previous songs. John still delivers his share of epicness through his vocals, though. And lastly we’re treated to I Magus, an amazing blast of Epic Doom Metal led by the thunderous vocals by John while his bandmates not only craft a powerful sound, but their backing vocals are also spot-on, putting a phenomenal and obviously epic ending to the album.

As the band itself likes to say, their debut album offers us all avid listeners “magic, mayhem and riffs heavier than a storm giant’s ass,” being therefore highly recommended for fans of Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Sorcerer, and Memento Mori, among others. Album Review – Olkoth / At The Eye Of Chaos (2023)

A newborn Blackened Death Metal entity formed of seasoned underground musicians is ready to kill with their debut album, a deadly, ferocious extreme music feast that’s absolutely true to the band’s brutal and blackened roots.

Dedicated to the memory of Vance Reon Jeffcoat, former drummer of the band who died of cystic fibrosis in 2017 at the age of 36, At The Eye Of Chaos, the debut opus by Columbia, South Carolina-based Blackened Death Metal outfit Olkoth, is a deadly, ferocious extreme music feast taking the animosity of Nile and Hate Eternal and bringing it even further, while also taking inspiration from the occult, horror, mythology and corruption throughout history. Recorded and Produced by the band itself at Hexology Studios, mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström at Björnström Ljud & Produktion, and displaying an sick, nightmarish artwork by Paolo Girardi, the album offers a unique and brutal blend of Death and Black Metal by Zach Jeter on vocals and guitars, Hunter Ross also on the guitars, and Alex Rush on bass and backing vocals, supported by session drummer Krzysztof Klingbein (10 Plagues, Deathspawn, Resurrection), sounding utterly loyal and true to the band’s brutal and blackened roots.

The band’s devilish and obscure side arises majestically in the opening tune Alhazred, inspired by Abdul Alhazred, a fictional character created by American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, with Zach sounding inhumane on vocals while Krzysztof pounds his drums in the name of darkness. Then after such infernal start it’s time for more of the band’s acid lyrics in Incendiary Prayer (“For the lord who knows all that is / Has promised the crown of an Emperor / Giving power to the false / Who pray spinelessly to god as their greed becomes our overlord”), another bestial Death Metal creation by Olkoth; whereas the demonic riffs by Zach and Hunter are beautifully complemented by the metallic bass by Alex in The Resurrectionist, a heavy-as-hell, deep and dense metal attack that keeps the album as sulfurous as possible. And Thousand Faced Moon sounds and feels extremely intricate, or in other words, it’s a multi-layered and incendiary lecture in Blackened and Progressive Death Metal led by the venomous drumming by Krzysztof.

To Eat Of The Lotus is another excellent tune showcasing darkly poetic lyrics (“Lost within this self-made haze of gnarled delusion / You create deception to hide your life’s failures / Bury all of your demons; you’re too weak to face them / To eat of the lotus, you’ll abandon all that’s sacred”) and the demolishing kitchen by Alex and Krzysztof; and a sinister intro quickly explodes into a Stygian fusion of Black and Death Metal titled Eidolon In The Flames, with the guitars by Zach and Hunter exhaling sulfur while Zach deeply growls for our total delight. Following such high level of insanity we have Lords Of The Kali Yuga, one of the most devastating songs of the album (and let’s not forget it is already an album that overflows brutality and rage) where Zach leads his horde with his hellish screams supported by the stone crushing beats by Krzysztof, flowing into the title-track At The Eye Of Chaos, closing the album in a stylish manner with all band members generating a vile yet progressive wall of sounds tailored for admirers of Blackened Death Metal.

Album Review – The Bleeding / Monokrator (2023)

A ruthless UK Death and Thrash Metal squad attacks with their third full-length album, a blitzkrieg-like listening experience with a full frontal assault that pulls no punches and will leave your head spinning in delight.

After forming in the city of London, England in 2010, the infernal Death/Thrash Metal squad The Bleeding has been on a demolishing roll with the release of an array of EP’s and albums offering their fans top-of-the-line extreme music made in the UK. Now in 2023 the band formed of Jamie Stungo on vocals, Tasos Tzimorotas on the guitars, Jordan Muscatello on bass, and James Loh on drums attacks again with the pulverizing Monokrator, the third full-length opus in their career. Produced by Ronnie Björnström and Tasos Tzimorotas, mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström at Björnström Sound & Production, and displaying an old school artwork by Juanjo Castellano, Monokrator combines thrash elements comparable to latter day Exodus, Kreator and Destruction with the ferocity of Demolition Hammer, and a vocal attack akin to Jeff Walker and Chuck Schuldiner, to create a blitzkrieg-like listening experience with a full frontal assault that pulls no punches and will leave your head spinning in delight.

Pedal to the metal as it’s time to slam your dammed body into the pit to the sound of Chemical Lobotomy, a fantastic display of Death Metal spearheaded by the venomous blast beats by James while Jamie vociferates rabidly nonstop, followed by Chainsaw Deathcult, absolutely incendiary from the very first second, where the riffs by Tasos will penetrate deep inside your skin while Jordan makes the earth tremble with his sick bass lines. Put differently, if the album had ended here it would have already been a phenomenal release by The Bleeding. After such demented display of extreme music we have Mutation Chamber, slightly slower but still brutal and vile, showcasing another superb job done by Tasos with his demonic riffage, whereas Union of Horror is just as bestial as its predecessors, a beyond electrifying Death Metal onrush once again presenting an insane James on drums supported by the metallic bass punches by Jordan.

Get ready to be smashed like an insect by The Bleeding in Screams of Torment, bringing forward all their dexterity and fury, being therefore tailored for lovers of classic Death Metal; and Tasos will cut your ears with his strident axe in On Wings of Tribulation, another bestial display of Death Metal sounding very technical while Jamie screams mercilessly. The title-track Monokrator is a lecture in Death and Thrash Metal, with Jamie’s devilish roars walking hand in hand with the thunderous instrumental parts crafted by his bandmates, resulting in the perfect soundtrack for some frantic action inside the circle pit. And lastly, the band invites us all to kill inside the pit in Throes of Repulsion, sounding and feeling absolutely fast, furious and insane from start to finish, with the caustic riffs by Tasos and the unstoppable beats by James leaving you totally disoriented after all is said and done.
