Concert Review – Ne Obliviscaris (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 11/21/2025)

Thousands of lucky fans in Toronto experienced a mesmerizing display of Progressive Death Metal this Friday night, courtesy of three of the must-see names of the current extreme music scene worldwide.

OPENING ACTS: Psycroptic and Rivers of Nihil

What a phenomenal night of pure heavy music this Friday in Toronto at The Phoenix Concert Theatre thanks to Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment, who brought to the city three of the must-see names of the Extreme Metal scene worldwide. I’m talking about PSYCROPTIC, RIVERS OF NIHIL, and NE OBLIVISCARIS with their North American Headline Tour 2025, hypnotizing everyone who attended the concert from start to finish. Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were obviously there to witness an overdose of heaviness, intricacy, energy and creativity blasted by all three bands, offering us almost six hours of top-of-the-line music that made every penny invested in the tickets worth it. That’s exactly what you should expect from true hardworking and talented bands, who put the music and the happiness of their fans above any type of business or economic requirements. In other words, kudos to all bands, to Inertia Entertainment, and to everyone who was at the show to support heavy music in a city where music concerts are becoming pure cash grabbing opportunities for scalpers.

The first band to hit the stage, precisely at 6:45pm (which is way too early taking into account the nightmare that getting in and out of Toronto has become in recent years) were the ruthless Tasmanian Technical Death Metal devils PSYCROPTIC, who have been bringing extreme violence to our avid ears since the already distant year of 1999. Spearheaded by the Haley Brothers, those being drummer David Haley, of Australian Death Metal beasts Werewolves, as well as other insane bands like Faustian and Abramelin, and his demented brother Joe Haley on the guitar, the band showed zero mercy for our putrid bodies with a no shenanigans, in-your-face metal attack, blending songs from their entire discography, including their latest opus Divine Council, release in 2022, and their infernal 2025 single Architects of Extinction (all available on BandCamp and on Spotify). After their show I had the pleasure of chatting with the talented and super cool David Haley, telling him how much I love his style and that we need a Werewolves concert in Toronto. Who knows, maybe he’ll send the message to Sam Bean and Matt Wilcock, right? And if Pstycroptic visit your city any day, you know what to do.

The second band to set foot on the stage at the Phoenix was Reading, Pennsylvania’s own Progressive/Technical Death Metal machine RIVERS OF NIHIL, performing their excellent 2025 self-titled album (available on BandCamp and on Spotify) in full for the delight of everyone at the venue. If their headlining concert was already phenomenal back in June at Lee’s Palace, this time the band formed of Adam Biggs on vocals and bass, Brody Uttley and Andy Thomas on the guitars, Jared Klein on drums, and the unparalleled Patrick Corona on the saxophone offered a very unique experience to their fans, kicking ass from start to finish with their refined technique, undisputed brutality, and of course, the mesmerizing sound of the sax. Songs like the opener The Sub‐Orbital Blues, Water & Time, House of Light, and in special the headbanging American Death ignited some killer mosh pits in a considerably crowded venue, and when you’re able to slam into the pit to the sound of a saxophone, you know it’s going to be an absolute blast. Those guys are becoming fan-favorites in Toronto, and I guess it won’t take long for the Rivers of Nihil to cross our city again in the near future.

NE OBLIVISCARIS

After a quick break it was time for an overdose of awesomeness by Australia’s most innovative metal band to date, Melbourne, Victoria’s one and only Extreme Progressive Metal horde NE OBLIVISCARIS, simply pulverizing our senses with their inspiring, visceral and mesmerizing performance, playing in full their 2014 album Citadel, and their 2023 masterpiece Exul, both available on Spotify, by the way, offering us all over two hours of the best extreme music imaginable. It was a collective catharsis for every single person at the venue, with the crying violin and the melodic clean vocals by Tim Charles making a stunning paradox with the harsh roars by James Dorton, while the rest of the band fired a full-bodied, complex and utterly captivating blend of Progressive Death Metal with an array of different music genres. And what can I say about bassist Martino Garattoni? The guy is a beast armed with his metallic bass, adding endless groove to the band’s already deep sonority.

Let’s say Tim stole the spotlight during the first part of the show when they played Citadel, making it impossible to take our eyes from his performance, specially when he played the violin AND sang at the same time, and I have no idea how he’s capable of doing such difficult things combined to perfection like that. It was brilliant to say the least, and he was also in an excellent mood joking with the fact that they were only one song in, the three-part Painters of the Tempest, but already at 23 minutes of show. Of course, all fans had a blast with the wild mosh pits generated during their most violent song Pyrrhic, but their most magical moments came with those multi-part songs, with Devour Me, Colossus sounding beautifully inhumane.

There was no significant break from Citadel to Exul, just some words from Tim to an already happy crowd, and when they started playing the astonishing Equus I thought the venue was going to collapse due to its power, strength and electricity. The following songs were just as superb, with the crowd even igniting an Amon Amarth-like rowing on the floor to the surprise of the band (and Tim even mentioned that although he couldn’t understand why we were doing that, he loved it and loved the fact we were all having a great time), before all converged into the darkly gorgeous Anhedonia, with Tim once again sounding like an angel on vocals and the violin. After that, when we thought the show was over, the band came back with a very special encore playing the glorious And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope, from their 2012 album Portal of I, and if you’re familiar with the band you know the crowd was treated to another ten minutes of first-class metal where, instead of a wall of death, Tim asked everyone to simply grab a partner and dance together with the band. It was one of the coolest moments of the year, and I must say I can’t wait to see those beasts from Down Under live again in a not-so-distant future. To be fair, everyone who enjoys good music must see Ne Obliviscaris live at least once in life. What they do onstage, no other band can. It’s amazing.

Concert Review – Decapitated (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 02/13/2025)

It doesn’t matter how much snow there is in Toronto, the metalheads in the city will always be there for a night of sheer violence with bands like Decapitated and Incantation.

OPENING ACTS: Exmortus, Darkest Hour and Incantation

After the massive snow storm that hit the city of Toronto and most of the province on Ontario from Wednesday night until Thursday morning, bringing an endless amount of snow to the streets and, therefore, turning any commute into a true nightmare, I thought all roads would be clear Thursday evening when Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I headed to The Phoenix Concert Theatre for a night of sheer brutality offered by EXMORTUS, DARKEST HOUR, INCANTATION and DECAPITATED during their Nihility Across North America Tour 2025, another killer event brought to the city by Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment. Unfortunately, my predictions about the roads being clear of snow were wrong (although I was right about traffic being light that evening due to people staying home instead of going to work that day), and Toronto was still a huge freakin’ mess when I got to the show, but in the end no one seemed to care about the gargantuan snow banks blocking every single sidewalk and some streets, as the crowd at the venue was really good for a night when the best thing to do was staying home.

Less than half an hour after the doors opened, Whittier, California’s own Technical Thrash/Death Metal beast EXMORTUS kicked off the festivities with a frantic, very technical and absolutely fun performance, igniting some of the coolest and wildest circle pits of the entire night. Spearheaded by the talented vocalist and guitarist Jadran “Conan” Gonzalez, the band played a short but powerful set including songs form their latest opus Necrophony, available by the way on Spotify, and the reaction form the fans already at the venue was superb. Those guys are simply amazing live, playing all songs to perfection, and I guess it won’t take long for Torontonians to see them again in the city, and hopefully next time they’ll be the headliners and play a full set for our total delight.

After a very short break, Washington, D.C.-based Melodic Death Metal/Metalcore act DARKEST HOUR hit the sage at the Phoenix Concert Theatre for a very energetic show, thanks in part to the breathtaking performances by guitarists Mike Schleibaum and Nico Santora, who didn’t stop shredding their axes, headbanging, running and jumping around the stage, not even for a single second. Currently promoting their 2024 album Perpetual | Terminal, available on both BandCamp and on Spotify, the quintet was eager to get more action from the crowd, which seemed a bit tired most probably due to an entire day of shoveling and braving snow banks across the city. That doesn’t mean we didn’t get some sick mosh pits during their show, and of course every single time frontman John Henry asked people to move inside the pit, he was promptly answered with some nice action by the crowd.

I guess fans were also saving some energy for the ruthless performance by Johnstown, Pennsylvania’s own Death Metal veterans INCANTATION, who after a considerable delay started playing their 1994 cult album Mortal Throne Of Nazarene in full, just like in all other stops from their current tour. And let me tell you, the live rendition of such a classic album of Death Metal with Doom Metal influences sounded utterly evil, heavy and demented onstage, with the bass by Chuck Sherwood making our heads tremble during their entire show. The iconic John McEntee sounded as infernal as usual on vocals, inspiring us all for some brutal headbanging and, therefore, reminding us all why Incantation have been a staple of the extreme music scene worldwide for so many decades. It was just my second time seeing those guys live, and hopefully not the last one, as I’m sure Incantation love Toronto as much as we love their music.

DECAPITATED

Last but not least, it was time to turn up the volume to 11 with the infuriated performance by the main band of the night, Poland’s unrelenting Technical Death/Groove Metal horde DECAPITATED, and when I say it was loud, it’s because it was LOUD. Performing their 2002 classic album Nihility in full, plus a few other songs as part of the encore, the band now fronted by vocalist Eemeli Bodde (who by the way contributed vocals for the track “Flooding Secrations”, performed by a fictional band called Impaled Rektum from the 2018 Finnish movie Heavy Trip), Decapitated crushed our damn minds, souls and bodies with endless heaviness and violence, inspiring all mosh pit lovers to have a very good time inside the hurricane formed in the middle of the floor section. My only complaint is that the show started late, after 10pm, and some fans had to leave before the end because they had to take public transportation home, or simply because they were absolutely tired. As I said, the snow storm drained a lot of our energy during the day, but of course there’s always some left when the band in question is as infernal and vibrant as Decapitated.

OPENING ACTS: Dead Heat, Candy and Havok

Here I am Filling in for my man Gus, Who couldn’t make it out tonight due to other obligations and I’m sorry to say that I am quite happy to do it. Gus… you missed an absolute banger of a show brother! Traffic is such a fucking bitch in this city, I was worried my brother Keith and I were going to be late for the opening of the doors of the Phoenix Concert Theatre in downtown Toronto, Ontario. It was a cool damp Tuesday evening and people were driving like the usual idiots they are and we had to make a couple of detours along the way. Luckily we made it in time and found a parking spot thankfully. We found some friends in line and proceeded into the venue to check in at the box office. Keith and I split up to get to our usual spots as he was the photographer this evening and I made my way to the front barrier beside our good friend Scott Herod whom I had the pleasure of rocking out beside in the same spot for the Black Dahlia Murder show this past remembrance day. Scott and I were both bewildered to the fact that Security was criminally understaffed with only two men working the barrier. Those boys had their work cut out for them tonight and their efforts were to be applauded. Injuries and all, these two security guards put in the work and did a fantastic job.

The show got started at 7 p.m. with Oxnard, California’s DEAD HEAT. Despite their enthusiasm and talent, their set fell a little flat for me through no fault of their own due to poor sound quality and slight technical issues. It is important to note that the venue at this time was about a quarter full so crowd participation was at a minimum. So it was a bit of a rough opening but they put in a noble effort and I appreciated that. Next up was the experimental hardcore band CANDY out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and they fell flat as well for the same reasons. We could barely hear the vocalist, the drums were not mic’d up very well and the bass overpowered the guitar. Also Candy’s style of ending their songs abruptly was a bit confusing for us in the crowd as we couldn’t gauge if the song ended or was about to launch into a fat breakdown, so the band missed out on our feedback and response. Technical issues ruined their mojo a bit and it showed. Not so sweet for Candy sadly, no knock against them.

As my spirits were down, Denver Colorado thrash lords HAVOK turned my frown upside down and absolutely blew my fucking face off with a blistering set that had the crowd going totally bonkers. If Havok was the only band on this bill I would have left the show an insanely happy man. Oh my gawd! The energy in the building was incredible. Security had its hands full with endless waves of crowd surfers. The venue was almost full and by this point the pits were massive. We were having the time of our lives, loving every minute of it. Havok’s sound engineer was on point and the quality of it was on another planet compared to the opening bands. The gulf between them was enormous. David Sanchez’s vocals and riff shredding was absolutely killer as well as the solos of Reese Scruggs. Pete Webber destroyed it on the drums and the stand-out was the stand-in bass player Kaden Hunsacker (guitar tech/road manager) was incredible. If you had never seen them before you would never know that he was not their actual bassist. Havok alone was worth the price of admission. 11/10

EXODUS

Now with everybody in attendance positively buzzing with energy, we couldn’t contain ourselves when EXODUS hit the stage. The Bay Area thrash legends blessed us with a show for the ages. This was one of the most fun shows I have ever been to in my life and this arguably had to be the best show of the year. I have never seen so much crowd-surfing at a show ever. Non-stop action in the pit as well as countless waves of surfers. Seriously the crowd was insane. Toronto made me so proud that night and it was an honour to be among them. Gary Holt was on fire and Lee Altus was phenomenal on lead guitar. Jack Gibson held everything down with his stellar bass playing and Tom Hunting was pulverizing on the drums. Vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza was electric and remarked that whenever they visit Canada, the crowds are always insane. He also gave a shout out to the two brave security guards handling all of the surfers coming over the barrier. The crowd was rowdy and rambunctious but kept it fun too without any animosity towards each other.

Everyone in attendance was there for a good time and were all on the same page, to let loose and boy did we do that. I think that we gave Montreal a run for their money. Steve also pointed out that next year will be the 40th anniversary of their seminal record, 1985’s Bonded By Blood and that they will be coming back to Toronto for that tour. I’m definitely saving up for that show. Exodus are legends for a reason, they totally kick fucking ass live and they sounded fucking incredible! At the end of the show, I turned around to observe everyone’s faces and they contained the look of pure satisfaction as I’m sure mine did as well. Personally I can’t wait until next year and I will be counting the days. What a killer show with killer bands. 11/10

Concert Review – The Black Dahlia Murder & Dying Fetus (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 11/06/2024)

OPENING ACTS: Vomit Forth, Angelmaker and Spite

On Wednesday November the 6th legions of local headbangers amassed in front of The Phoenix Concert Theatre located at 410 Sherbourne St. Toronto, Ontario for an exhilarating evening of sonic punishment and brutality brought to us by our good friend Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment with one of the best line ups I have seen this year consisting of headliners THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER (Michigan) and DYING FETUS (Maryland), supported by the bands SPITE (Bay Area, California), ANGELMAKER (North Vancouver, B.C.) and VOMIT FORTH (Connecticut), during their Beg to Serve 2024 Tour stop in the city.

VOMIT FORTH opened the show with some hardcore brutal death metal rife with brutal breakdowns whipping us metalheads into a frenzy, inciting a whirlwind of feet and fists inside some pretty gnarly circle pits, and from there on the crowd was on fire for the rest of the show. 8/10

ANGELMAKER was up next and they absolutely fucking killed it with an amazing set that impressed me tremendously. It was my first time seeing them live and I think they might be one of my favourite bands now. These guys should be headlining shows for sure. The crowd was mad with bloodlust during their set and everything ratcheted up a few notches with some of the craziest crowd surfing I have ever seen. Bodies were flying all over the place literally! And it was fun as fuck to see too. AngelMaker’s vocalists were so mind-blowing and the band sounded so friggin’ good. Seriously it was an epic set.10/10

SPITE had some mighty big shoes to fill and did not disappoint. They put on an amazingly brutal show and held their own among the giants amongst them, keeping the energy going, stoking the flames of the behemoth engine that we call a crowd. The crowd was absolutely nuts that night! Non-stop action on our side of the barrier. 9/10

DYING FETUS

Marylands’ brutal tech death juggernauts DYING FETUS were up next and slew us with a blistering set full of old school death metal chugging and brutal slams. Fetus’ sound quality was top notch and holy shit what a band! Trey Williams drumming was killer and Sean Beasley was beastly on the bass guitar. John Gallagher was on fire with the riffage and solos on guitar. Vocally, both John and Sean were on point. Dying Fetus are one of the G.O.A.T.s of the genre, an absolutely tremendous trio of a band. Sometimes old is gold. 10/10

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER finished off the show providing the killing stroke on the slaughter-room floor so to speak. The crowd got even crazier and one brave soul even dove head first with reckless abandon off the stage, trusting that the rest of the crowd would catch him and thankfully they did. Even before Dahlia got on the stage fans were crowd surfing in anticipation. To call it crowd surfing is a bit of a misnomer, it was more akin to midget-tossing (pardon the expression). The Black Dahlia Murder did not disappoint and put on a fantastic set full of old and new material which satisfied the crowd. Brian Eschbach brought some much needed levity to the evening with some of his crowd banter referring to Doug Ford taking him on a cocaine fueled bar-hop and seance to talk to his brother Rob. It was a nice surprise to see when I got home that The Black Dahlia Murder live streamed their set on YouTube, so I watched it again. It’s now a couple days later as I’m writing this and Nocturnal is still playing in my head. This was seriously one of the best shows of the year for me personally and I along with the crowd had an amazing time. Great show. 10/10

Concert Review – Archspire (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 06/08/2024)

A night of horror, brutality, circle pits, walls of death, fun games like Twister and the “shoey”, and a lot more in Toronto, courtesy of the fastest and most technical brigade in the history of Canada.

OPENING ACTS: Alluvial, Carcosa and Aborted

It was a beyond wild and fun night at The Phoenix Concert Theatre this Saturday when ALLUVIAL, CARCOSA, ABORTED and ARCHSPIRE took the city of Toronto by storm with their fulminating Everything’s F#*!@d Tour 2024, another extremely successful event brought to the city by the one and only Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment, and I say wild and fun because that’s exactly what the four bands offered to us all, blasting our heads with their sick, infernal music, while at the same time demanding nonstop action inside the circle pit. Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were patiently awaiting for this concert as we love the music of all four bands, and I must say I couldn’t be happier with everything we got during the event’s four hours of brutal, thrilling and captivating heavy music. Not even the (brutally) bad traffic to get to Toronto made me less excited about the show, and if you know how horrible traffic has been to get to and back from the city lately, especially when there’s rain involved, you know the show was fantastic to the point you don’t even remember the problems to get there, right?

The first band to hit the stage precisely at 7:30pm was Atlanta, Georgia’s Deathcore/Djent outfit ALLUVIAL, who have recently released a great new EP titled Death Is but a Door, the follow-up to their 2021 album Sarcoma. Let’s say their setlist was a mix of those two albums, and although I have no idea of the names of all songs I’m pretty sure they played Bog Dweller and Fogbelt, two songs perfect to ignite some intense mosh pits with whoever was already at the floor section (instead of stuck in a huge line at the way too hot merch area). Their frontman Kevin Muller was a beast during their whole set, and after that fans had a chance to meet him and the other guys at their merch table, which was a very nice touch by the band to create a stronger connection with their fanbase. If you want to know more about Alluvial, go check their BandCamp and Spotify for all of their music, and don’t miss the chance to see them live as they’re insane onstage.

As I wanted so bad an Archspire “Stay Tech” pin plus a patch, I was stupid enough to face the sauna-like merch line right after Alluvial and had to miss the beginning of the concert by Vancouver, British Columbia-based Deathcore/Djent act CARCOSA, but that was OK as I still had plenty to enjoy from their infernal setlist as all bands had a lot of playing time, including the openers. Still promoting their 2021 album Anthology, the band formed of Johnny Ciardullo, Andrew Baena, Cooper Lagace, Laptop and Travis Regnier crushed the souls of everyone at the already packed venue with their heavy-as-hell music and intense energy onstage, and you know how good a band is when a renowned musician like Aborted’s Sven De Caluwé sports a Carcosa shirt during their set. Hence, don’t forget to buy and stream Carcosa’s music on BandCamp and on Spotify, because those Canadian dudes are freakin’ awesome.

After another short and sweet break, Belgium’s own Death Metal/Grindcore masters ABORTED opened up their Vault of Horrors and kicked off one of the most pulverizing, demented and frantic concerts of the past few years in Toronto. It was absolute chaos and madness thanks to guitarist Ian Jekelis, bassist Stefano Franceschini, drummer Ken Bedene, and of course, one of the most demented frontmen of all time, the unparalleled beast Sven De Caluwé. That man was on fire throughout their entire set, hitting his head with his hands, jumping up and down nonstop, making crazy faces, pretending to be firing a machine gun when Ken was blasting his drums manically, and so on, which translated into an overdose of violence, gore and mosh pits to the delight of all fans of the band in the city.

The opener Retrogore was beyond pulverizing to say the least, followed by an avalanche of old school Aborted and new songs from their bestial 2024 album Vault of Horrors (available on BandCamp and on Spotify, by the way), including the fantastic Dreadbringer, Brotherhood of Sleep, and Death Cult. By the way, I told my friend who’s not very familiar with Aborted that someone was going to die during Death Cult so heavy and insane it is, and that almost happened as one guy stayed on the ground for a while to the point several fans inside the pit asked the band to stop playing to check if he was OK. The guy was apparently fine, but I have no idea if he had any sort of concussion that would manifest during the next few days. As I said, Death Cult almost resulted in a real death inside the pit. There was still time for more brutal action with the demolishing tunes Insect Politics, Threading on Vermillion Deception and The Saw and the Carnage Done, leaving everyone in awe and more than ready for more Aborted and their world renowned walls of death in Toronto in the near future.

ARCHSPIRE

After seeing Vancouver, British Columbia’s own Extreme Technical Death Metal brigade ARCHSPIRE kicking some serious ass live in Sydney, Australia last year, I was beyond eager to witness what they could do in Toronto, and this Saturday night they proved why they’re one of the must-see names of the extreme music scene worldwide with their ruthless aggression, undisputed technique, and a really nice sense of humor. Just to give you an example of all that together, when a concert starts with a narration saying things like “after the invention of the horse” you know it’s going to be brutal and fun. Just the idea of someone “inventing” the horse is already a good joke to kick things off.

And as soon as the unstoppable Oliver Rae Aleron on vocals, Dean Lamb and Tobi Morelli on the guitars, Jared Smith on bass and Spencer Prewett on drums began their beyond fast, pulverizing and insane concert, it was total madness inside the pit until the very last second. Their last record to date might still be the 2021 opus Bleed the Future, but honestly all songs from that album and from Relentless Mutation (which are the only two albums they currently play in their concerts, “ignoring” for some unknown reason the also great The Lucid Collective, from 2014, and All Shall Align, from 2011) sounded killer live, and you can enjoy both in full on BandCamp and on Spotify, by the way. They kicked off the show with the inhumane Bleed the Future to give all concert goers an idea of what their Extreme Technical Death Metal means, and continued their feast of technical insanity with already classic songs like Acrid Canon, Remote Tumour Seeker and Golden Mouth of Ruin, all played to perfection and at the speed of light (or maybe even faster than that).

An Archspire concert is not complete without some good jokes, and the band didn’t’ disappoint at all with a selection of nonsense that added a very nice touch to their already flawless concert. We got the Twister game inside the pit which ended with an infernal wall of death, a sweet tradition already in their concerts, and the also sick “shoey”, which is something Oliver said they learned in Australia. If you don’t know what that is, it’s simply drinking beer from your own shoe as fast as you can, with the winner getting a custom shirt made by the band. The Toronto one had something written about the Maple Leafs that I honestly didn’t get, but it was really cool and the guy who won it put it on right away, as he was really excited of being onstage with the band. And what to say about their introduction to all bands from this tour, saying Aborted only accepted their invitation to play with them (because they needed a big band to seel tickets, as they couldn’t do it by themselves) after they sucked their dicks? This one might sound childish for some people, but it was a good one as well.

Perhaps the most absurd and hilarious moment of the show was when Oliver explained why they had two Christmas trees onstage. Yes, that was their stage stuff, really weird, right? It all made sense when Oliver said that they got some “lab results” and their guitarist Tobi was “not gonna make it to next Christmas”, so they decided to celebrate Christmas with him during this tour. Yes, Christmas IN THE MIDDLE OF JUNE, and they even brough to stage what they called “Summer Santa” to throw picks to the crowd and give Tobi a dildo to complete his guitar, because according to Oliver that was the same guitar he got from his mom when he was a kid living with his poor Italian family, all in the same room. That was mental, but what was even more mental was the ending of the show with the infuriated, fast-as-a-shark song Involuntary Doppelgänger, and my favorite of all, Drone Corpse Aviator. I have no idea how Oliver can sing so fast like that, nor how Spencer can sound like a stone crusher without making too much effort behind his drums, nor how the other guys manage to play their guitars and bass at an insane speed without making any errors, but I know for sure that Archspire are by far one of the coolest bands of the entire Canadian scene, and I can’t wait to see them live again in the near future. And until then, we must all… STAY TECH!

Concert Review – Insomnium (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 04/14/2024)

The third night in a row of first-class heavy music in Toronto was a feast of melody and darkness, courtesy of one of the pillars of Nordic Melodic Death Metal.

OPENING ACTS: Wilderun and Omnium Gatherum

Last but not least, Sunday night was the final round of one of the most metallic weekends in the past few years in Toronto, once again at The Phoenix Concert Theatre, and this time with WILDERUN, OMNIUM GATHERUM and INSOMNIUM during their North American Tour 2024. For the third night in a row, Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were there to cover another awesome event organized by Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment, and with much better traffic conditions than Friday and Saturday, basically everyone was able to get to the venue way ahead to enjoy some chat with friends. have a few drinks, buy some merch, and obviously have a good time already with the opening act of the night, even with the doors opening earlier than the previous two days.

And the opening act this time was Boston, Massachusetts-based Symphonic Progressive/Folk Metal band WILDERUN, a band that I highly recommend for fans of Opeth. To be honest, I actually prefer Wilderun’s music to Opeth’s, as I’m not sure why exactly but they do sound heavier to me. Still promoting their 2022 album Epigone, the band formed of Evan Anderson Berry, Wayne Ingram, Daniel Müller and Jonathan Teachey put on a solid performance to the point there were even mosh pits when it’s not normal to see that type of reaction when the music played is a lot more progressive and smoother like theirs. The band even acknowledged that, saying it was the first mosh pit of the tour for them, proving how much Toronto enjoyed their show. Hence, if you want to enjoy their detailed, intricate creations, you can stream all of their albums on Spotify, and I honestly can’t wait to see Wilderun live again in the near future.

The second band of the night needs no introduction. Hailing from the always beautiful Finland, Melodic Death Metal squad OMNIUM GATHERUM turned up the heat considerably Sunday night with their undisputed fusion of melody and violence, with their setlist encompassing songs from their whole career (all available on Spotify), including their 2021 album Origin, and their 2023 EP Slasher, with the opener Slasher already igniting some action on the floor section. The entire band sounded amazing during their set, but of course their forntman Jukka Pelkonen stole the show with his deep roars and his amazing interaction with the crowd, which obviously led to a warm and vibrant reaction from the fans. Also, their guitarists Markus Vanhala and Nick Cordle kicked some serious ass on stage, making each song even heavier and more striking, and please keep those names in mind as there was more of the duo right after Omnium Gatherum finalized their show.

INSOMNIUM

It was just a little past 9pm when Finland’s own Melodic Death Metal masters INSOMNIUM hit the stage at The Phoenix Concert Theatre for another powerful performance, just as great as when they played in the city alongside Enslaved last year, with their setlist being very similar to that, obviously focusing on their 2023 album Anno 1696. The opener 1696, followed by Ephemeral and White Christ (and we do need an Insomnium/Rotting Christ co-headlining tour just so Mr. Sakis Tolis finally joins the stage with Insomnium to sing this beautiful song), were extremely intense, enfolding and dark, and the reaction of their avid fans was fantastic as well. Also, I must say that although Lilian and The Rapids are new songs, they already sound like classics live so good they are.

Now remember when I asked you to keep the names of Nick Cordle and Markus Vanhala in mind? Well, those two guy are on double duty this entire tour, being the guitarists for both Omnium Gatherum AND Insomnium. Markus has already been playing with Insomnium for quite some time, so nothing new about that, but Nick had to take the guitars duties last minute due to a very weird reason. Guitarist Jani Liimatainen simply “disappeared” from the map a few weeks ago (well, rumor has it that he’s spending some time with a girl in Brazil, and I feel like a reporter from TMZ by writing this here) and was therefore kicked out of the band, plus the fact I have no idea why Ville Friman is not touring with Insomnium this year, so it was up to Nick and Markus to be responsible for all riffs and solos during this entire tour. They’re doing a fantastic job, by the way.

After lots and lots of horns in the air, mosh pits, and a killer encore with The Primeval Dark, While We Sleep (and I might sound repetitive, but this song always sounds superb to my ears when I see the band live or when I listen to its studio version) and Heart Like a Grave, it was time for Insomnium to say goodbye to Toronto, but of course promising they’ll be back soon for another captivating show. Concert Review – Korpiklaani (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 04/13/2024)

A night full of melody, pirates, sauna, beer, vodka, dancing and circle pits to warm up the hearts of all fans of good heavy music in Toronto.

OPENING ACTS: Illumishade and Visions Of Atlantis

Round 2 of a very metal weekend in Toronto started with “round 2 of very bad traffic”, taking me over an hour to reach once again The Phoenix Concert Theatre when it should have taken me only about 35 or 40 minutes in total this Saturday night. Well, at least this time I was able to see all bands, those being ILLUMISHADE, VISIONS OF ATLANTIS and KORPIKLAANI, during their party-like Rankarumpu North American Tour 2024, one more unforgettable event organized by the unstoppable Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment. My friend Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were a bit tired from the previosu night of brutality by Thy Art Is Murder, but as soon as the first band hit the stage the adrenaline started to flow and our batteries charged up quickly.

That first band was Switzerland’s Symphonic/Progressive Metal/Rock outfit ILLUMISHADE, and let’s say they won the hearts of every single person at the venue instantly with their talent, charisma, and passion for what they do. Of course all band members were great, but it was their frontwoman Fabienne Erni who stole the show with a hypnotizing performance, with her soaring vocals and beautiful moves captivating the eyes and ears of everyone at the venue. The band has recently released the album Another Side of You, available on BandCamp and on Spotify, with their setlist being almost entirely based on that album, and with songs like Here We Are and Cloudreader sounding awesome live. I really hope they return to the city sooner than later for another great show, because they’re an amazing new band from the Swiss scene and they’re definitely going places based on the quality of their music.

After a quick break, the venue was taken by storm by the most beloved pirates to ever arise from Austria. Yes, you read that correctly, as I’m talking about Melodic/Symphonic Power Metal privateers VISIONS OF ATLANTIS, who put on a fantastic show for our total delight. Spearheaded by one of the most charismatic, talented and charming duos of the entire Power Metal scene, the stunning Clémentine Delauney (what a voice, my friends… what a voice!) and the electrifying Michele Guaitoli, the band brought a storm of heavy music to all fans at the venue, blending songs form their most recent album Pirates, like Master the Hurricane and the extremely catchy Clocks, with new tunes like the cheesy but awesomely fun Armada, from their upcoming album Pirates II – Armada, to be released on July 5. Their show was so full of energy to the point there were several mosh pits going on during some of their faster songs, all of course led by Michele who had all fans on the palm of his pirate hand the whole time. KORPIKLAANI

If you have never seen the incendiary Finnish Folk Metal crew KORPIKLAANI live in your life, you have no idea what you’re missing. Let’s say that from the very first notes of the song Kotomaa, from their brand new opus Rankarumpu (to be reviewed here at The Headbanging Moose soon), it was a wild party with lots of dancing, beer, vodka, the heat of a real sauna, and so on, driving all fans crazy inside the venue. The last time I saw the band live was way back in 2014 during Paganfest America Part V (yes, that festival existed one day in Toronto), but I must say this Saturday the band was a lot tighter, more professional, more vibrant and heavier than ever, with of course frontman Jonne Järvelä stealing the spotlight with his inebriate vocals and classy dance moves.

Their setlist was a thing of beauty, blending old school songs like Wooden Pints and Happy Little Boozer with several new ones including Aita, the title-track Rankarumpu, and the breathtaking Saunaan, proving the band is in great shape and form in their new album. Also, it’s always fun to witness Sami Perttula on the accordion and Olli Vänskä on violin live, as their instruments bring an amazing vibe to all of the band’s songs, and of course that translates into endless dancing and jumping inside the circle pit (which was VERY intense, by the way). Well, let’s say things got even faster and rowdier inside the pit during the encore when they played the classics Beer Beer and Vodka, proving booze will always be the best fuel for any heavy music party, leaving all fans eager for more Korpiklaani the second their wild show was over. Concert Review – Thy Art Is Murder (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 04/12/2024)

If you love mosh pits from the bottom of your blackened heart, then Friday night in Toronto was the place to be, courtesy of four insane bands in a feast of pure, brutal Deathcore.

OPENING ACTS: Snuffed on Sight, Signs of the Swarm and Angelmaker

I have no idea what’s happening with the traffic to get to Toronto. I mean, it has always been bad, but this weekend it seems that things got even worse, which delayed my arrival at The Phoenix Concert Theatre to see SNUFFED ON SIGHT, SIGNS OF THE SWARM, ANGELMAKER and THY ART IS MURDER kill everything and everyone during the Toronto stop of their Godlike North America Tour 2024, another fantastic event brought to the city by Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment, and “day 1” of my more-than-awesome “metal weekend” with three days of shows in a row. Besides the heavy traffic to get in and out of the city, there was also a lot of wind and rain, but nothing that could stop a horde of avid Deathcore and Death Metal fans to invade the venue and generate some of the wildest mosh pits I’ve ever seen live. Holy shit, the kids were mental inside the pit, with the action flowing nonstop until the very last second.

Due to traffic, I couldn’t make it in time to see San Francisco, California-based Brutal Death Metal/Hardcore act SNUFFED ON SIGHT, but fortunately my buddy Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi was there to take some wild pictures of the band, and to confirm what I suspected after listening to their 2023 album Smoke, that they’re extremely heavy and really fun to see live. Although I had to miss Snuffed on Sight, I was lucky enough to witness live one of the heaviest, most insane concerts ever, courtesy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s own Deathcore beast SIGNS OF THE SWARM. Led by the amazing frontman David Simonich, the band delivered sheer violence, groove and fire during their short but extremely destructive set, playing songs form their most recent album Amongst the Low & Empty such as the title-track Amongst the Low & Empty, Tower of Torsos and Pray for Death. The circle pits, walls of death and crowd surfing were freakin’ insane during their whole concert, showing how electrifying their music is (and you can check it out yourself on Spotify or by clicking HERE). I can’t wait to see those guys again live, but I’ll be sure I have some sort of body armor to endure their sick mosh pits, no doubt about that.

Next on the bill was North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based Deathcore infantry ANGELMAKER, and yet again The Phoenix Concert Theatre became a hurricane of mosh pits thanks to their incendiary performance on stage. It’s interesting that they were able to fit all seven members of the band on stage, because not only they have three guitarists, but they also have two demented vocalists, Casey Tyson-Pearce and Mike Greenwood, and oh boy, their double vocal attack is beyond infernal. Playing songs the likes of Godless, Hollow Heart and Leech, it was a wild ride together with those Canadians, keeping the action in the mosh pit moving as fast as a shark hunting for food. Go check their crazy creations on BandCamp and on Spotify, and don’t miss the chance to see those seven wicked musicians live whenever they hit your city, as it’s absolutely worth it.

THY ART IS MURDER

After three insane openers, it was then time for the main attraction of the night, Blacktown, New South Wales, Australia’s own Deathcore institution THY ART IS MURDER, to crush the souls of all concert goers with their visceral, harsh and furious performance. Promoting their 2023 album Godlike, the band now fronted by the talented Tyler Miller, of Australian Technical Deathcore band Aversions Crown (as the iconic Chris “CJ” McMahon has recently quit music for good, starting a career in real estate) kicked some ass during their solid performance (just as good as the last time I saw them opening for Cannibal Corpse back in 2019), with songs like Slaves Beyond Death, Death Squad Anthem, Make America Hate Again, Godlike, and of course Puppet Master, driving all fans crazy inside the wild mosh pits that kept moving frantically in the middle of the floor section. Leaving concerts earlier than the end seems to be the new norm in Toronto, maybe due to public transportation hours, maybe due to the increase in violence at night, but I would say more than 90% of the crowd stayed at the venue until the very last second, and hopefully it won’t take long for the band to return to the city for another demented concert like Friday night.

Concert Review – Gloryhammer (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 03/12/2024)

One of the torchbearers of Symphonic Power Metal worldwide returned to Toronto after five long years with more of their striking music, swords, goblins, hammers, and HOOTS!

OPENING ACTS: AMMO and Twilight Force

It was a beyond pleasant night in Toronto yesterday with temperatures above the two digits, something VERY uncommon for this time of the year but perfect for enjoying some high-quality Power Metal at The Phoenix Concert Theatre (which by the way desperately needs better parking nearby), courtesy of AMMO, TWILIGHT FORCE and GLORYHAMMER during their most excellent The Red, White & Hoots North American Tour 2024, and the Torontonian fans of all three bands answered their call and joined them in the battlefield for a night of soaring vocals, shredding, orcs, goblins, swords, hammers, princess and princesses, and of course my buddy Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I couldn’t be left out of that metallic party in a land far, far away, right?

Well, to be fair, due to other commitments I couldn’t get to the venue in time to see Toronto’s own Heavy Metal act AMMO, but some people told me they were really good and put on a very entertaining warmup for Twilight Force and Gloryhammer. I checked online and it looks like there have been some significant changes to their lineup since their 2019 EP Taking the Throne, available on BandCamp and on Spotify, which means we can expect new music from those guys in a not-so-distant future. Sorry, AMMO, for not catching you live last night opening for Twilight Force and Gloryhammer, but I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities to see you guys kicking ass on stage in the coming months.

It was around 8pm when Sweden’s iconic Symphonic Power Metal unity TWILIGHT FORCE hit the stage for a fantastic performance, I would say just as electrifying as Gloryhammer, with all band members being on absolute fire throughout the entire show and in sync with the crowd, leading each person at the venue into magical battles with dragons (and there was actually a “floating” dragon released over the crowd during Dragonborn) and other mystical creatures. Having released the album At the Heart of Wintervale last year, Twilight Force was unfortunately missing their lead singer Allyon due to unforeseen issues with his family back home, but that doesn’t mean their show was boring; quite the contrary, Long Island, New York-born (but currently residing in Sweden) vocalist Kristin Starkey, of Italian Melodic Heavy/Power Metal act Temperance, and who’s been doing backing vocals for Twilight Force since 2023, did all the vocals last night and, oh boy, she was incredible. What an amazing voice she has, plus of course her charisma and onstage theatricals, making us even “forget” she’s not the actual vocalist for the band. Sword yielding songs like Dragonborn, Thundersword, and the closing one The Power of the Ancient Force, inspired all fans to raise their fists in the air and enjoy an ass-kicking performance by Twilight Force, and I’m sure soon we’ll see those guys headlining concerts in the city thanks to the more-than-warm reception from their Torontonian fans (and if you want to know more about their music, go check them on BandCamp and on Spotify).

GLORYHAMMER

Finally, five years after their last concert in Toronto, Scotland’s own Symphonic Power Metal brigade GLORYHAMMER returned to Canadian battlefields armed with their 2023 opus Return To The Kingdom Of Fife, and if there’s one word that could define their show, that word has to be HOOTS! It was a fusion of Heavy and Power Metal with symphonic elements, beer, goblins, hammers and other fantasy elements by Angus McFife II, Ser Proletius, The Hootsman, Zargothrax and Ralathor, putting a huge smile on the faces of everyone who attended the show last night. Blending songs from all of their albums with new ones like Wasteland Warrior Hoots Patrol and Fife Eternal, which are extremely catchy and perfect for live concerts, the band kicked some ass and slayed some goblins for our total delight.

Of course, some of the most anticipated songs of their setlist didn’t disappoint at all, including the amazing battle hymns Gloryhammer, Hootsforce and The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee, with Angus McFife II (aka Sozos Michael) proving why he was chosen to become the band’s frontman with not only an amazing vocal performance, but also being very charismatic and leading the crowd with his requests for fists in the air while holding the Gloryhammer high. Also, I was impressed with the fact that there were even mosh pits during Gloryhammer’s performance, because that’s not the type of music you expect mosh pits. Well, it’s Toronto, so mosh pits can happen anytime. Furthermore, when you have a concert where a goblin appears on stage playing the saxophone, that means ANYTHING can happen, and I bet everyone at the venue can’t wait for Gloryhammer to visit Toronto again in the near future with more swords, hammers, and HOOTS!

Concert Review – Jinjer (The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto, ON, 09/15/2023)

The ambassadors of Ukrainian Progressive and Groove Metal took the city of Toronto by storm on an electrifying and sold out night of first-class music.

OPENING ACT: Monuments

Despite the insane traffic to get in and out of Toronto due to countless accidents, the endless construction in the city and so on, I was able to make it just in time (and by that I mean just a minute or so before Monuments kicked off the night) for the feast of Metalcore, Djent, Progressive and Groove Metal by MONUMENTS and JINJER at The Phoenix Concert Theatre during their North American Tour 2023 this Friday in Toronto. The concert had been sold out for weeks already, warning all concert goers that it was going to be a hot and packed night for fans of both bands; however, I think everyone at the venue was not just ready for that, but highly prepared for the heat and eager for some action inside the circle pit, and as it was a Friday night let’s say that any worries about working or going to school the next day were left outside the venue, generating a fun and intense energy inside The Phoenix Concert Theatre.

It was close to 7:30pm when London, UK-based Progressive Metal/Djent act MONUMENTS hit the stage for a breathtaking performance, receiving a truly wild reaction form the crowd with tons of horns and fists in the air, with everyone jumping up and down together with the band, and above all that, with an incendiary circle pit taking a good chunk of the floor section for the delight of all Torontonians who love a mosh pit more than they love their own families. Still promoting their 2022 album In Stasis, the band formed of the extremely talented Andy Cizek on vocals, John Browne on the guitars, Werner Erkelens on bass, and Mike Malyan on drums was on absolute fire from start to finish, setting the bar really high for Jinjer. All songs played by the quartet, including their newest ones Cardinal Red, False Providence, Opiate and Lavos, sounded fantastic live, and I’m sure after Friday their fanbase will only grow bigger and stronger in Toronto. JINJER

Although Ukraine’s own Metalcore/Djent/Progressive/Groove Metal institution JINJER was supposed to have started their flawless performance at 9:10pm, they ended up hitting the stage 10 minutes earlier than that, most probably because the team setting up the stage for them worked faster than expected. That means the break between bands to check the merch stand, to grab a beer, go to the washroom or chat with your friends was slightly shorter than we thought, but that wasn’t an issue at all because everyone at the venue was more than eager to see the stunning Tatiana “Tati Booyakah” Shmaylyuk and her henchmen kicking some ass on stage in an incendiary display of heaviness, groove and passion for heavy music. Furthermore, it is a true pleasure seeing a band like Jinjer becoming such a big name in the scene, as last time I saw them back in 2018 opening for Cradle of Filth they were “just” an opening band.

Jinjer haven’t released anything new yet after their 2021 album Wallflowers, but it was crystal clear that their fans were there on Friday for some fun it didn’t matter what the setlist was going to be. Well, let’s say we had the utmost pleasure of enjoying live pretty much all of their already classic songs including Perennial, Ape, Teacher, Teacher!, Who Is Gonna Be the One (my favorite of the entire concert), Call Me a Symbol, and Judgement (& Punishment), among many others. Needless to say, Tatiana stole the show with her incredible clean vocals and demonic harsh growls, her hypnotizing dance moves, and her undeniable charisma, creating a powerful connection with all Jinjer fans at the venue. Of course, her performance wouldn’t have been so compelling without the support of her bandmates Roman Ibramhalilov on the guitars, Eugene Kostyuk on bass, and Vlad Ulasevich on drums, who are by the way sounding A LOT tighter, better, heavier and more precise than the last time I saw them live.

Fortunately, I had the support once again from my friend Keith Ibbitson of Lower Eastside Photography to take proper photos of the whole night, as it was nearly impossible to get close to the stage due to the rowdy crowd at The Phoenix Concert Theatre, plus of course the fact that the circle pit was massive and simply walking through it was not an option. As the band played their closing song, the infuriated Sit Stay Roll Over, that task got absolutely impossible, ending their blazing performance on a high note and leaving all attendees eager for another night of Jinjer awesomeness in the city in a not-so-distant future (not to mention the fact the show ended around 10:30pm, giving everyone plenty of time to catch any type of public transportation available back home, go for some drinks, or just stay near the venue for some quality chat with their friends). Moreover, I’m sure whenever Tatiana and the boys return to the city it will be a sold out concert once again, because when a band like Jinjer keeps putting their hearts and souls into the making of their music, that beautiful energy flows into the minds of their fans, strengthening their ties and helping guide the band to stardom, just like what happened this Friday in Toronto. Or as Tatiana herself would say… Booyah!
