Album Review – Cumbeast / Fairytales Of Filth (2025)

Finish your plate and buckle in, as Finland’s own Brutal Death Metal creature returns with their depraved seventh studio album, their first dive into twisted fairytale territory.

Finish your plate and buckle in, as Turku, Varsinais-Suomi, Finland’s own Brutal Death Metal creature Cumbeast is back with Fairytales Of Filth, their seventh full-length album and the follow-up to their 2019 opus Gore Zoo. Recorded and mixed by Tomi Uusitupa at Oxroad Studios, mastered By Miro Kiiski at Miro Mastering, and embracing new textures without losing sight of their signature groove-heavy and aggressive sound, now enriched by melodic twists, folk influences, and a handful of surprising collaborations the likes of Sami Perttula (Korpiklaani) and John Puig (Phrymerial), the new album by Snoop Rott on vocals and bass, and Rob ‘O Cock on the guitars and additional vocals, plus former drummer Mikko “Fleshpipe Mike” Konki (who left the band after recording the album last year, being replaced by Stinky Minky this year) is their first dive into twisted fairytale territory, pushing their trademark blend of brutal grooves, blast beats, fretless bass, and guttural absurdism into even stranger places.

Cummando sounds and feels heavy-as-hell from the very first second thanks to the scorching riffs by Rob and the venomous beats by Mikko, while Snoop inspires us to slam like true metal beasts; followed by Metham Of Gotham, a first-class Brutal Death Metal extravaganza led by the deep, evil roars by Snoop, perfect for some wild mosh pit action. Then featuring guests Sami Perttula (Korpiklaani) on accordion and John Puig (Phrymerial) on vocals and intro speech we have Captain Cock, where the music sounds as demented as the “story” of its main character; and guest Lukas Swiaczny (Stillbirth) delivers some sick vocal lines in Abacus Of Testicles, with the band’s pounding drums and vicious riffage turning it into a must-listen for fans of the style. Then it’s time for Henri Sorvali (Finntroll, Moonsorrow) to blast some wicked synths in Troll Named Scrot, adding even more insanity to their core heaviness.

Åbomination is another hammering tune by those depraved bastards, with the deep vociferations by Snoop sounding truly inhumane; whereas a lot of groove flows from Snoop’s bass and Mikko’s drums in Forest Fap Frenzy, sounding at the same time perfect for slamming into the pit or for simply enjoying a cold beer in the name of our beloved Brutal Death Metal. In Ghostfuckers I’m not sure if their intention was to add some sort of Rap-like vibe to its core, but it’s by far the weakest of all due to that; and last but definitely not least, Cumbeast still has enough energy to melt our putrid faces with the cryptic, cinematic Spermafrost, sounding like a bulldozer from hell with the guitar by Rob exhaling pure heaviness.

In summary, if you’re a fan of the absurdity and gore crafted by bands such as Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Stillbirth, Aborted, and Party Cannon, you’ll definitely have a very good time listening to the ruthless, visceral Fairytales Of Filth, taking you on a one-way journey into a rotten land where all fairytales end in pure filth. The guys from Cumbeast are waiting for you on Facebook, InstagramYouTube and Spotify with more of their depraved music, news, tour dates, and an endless dosage of sonic filth, and of course you can show them how demented you are by purchasing a copy of their new album from their own BandCamp. Because although some people might think they live in a fairytale, it’s albums like Fairytales Of Filth by Cumbeast that show those people that the reality is a lot harsher and more gruesome than any type of extreme music.

Album Review – Sepulchral Curse / Crimson Moon Evocations (2025)

This ruthless Finnish horde demonstrates their unmatched ferocity and craftmanship in their third studio album, cementing their place at the very zenith of the global Blackened Death Metal scene.

Arriving merely two years after their bold leap forward with Abhorrent Dimensions, Crimson Moon Evocations, the third full-length opus by Turku, Finland-based Death Metal creature Sepulchral Curse, paints a vivid portrait of a band at their creative and productive peak. Recorded and mixed by Tomi Uusitupa at Oxroad Studios, mastered by Are Kangus, and displaying a dark and sinister artwork by Mark Erskine, the new album by vocalist Kari Kankaanpää, guitarists Jaakko Riihimäki and Aleksi Luukka, bassist Niilas Nissilä, and drummer Johannes Rantala demonstrates their unmatched ferocity and craftmanship, cementing their place at the very zenith of the global Blackened Death Metal scene.

The guitars by Jaakko and Aleksi rev up the band’s deadly engine in Wildfires, quickly morphing into a bestial Death Metal extravaganza to the crushing drums by Johannes, who sounds even more infernal in House of The Black Moon, with Kari’s utterly deep guttural adding an extra touch of heaviness to the band’s core Blackened Death Metal. Then the band goes full Death Metal in The Locust Scar, with the guitars by the band’s axed duo exhaling heaviness and hatred, whereas a sluggish, Doom Metal-infused start gradually evolves into another demented beast by Sepulchral Curse entitled Beneath The Dismal Tides, with Niilas and Johannes building the heaviest ambience of all songs armed with their demonic kitchen.

Then investing in a more melodic sonority it’s time for Empress of The Dead, without of course forgetting the band’s trademark bludgeoning sounds; whereas their second to last sonic attack comes in the form of The Currents of Chaos, with Kari roaring deeply like a demonic creature supported by the vile riffs by Jaakko and Aleksi. Finally, the band brings forward Crimson Passages, again blasting our damned souls with their Doom Metal-infused blackened sounds, showcasing crisp, piercing guitar lines in paradox with the inhumane, gruesome gnarls by Kari, resulting in not only one hell of a bestial song, but also putting a beyond phantasmagorical and haunting conclusion to one of the heaviest albums of the year.

“The backbone is death metal,” states vocalist Kari Kankaanpää about their newborn beast, “but we’ve never shied away from exploring new inspirations and influences, which shape the unique edge synonymous with Sepulchral Curse. Music needs to be dark, heavy and furious!” Crimson Moon Evocations indeed takes an even deeper dive into who Sepulchral Curse are and crystallizes the essence of their sound, helping the band to ascend to the pinnacle of Blackened Death Metal. Hence, if you want to “stay cursed” as the band’s frontman likes to say, you can find the band on Facebook and on Instagram, stream their wicked creations on Spotify or any other streaming service, and obviously grab a copy of their new album from the Dark Descent Records’ BandCamp or webstore in the US and the EU, or simply click HERE for all things Sepulchral Curse. In a nutshell, Crimson Moon Evocations is utterly dark, evil and, more important than that, extremely heavy, paving a fantastic path ahead of those Finnish beasts in the years to come.

Concert Review – Brother Firetribe (Logomo, Turku, Finland, 04/06/2024)

The Headbanging Moose goes to Finland! A night of party and amazing hard rock anthems with Brother Firetribe in the lovely city of Turku kicked off the Spring season in the Land of Ice and Snow.

OPENING ACT: Trust No One

That’s right! The Headbanging Moose is now partially in Finland. Many moons ago, I, Renata Santos, helped Gustavo with some concerts and albums reviews all the way from Brazil. Now living in Finland, I get the chance to see great bands every now and then and I’ll try my best to bring these reviews to you, The Headbanging Moose audience. And to celebrate this restart here, nothing better than an evening with BROTHER FIRETRIBE, one of the most admired hard rock bands of the country. In the vibrant city of Turku, the concert room of Logomo was ignited by their electrifying performance as part of the Band on a Mission tour.

To start the evening, the crowd was treated to a great performance by TRUST NO ONE, an Electronic Rock/New Romantic Finnish duo formed by Samuli Erkkilä and Joni Suhonen. They combine elements of 80s-influenced synth-pop and vibrant guitar rock, captivating with their charisma. The band took the audience on a journey to the rhythm of virtuosic synth riffs and guitar solos. Among their original compositions, they played a new song called Let Them Fall and also delighted the audience with a mesmerizing cover of Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode, showcasing their versatility and musical prowess. It was the first time I saw this band and I am really sorry I don’t know the songs, but Trust No One’s performance provided a perfect prelude to the night’s festivities. You can listen to their songs on Spotify and check on their updates on Instagram.

BROTHER FIRETRIBE

After a break to prepare the stage, BROTHER FIRETRIBE emerged under the spotlight. Frontman Pekka Heino commanded the stage with his captivating vocals, while Jason Flinck, Tommi Nikulainen, Hannes Pirilä and Roope Riihijärvi complete a formidable musical force. The setlist was a journey through the band’s illustrious career, showcasing their signature blend of hard rock and melodic hooks. Kicking off with the adrenaline-fueled Break Out, they seamlessly transitioned into songs I Am Rock and Man on a Mission, igniting a frenzy among the crowd.

Hard Rock anthems like Chariot of Fire and Indelible Heroes showcased the band’s full potential, just like the new single Are You Ready?, an instant success. Pekka said a couple of times that that was a “juhlapäivä” (a party day, in Finnish) and the fans definitely partied with them. Brother Firetribe’s ability to engage and connect with their audience was evident throughout the night, especially with the charisma of the vocalist that sings looking into the fans’ eyes and ask them to sing along in every song, creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration. As the main set drew to a close, the band hit the stage with For Better or for Worse and Heart Full of Fire.

Brother Firetribe’s performance at Logomo was nothing short of spectacular, cementing their status as one of Finland’s premier rock acts. They delivered a show filled with passion, energy, and infectious melodies, leaving fans exhilarated and wanting more. Album Review – Malefic By Design / Definitive Indication of Supremacy (2018)

Behold a band of underground veterans from Finland and their deadly debut full-length strike, a pulverizing opus that will summon you to a claustrophobic journey through blazing Armageddon.

Founded in 2015 in the city of Turku, Finland by underground metal veterans Mika Ikonen on vocals, Ville Pekkala, Sasu Haapanen and Miska Lehtivuori on the guitars and Antti Hakkala on drums (and if you haven’t noticed yet, there’s no bass player in their current lineup), who by the way have already released several previous efforts through multiple bands such as Searing Meadow, Ablaze In Hatred, Fall of the Leafe, Mormânt De Snagov and Devastracktor, Blackened Death Metal beast Malefic By Design has just released their deadly debut full-length strike, titled Definitive Indication of Supremacy, a pulverizing collection of catchy choruses and incendiary melodies that will certainly please all fans of modern extreme music.

Recorded in quiet solitude and far away from the public eye, Definitive Indication of Supremacy thoroughly blends the band’s Death Metal core essence with nuances from other styles such as Black and Doom Metal, summoning you to a sinister and claustrophobic journey through blazing Armageddon surrounded by a somber and devilish atmosphere.  The dark and primeval cover art is a good indication of what you’re going to face as soon as you hit play and start listening to the 12 Stygian tracks from Definitive Indication of Supremacy, showing Malefic By Design are among us to spread evil, hate and blasphemy. What else can you ask for in first-class Blackened Death Metal, right?

The atmospheric and eerie intro Descending Sirens Of Evil opens the gates of the underworld to the demolishing Sickness Of Christ, a heavy and obscure Blackened Death Metal hymn with Mika delivering disturbing, deep growls while Antti dictates the rhythm with his precise beats. Then it’s time for almost seven minutes of pulverizing sounds and tones in Impending Doom, bringing together the most demonic elements of Black and Death Metal, with the band’s guitarists blasting a “melodic hell” with their strings; and the band goes full Black Metal in the visceral and brutal Enslaved By Birth, where Mika sounds more demented than before while Ville, Sasu and Miska bring forth another feast of satanic riffs and solos, resulting in one of the most complete (and therefore best) moments of the album.

Leaning towards traditional Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal, the band fires harmonious and visceral lines in the mid-tempo composition titled Repress The Oblivious, being beyond perfect for headbanging like a true disciple of darkness, whereas in Frozen Phantoms an ominous acoustic intro morphs into another explosion of blackened music by Malefic By Design, with the whole band being in some sort of demonic sync led by the boisterous drums by Antti, with Mika’s growls getting deeper and deeper as the music progresses. And Salvation For Everyone showcases hints of Symphonic Black Metal before reaching a frantic and heavy pace spearheaded by the once again furious drums by Antti, all embraced by a sinister background full of uncanny keyboard notes and sheer heaviness.

Medieval Beliefs is an old school Black and Death Metal creation tailored for succumbing to the dark side and snapping your neck headbanging, with the band’s stringed trio firing more of their diabolical riffs, creating an instant connection with the also very melodic Counterstrike Despise, also closer to more modern Melodic Death Metal while maintaining a vile aura in the background. Furthermore, Mika and his sick gnarls make a good balance with the delicate but fierce riffs by Ville, Sasu and Miska, which is also the case in Regenerated Reflections, an eerie fusion of contemporary Death Metal with traditional waltz (if that makes sense to you), also presenting elements from Doom and Dark Metal, and that amalgamation of styles results in a bold and thrilling chant with highlights to its beyond eccentric and obscure vocal lines. Then an enfolding atmosphere builds the stage for the heavy, mid-tempo Black Metal tune At The Gates, which despite being a good song it’s below the rest of the album in terms of electricity, falling flat after a while, fading into the acoustic outro Satanic Harmony, an interesting way to “depressurize” from all the madness blasted during the entire album.

In summary, Definitive Indication of Supremacy, which is available for a full listen on Spotify and for purchase through several channels such as the More Hate Productions’ BandCamp, Keltainen Jäänsärkijä, Record Shop X, iTunes, Amazon and Discogs, not only brings top-tier Blackened Death Metal to your avid ears from start to finish, but it also positions Malefic By Design as one of the strongest new names in contemporary Scandinavian extreme music. Now it’s just a matter of seeing how impactful their debut album will be on Finnish territory as well as worldwide, and when we’ll be able to savor more of the band’s pugnacious malignancy in the form of a new album.

Album Review – Autere / Amal’l (2014)

Melodic and professional metal music directly from Finland to inspire you for some good headbanging and mosh pits.

Rating5

Autere_-_Amall_coverAfter 12 years of existence, including a few demos, one EP, some significant lineup changes and about 100 live performances, Finnish Melodic Death/Groove Metal band Autere is finally releasing their first full-length album, entitled Amal’l, a very modern metal album that was definitely worth the entire wait, especially if you are a fan of the heavy riffs and huge doses of melody and energy found in Melodic Death Metal.

As you will notice while listening to this album, this five-piece metal band from Turku, Finland already has some considerable experience in the world of heavy music, with each member being part of other bands such as Trespassenger, Damnesty, Black Sleep and Jacks Over Kings. Add to this strong music background a very professional production and you’ll see why Amal’l sounds so solid compared to the debut albums from many other metal bands.

With vocals à la Pantera (“BUUURRRN!”), the headbanging tune Burn opens the album as the band’s “business card”, being so heavy even its melodic but not too mellow clean vocals keep up with the song’s ferocity, while in the more rhythmic and intense Circle Of Kinetic Damage, with its technical riffs and strong chorus, the influence by Arch Enemy and other Swedish Melodic Death Metal bands is noticeable. Besides, songs like this one show us why the band has been playing live concerts together for so long, as it has a great level of energy to entertain most types of metalheads.

autere_promo1The more modern Redeemers gets closer to American Metalcore, with its harsh and clean vocals making an interesting combination full of harmony, while Lines visibly focuses on its riffs as the base of the entire song, with its harsh vocals and nice guitar solo at the end intensifying the overall result. In the following track, Horizon, Autere get back to a Pantera-ish sonority, with highlights to its breaks and melody and to drummer Tatu Turunen for being so precise with his drum set.

Carbon showcases a faster and more violent side of the band, sounding even more “Americanized” but without losing that harmonious European punch, with its chorus being really catchy and entertaining, while in Bloodlands the band’s headbanging machine keeps working at full power, with guitarists Joona Alamäki and Petri Huhtala kicking ass with their riffs. And there are still two more songs to go: Veils Of Faith keeps the momentum going with its nice flow accompanied by the vocal lines by Anssi Rissa, ending in a very strong way; and Allies, slower than all other songs and with a heavy focus on its main riff, gets a little tiring after two minutes, albeit not being a boring song at all.

In summary, Amal’l, which can be purchased at the online Inverse Store, is a straightforward album directly from the land of ice and snow that will satisfy your craving for melodic metal music, and will surely inspire you for some good headbanging and mosh pits.

Best moments of the album: Circle Of Kinetic Damage, Horizon and Carbon.
