Album Review – Imha Tarikat / Confessing Darkness (2025)

The extermination sect from Germany is back with its fourth studio album, once again pushing hard against all the boundaries that define Black Metal.

Everything about German Black Metal entity Imha Tarikat has always been real, the anger, the despair, the hatred, the bursts of energy, the eternal longing, and also the boundless passion both on record and live on stage that borders on physical self-destruction. On their fourth album, titled Confessing Darkness, such an innovative creature is once again pushing hard against all the boundaries that define the Black Metal genre without ever losing the essential connection to the harsh style. Recorded and mixed by Michael Zech at The Church of Sound Studio, mastered by Victor Santura at Woodshed Studio, and with a sinister artwork by Sofia Buratti of Silvatica Illustration and layout by Łukasz Jaszak, the follow-up to their 2022 opus Hearts Unchained – At War with a Passionless World delivers even more of the band’s raw energy than before, with a relentless pushing and unstoppable drive forward characterizing their sound, as well as a deep emotional intelligence that fully utilizes the ability of Black Metal to express every feeling ranging from purest love to darkest hatred, from severe depression to outbursts of joy, all masterfully crafted by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Kerem Yilmaz (aka Ruhsuz Cellât), while also featuring guest drummer Jerome Reil (of bands like Destroy Them, Exumer, and The Very End).

The absolutely atmospheric intro Aufbruch, which means “departure” in English, will open the gates of the netherworld for Kerem to strike us all with Wicked Shrine, where he barks rabidly while also firing wicked riffs and bass lines, supported by the Stygian beats and fills by Jerome. Then leaning towards the more recent creations by the mighty Behemoth we have Another Failed Ritual, with the project’s Blackened Death Metal side lurking in the shadows ready to prey on us, whereas Kerem extracts strident, mesmerizing sounds from his guitar in Voices of Bitter Epiphany, exploding into a feast of Black Metal led by Jerome’s pounding drums. In Excellent Grief the dauntless Kerem continues to distill his venomous vocalizations and riffage, keeping the album as harsh and sinister as it can be; and the title-track Confessing Darkness brings forward Imha Tarikat’s most unrelenting version, with Kerem bursting his lungs screaming in anguish and despair.

Chamber of Sin is another song where Jerome shows no mercy for his drums, blasting sheer heaviness while Kerem continues to drag us to pitch black darkness with his riffs and vociferations. Then we face Horns in the Smoke, which carries a beautiful name for an onrush of Melodic Black Metal where Jerome’s beats and fills walk hand in hand with Kerem’s harsh roars. Memoria Dei (Profanity and Devil) also presents a classy name, albeit not as exciting as the rest of the album (despite its pleasant pace), while Pitch Black Reflection, the second to last song of the album, is a brutal, austere explosion of Black Metal tailored for lovers of the style, with Kerem sounding infernal with both his riffs and cryptic vocal lines. Finally, The Day I Died (Reborn into Flames) closes Kerem’s Black Metal mass in great fashion, with all violence, darkness and hatred flowing from all instruments living up to the legacy of the genre.

Taking the aforementioned personal confessions several steps further as it is all true, Imha Tarikat have matured as Confessing Darkness clearly demonstrates, overflowing conviction and strength while also marking a milestone in the rise of the band. Album Review – The Spirit / Songs Against Humanity (2024)

This ruthless German duo brings forth a compilation of songs against humanity in their newborn Blackened Death Metal beast.

Formed in Saarbrücken in 2015, The Spirit have emerged from the depths of the German Extreme Metal void to breathe new life into the Black and Death Metal genre. Now in 2024 the duo formed of Matthias Trautes on vocals and stringed weapons, and Manuel Steitz on drums attacks again with their fourth full-length installment, titled Songs Against Humanity. Mixed by V. Santura (Triptykon) at Woodshed Studio, and displaying a grim artwork by Eliran Kantor, Songs Against Humanity is a Blackened Death Metal beast highly recommended for fans of Harakiri For The Sky, Dissection, Satyricon, UADA, Hypocrisy and Kataklysm, among others, circling around an astronomic leitmotif in its lyrics and concepts while mixing a misanthropic view on the world with cosmic metaphors and the call to see our often narrow-minded and egocentric existence in the larger context of our whole universe.

It’s absolute chaos and hatred from the very first notes in Against Humanity, with Manuel taking the lead with his Thrash Metal-inspired drumming while Matthias roars like a beast in the name of extreme music, followed by Room 101, presenting psychological lyrics barked by Matthias (“Suppressing the words of sanity / As we lost our way towards utopia / Instead evolved into a dystopian nightmare / When technological progress / Gave rise to the indoctrination of the human mind”) amidst a melodic yet visceral sound. And the duo continues to venture through the realms of Melodic Death, Thrash and Black Metal in Cosmic Rain and Human Dust, sounding ruthless until the very end, with Matthias’ riffs feeling absolutely caustic.

Spectres of Terror is another explosion of austere, infernal words barked by Matthias (“A grotesque embrace / Of an impending misery / When the past and sense / Are displaced by ideology / Madness and insanity / A grim bane you invoked”), whereas Death is my Salvation offers a more introspective, progressive side of the band, with Matthias slashing his axe manically accompanied by the always venomous beats and fills by Manuel. Then we’re treated to Nothingness Forever, which begins in a serene, grim manner before evolving into a straightforward Black Metal aria led by the crushing drums by Manuel. Finally, we have the extended outro Orbiting Sol IV, which despite being a solid tune, it ends up taking away some of the electricity from the album due to its length.

Album Review – Imha Tarikat / Hearts Unchained – At War with a Passionless World (2022)

Vicious and vitriolic, full of raw anger and burning hatred, the new album by this German Black Metal entity will pulverize your senses mercilessly.

Vicious and vitriolic, full of raw anger and burning hatred, yet at the same time bursting with live and lingering on moments of astonishing beauty, Hearts Unchained – At War with a Passionless World, the third full-length opus by German Black Metal entity Imha Tarikat (Turkish for “extermination sect”), announces its inherent contradictions and struggles already in the title. Recorded and produced by the band’s mastermind Kerem Yilmaz (aka Ruhsuz Cellât), mixed by Michael Zech, mastered by Victor Santura (of Triptykon) at Woodshed Studio, and displaying a sinister cover and illustration by Artem Grigoryev (with sigil and additional illustration by Next Gate Art, and additional illustration by Raul CJ Peña), Hearts Unchained – At War with a Passionless World is essentially a Black Metal album in the crackling dry and humorless German style that renounces all bombast and often folk-ish undertones of its Nordic counterparts, with Kerem Yilmaz creating new layers and expanding the dimensions of his unique compositions, supported by session drummer Melvin Cieslar (of Hexer).

Absolutely atmospheric and sinister, Intro – Deeper Within will drag your soul to the Stygian lair of Imha Tarikat before all hell breaks loose in Radical Righteousness, a song that deals with the detachment from addiction to emotional suffering, with Kerem screaming in anger nonstop accompanied by his own scorching riffs and the demented but very intricate drumming by Melvin. Touch Of Mercy starts in a serene, melodic manner to the beautiful guitar lines by Kerem, blending elements from the most primeval form of Black Metal with Progressive and Experimental Metal, whereas Brute Majesty is another song that exhales chaos, insanity and fury, with Melvin sounding bestial on drums while Kerem’s vocals get more and more rabid as the music evolves. And Flood Of Love (The Beast Trigger) will grab you by your throat and choke the life out of your body, sounding massive, sharp and caustic from start to finish, with Kerem stealing the show with his wicked riffs and vile roars.

The phantasmagorical (and a bit lengthy) Interlude – Birth Of Grandeur breaks the album in two, setting the tone for the second half starting with Dominator Proselytism Tactics, offering our ears a very dynamic, straightforward Black Metal sonority led by Melvin’s wicked beats. Put differently, it’s a truly infernal creation by Imha Tarikat, which can also be said about Streams Of Power – Canavar, presenting an incendiary Punk Rock/Hardcore vibe the likes of Misfits. It’s the less Black Metal of all songs, yet still acid and thrilling, not to mention the rumbling bass by Kerem is a thing of beauty; while Stardust Wisdom (Manifest Of The Deity To The Unkeen) is another strident, heavy-as-hell tune where Kerem’s anguished vocals walk hand in hand with the pounding drums by Melvin. And last but not least, it’s time for another obscure extravaganza entitled Beast Of Sovereignty, showcasing Kerem’s trademark vocals and riffs always supported by Melvin and his demented drums.

Album Review – Svartulven / Ruins of Desolation, Transcendence for the Other Side (2021)

Immerse yourself into the 40 minutes of Orthodox Black Metal split into seven obscure arias carefully crafted by an up-and-coming horde from the Hellenic Republic.

If you’re an admirer of the darkest side of extreme music it’s time for you to enjoy some Orthodox Black Metal made in Greece in the vein of Misotheist and Ascension, courtesy of an occult and mystic entity known as Svartulven armed with their debut opus entitled Ruins of Desolation, Transcendence for the Other Side. Mixed by Nikos Trialonis at Goblin’s Lair Studios in Greece, mastered by V.Santura at Woodshed Studio in Germany, and displaying a cryptic cover artwork by Adrian Baxter, the album brings forward 40 minutes of ass-kicking Black Metal split into seven obscure arias carefully crafted by this up-and-coming horde from the Hellenic Republic.

Arising from the depths of the underworld, this uncanny band comes ripping with their phantasmagorical sounds in Witness of Fire Beyond, with its venomous roars and strident riffs penetrating deep inside your psyche in a great display of sulfurous Black Metal, whereas Svartulven in Twilight begins in full force with its pounding drums hammering our cranial skulls mercilessly, also displaying an amazing fusion of visceral screams with some background vocalizations and, therefore, being highly recommended for fans of a more progressive and diverse style of Black Metal. And continuing their path of devastation, obscurity and evil, Svartulven deliver the straightforward extravaganza Therianthropic Metamorphosis, again presenting classic blast beats, Stygian guitars, low-tuned bass lines, and a crushing sense of despair that permeates the air until the very last second.

The Parable of Abel offers us all five minutes of sheer darkness in the form of old school Black Metal, or in other words, it’s another amazing example of what the band is capable of doing, with the song’s razor-edged riffs generating a pulverizing paradox with its groovy bass jabs. Back to a more classic sound, Herald of Eternal Damnation presents a mid-tempo start spearheaded by their always harsh vociferations that explodes into an avalanche of brutality and violence, resulting in a lecture in Black Metal by such talented Hellenic outfit. Their second to last onrush of extreme music comes in the form of Feast for the Black Earth, again showcasing a heavier-than-hell kitchen, a sinister atmosphere and sharp riffs for our total delight, before the band crushes us one last time with The Crystal Scythe of the Old, a beyond caustic composition where its wicked vocals and a disturbing ambience will haunt our damned souls until all fades into the unknown.
