Album Review – Drofnosura / Ritual of Split Tongues (2025)

A strange beast that’s absolutely comfortable in its own iridescent, translucent skin, this Canadian entity will stun us all with their expansive, stirring, and dissonant new album.

A strange beast that’s absolutely comfortable in its own iridescent, translucent skin, Toronto, Canada-based Blackened/Atmospheric Sludge/Post-Metal entity Drofnosura has been taking elements from multiple styles since their inception back in 2010, finely grounding them, and using the material to sculpt a new body entirely, just like what they have to offer in their sophomore opus Ritual of Split Tongues, following up on their scathing 2019 debut Voidfever. Showcasing a beyond menacing, disturbing artwork by Dusty Ray Art, the new album by W.L.F. on guitars, vocals, and synthesizers, M.A.D. on bass, vocals and synthesizers, and D.A.S. on drums, percussion, vocals and synthesizers sees the band traversing various realms, with a few songs surpassing the 15-minute mark, putting the emphasis on creating a meditative, transcendent atmosphere more than anything else.

Like a vile creature arising from the pits of the netherworld, the trio comes crushing our cranial skulls mercilessly in Selection of a Corpse, with the hammering drums by D.A.S. and the visceral guitars by W.L.F. complementing each other in great fashion. Then in the context of Hindu cremation, Kapala Kriya is a ritual where the skull of the deceased is pierced with a stick during the cremation process, while in heavy music it’s a ten-minute demented creation by Drofnosura where their venomous, minimalist vocal lines will haunt your damned souls for all eternity, sounding almost like the actual Hindu ritual. Then the title-track The Ritual of Split Tongues brings to our putrid ears over 15 minutes of primeval, sinister Doom Metal with Post-Black Metal elements led by the once again slow but fierce beats by D.A.S., followed by ἐγείρω (egeirō), a Greek verb that primarily means to raise, awaken, or stir up. It can also mean to wake up from sleep or to be awakened, as well as it can refer to the act of resurrecting or raising someone from the dead, resulting in a ritualistic interlude that sets the tone for The Well of Seven Heads, where the band shows absolutely no mercy for our damned minds and bodies while their Atmospheric Sludge Metal vein pulses harder than ever during its venomous 12 minutes, flowing into the also atmospheric, gloomy and dissonant Desounen, putting a Stygian ending to an album not recommended for the lighthearted.

Highly recommended for admirers of the music by Blut aus Nord, Devenial Verdict, Eibon, Amenra, Lurk, Isis, Pillar of Light, and The Angelic Process, among others, Ritual of Split Tongues is an astounding album where multiple influences converge to create music that’s at once expansive, stirring, and dissonant, and lingers on in the mind for longer than one would think, with the music naturally evolving within each of the songs as they progress, and it isn’t fatiguing just because it’s done in such an intuitive manner. In the end, Ritual of Split Tongues is certainly not an album for the lighthearted as mentioned, but let’s face it, that’s exactly what Drofnosura wanted to achieve with their multi-layered, grim and absolutely stunning new album.

Concert Review – Crypta (The Garrison, Toronto, ON, 10/08/2025)

On a cooler night in Toronto, metalheads from all over the city had an absolute blast with one of the must-see Death Metal beasts from the worldwide extreme music scene.

OPENING ACTS: Pretty Face and Death Club

This Wednesday was by far the coolest day from the past three or four months in Toronto, but that didn’t stop the metalheads from different parts of the city to head to The Garrison for a sold out show with PRETTY FACE, DEATH CLUB and CRYPTA during their In the Other Side Tour 2025, another killer event organized by the unstoppable Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment. As the first band was only going to hit the stage at 8pm, I decided to take my time at home, had proper dinner, relaxed a little, and therefore avoided the chaotic madness of QEW during rush hour. Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi got to the venue a little earlier to get ready to take some amazing shots of all bands, which by the way are all led by super talented ladies who make heavy music way better, heavier, and more fun. The merch selection was also great for all bands, including some kick-ass guitar picks from Crypta, and everything with good quality and for a reasonable price. Not only that, the variety of beer and other drinks at The Garrison is way bigger and cheaper than at bigger venues like Budweiser Stage. Supporting the underground definitely has its advantages, with the main one being the much lighter impact on your pocket for an even higher amount of adrenaline and energy onstage.

On a side note, before and after the bands kicked some serious ass onstage, I had the pleasure of chatting with the organizers of the Icelandic festival named Satán, who were on vacation in the city, enjoying a few concerts like Judas Priest/Alice Cooper last week, and Crypta this Wednesday. Gísli Sigmundsson, an Icelandic metal legend who fronts the old school Death Metal band Sororicide, and Kristján Guðmundsson, drummer for the ruthless Blackened Death Metal horde Nexion, were having an amazing time at The Garrison, and of course I enjoyed a lot talking to them about heavy music and both the Canadian and the Icelandic underground scenes. I told Kristján that Nexion must come to Toronto for a show, to which he replied “do people enjoy that type of blasphemic music here?” Well, I guess I don’t even need to say what I answered to him, right? And if you have the time and money available for a trip next summer, the Satán festival is happening between June 4 and 6, 2026. Who knows, maybe I can visit Iceland for a share of their own blasphemy then.

Labeled as a queer-fem metal band hailing from Brampton, Ontario, expressing experiences and struggles growing up as teenage fem-presenting people through their music, PRETTY FACE kicked off the party with their fusion of Hardcore with elements of Death and Doom Metal, and the reaction of the fans at The Garrison was excellent. Although they only have one song officially released, the 2024 single The Gore Road, available on Spotify, those girls sounded excellent onstage and showed endless energy during their short but effective set. I have zero idea of which songs they played, or who the band members are as there’s nothing online about that (and I’m sorry, but I forgot to ask them in person after their show), but those girls have a bright future ahead of them. As long as they release an EP or a full-length album in the coming months to keep their momentum going, of course.

The second opening band of the night was another local band, Hamilton, Ontario-based modern Sludge Metal/Deathcore act DEATH CLUB, who released their debut Betrayal back in 2024, available on both BandCamp and Spotify. Formed of Dana Bowman on vocals and guitar, Adam Baldwin on bass and backing vocals, and Chelsea Todd on drums, plus another unknown musician who’s probably just their tour guitarist (and again, sorry for not asking him his name), the band kept the heaviness flowing inside The Garrison, which was already packed by the time they hit the stage. You can get more details about the band by clicking HERE, and if they ever play a concert at your city or town, I highly recommend you go watch them live because their music is great, and their stage presence is just as awesome.

CRYPTA

There was some uncertainty in the air if the indomitable Brazilian Death Metal beast CRYPTA was actually going to play this Wednesday night in Toronto as the iconic Fernanda Lima and another one of her bandmates got stuck at the Canadian border when trying to cross it from the United States, forcing them to fly from a city near Buffalo into YYZ and going straight to the venue for the show. Fortunately, those girls are absolute badass, and nothing would stop them from delivering their slab of Death Metal to one of their most loyal fanbase worldwide. The band was on absolute fire from the very first seconds of one of my favorite Crypta songs, The Other Side of Anger, and their setlist blending their two album Echoes of the Soul (2021) and Shades of Sorrow (2023), both available on BandCamp and on Spotify, brought sheer chaos and anarchy to The Garrison to the point Keith didn’t even dare to try to get a spot in front of the stage for his photos. Yes, it was wild.

Fernanda was insane on stage as usual, the mesmerizing Tainá Bergamaschi kept shredding her axe in great fashion, headbanging like a maniac, and making what was supposed to be an “angry” face during the heaviest parts of their songs (although she looks way to nice and cool to really look angry), Luana Dametto showed no mercy for our necks and bodies, crushing her drums nonstop for our total delight (therefore igniting some demented mosh pits), and their new touring guitarist Victoria Villarreal, from bands like Chaos Rising and Syrebris, proved why she was chosen by the band to support them on this tour, also kicking some serious ass with her flammable riffs and solos. I just think the overall sound volume was a bit low, but nothing that could make their performance less demolishing.

Some of the songs were phenomenal live, including Kali, The Outsider, Stronghold, Starvation, and of course From the Ashes, and when you have that high quality material in your hands like the girls from Crypta do, you can rest assured you’re in for a treat when they take the stage of your city by storm like this Wednesday night in Toronto. Not only that, Fernanda might be one of the sweetest musicians from the current scene worldwide, as even after going through all that hassle to make it to Toronto for the show she didn’t leave the stage after their concert was done, taking photos, signing albums and shirts, and chatting with each and every fan that stayed at The Garrison way past 11pm to meet one of the most talented women in heavy music. Toronto loves you, girls! And we’re ready for another round of your ruthless Death Metal anytime you decide to return to our metallic city.

Concert Review – Signs of the Swarm (The Mod Club, Toronto, ON, 10/03/2025)

OPENING ACTS: Face Yourself, Carcosa, Ten56 and Mental Cruelty

Friday October the 3rd, 2025 The Mod Club located in Toronto’s Little Italy neighborhood played host to a night of pure deathcore delight, with such bands as FACE YOURSELF, CARCOSA, TEN56, MENTAL CRUELTY and headlining act SIGNS OF THE SWARM, another amazing event organized by our metal hero Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment. Headbangers from across the Greater Toronto Area enjoyed a night of self-inflicted whiplash and bodily torment as they moshed their brains out to some kick ass, heavy and hard as fuck deathcore from start to finish. I was also pleased to see that the venue now had a photo pit/barrier as well as a newly remodeled stage.

From the onset, New York band FACE YOURSELF, who has just released an amazing new EP titled Fury, had the crowd moshing in circle pits for the entire duration of their incredible and energetic first set. I could barely look away from the drummer the whole time as he was clad in a shirt with the face of Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys on it and couldn’t shake the image of Bubbs slaying on the drum kit out of head to my own personal delight. Lead vocalist Yasmin Liverneaux Belkhodja has quite a set of pipes on her that could strip the paint off the walls and could curdle blood with her guttural screams. Face Yourself totally kicked ass to open up the show. 10/10

Next up was CARCOSA, a band created by Viral TikTokers Andrew Baena and Johnny Ciardullo out of Vancouver, British Columbia. They were absolutely brutal and didn’t let the crowd slack up, not even for a second. These guys crushed it on stage with their blend of doom & gloom, brutality, sick breakdowns, low end bass drops and humour. I also caught Andrew’s pick at the end of their set. The last album released by those guys was the EP Wrath of the Tyrant, back in 2022, which means I don’t think it will take long for them to attack us all again with their undisputed blend of death metal and hardcore. C’mon, Carcosa! WE need new music from you guys asap!  10/10

French deathcore outfit TEN56 came on next and delivered a fantastic set which kept the crowd frantic and buzzing with energy. Non-stop moshing was the theme of the night. I found their drummer Arnaud Verrier to be quite impressive and he reminded me a lot of Dave Grohl mixed with Mario Duplantier. I kept getting blasted in the face with puffs of air from the bass drum as it was directly in line with me in the front row, and as I left the venue towards the end of the show I ran into Arnaud on the street outside of the club and he told me he was looking at me the whole set, and noticed that he was not exactly set up perfectly straight on to which I let him know that I felt the percussive air puffs hitting my face and thanked him for the air conditioning. I let him know that he is a hell of a drummer. Ten56 were seriously good. 10/10

Germany’s MENTAL CRUELTY was up next and they proceeded to absolutely destroy. The crowd ratcheted up even more and exploded into wave after wave of crowd surfers and lead vocalist Lukas Nicolai eventually made his way closer to the crowd and braced by fans and balanced on top of the barrier where he continued to melt faces. The audience was losing its collective mind for Mental Cruelty. This band is pretty fuckin’ sick! Thier new song Helheim, which features the guys from Signs of the Swarm in its studio version, was a nice addition to their setlist, and a great indication of what to expect from those Germans after their 2023 masterpiece Zwielicht.  10/10

SIGNS OF THE SWARM

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania deathcore gods SIGNS OF THE SWARM headlined the show with a intensely killer set. Having just released their new album To Rid Myself of Truth, SOTS are always awesome to see live as they are one of those bands that burn with such intensity, brutality and raw aggression. Vocalist David Simonich blew me away with his brutal gutturals and sheer power. His vocals cutting straight through all of the brutally intense instrumentation to deliver a sonic assault not unlike a shotgun blast to the chest. The audience was in a frenzy with moshing in the circle pit when I decided my body couldn’t take any more of the brutality. My neck and back were sore from all of my non-stop headbanging and I regret that I couldn’t stay until the very end. I ended up out front of the club where my brother Keith and I ran into Members of Carcosa and Ten56. We shot the shit and got out of there as soon as possible while thanking them for a great show. I have no doubt in my mind that the crowd had an amazing time. 10/10

Album Review – Ültra Raptör / Fossilized (2025)

The fast and furious Cadillac driving dinosaurs hailing from Canada will rock your world to the sound of their incendiary sophomore full-length album.

Formed in 2015 in the charming Quebec City, and having already released their self-titled debut EP in 2018 and their first ever full-length album Tyrants in 2021, Heavy/Speed Metal antediluvian creatures Ültra Raptör are back with album number two, the incendiary Fossilized. Recorded, mixed and mastered by David Lizotte, and displaying an insane artwork by Mario López, the new beast by Phil T. Lung on vocals, Criss Raptör and Zoltan Saurus on the guitars, Dick Van Heuß on bass, and Tony Bronco on drums offers another round of the band’s blend of primeval speed and savagery with meticulous, precision playing, or in other words, everything a metal hungry headbanger could ask for and more.

Those prehistorical Québécois warriors already put the pedal to the metal in the title-track Fossilized, with the frantic, sharp riffs by Criss and Zoltan bringing even more adrenaline to their striking Speed Metal sound. Then the glory of the 80’s, or maybe I should say from “metal’s prehistoric age”, comes in full force in Spinosaurus, led by the hammering drums by Tony in a headbanging feast of heavy music. In Hard ‘N Fast that’s exactly what you’ll get, with Phil T. Lung stealing the show with his old school, passionate vocals, sounding perfect for some action on the dance floor; and Criss and Zoltan show no mercy for their stringed axes in Livin’ for the Riff, delivering nonstop incendiary riffs and solos just the way we love it in Thrash Metal, followed by Bitter Leaf, which starts in a weird way before morphing into a decent thrashing tune, despite still lacking an extra kick.

They get back on track with an 80’s-inspired rock and metal train titled X-Celerator, offering more of the band’s trademark riffs and the raspy vocals by Phil T. Lung, and the band keeps speeding things up and invading our senses with their Thrash Metal-infused sounds in Pterö-Ranger, living up to the legacy of the genre. Those Canadian bastards will invite us to slam into the circle pit once again and shake our bodies to the sound of Down the Drain, where Criss and Zoltan will cut your skin deep with their caustic riffage. Then in the interlude Le voyageur d’Oort, melodious guitar lines will transport you to the whimsical world ruled by Ültra Raptör before facing the closing tune Face the Challenge, a pure Hard Rock and Rock N’ Roll feast inspired by giants the likes of Scorpions, perfect for heading out to the highway with your beloved ones.

In summary, the impact of the new opus by the Cadillac driving dinosaurs from Canada on the metal scene will be seismic. Fossilized is the epitome of energized, exhilarating metal, and you can join the band in their quest for fast and heavy music by following them on Facebook and on Instagram, by streaming their thrilling creations on Spotify, and of course by purchasing Fossilized from the Fighter Records’ BandCamp or from the Xtreem Music’s webstore. The Raptör is back, baby! Concert Review – Rhapsody of Fire (The Garrison, Toronto, ON, 09/20/2025)

A night of pure Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, beer, mosh pits, walls of death, swords, shields, dragons, wizards, dwarves, and the best of the best of the best in Toronto.

OPENING ACTS: Witherfall, Striker and Enforcer

If you enjoy the fusion of Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, beer, mosh pits, walls of death, swords, shields, dragons, wizards and dwarves, then The Garrison in Toronto was the place for you to be this Saturday when the amazing WHITERFALL, STRIKER, ENFORCER and RHAPSODY OF FIRE took the city by storm with their most excellent Challenge the Wind / Dawn of Victory 25 Year Celebration – North America Tour 2025, another ass-kicking event brought to the city by Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment. And just like a miracle or a magic trick done by a headbanging wizard, traffic to get to the city was smooth and easy, allowing both Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I to get to the venue with plenty of time before the festivities started. There was construction on the way back on QEW which made the return trip a true nightmare, but I can’t complain as at least this time I was able to watch the whole event from the very first second.

If you know nothing about Los Angeles, California-based Progressive Heavy/Power Metal band WHITERFALL, I highly recommend you go after their music on Spotify or by clicking HERE, as those guys are incredible live and totally worth the price of a ticket to see them onstage. Still promoting their 2024 album Sounds of the Forgotten, the band formed of Joseph Michael on vocals and keyboards, Jake Dreyer on the guitars, Anthony Crawford on bass, Gerry Hirshfeld on keyboards and guitars, and Chris Tsaganeas on drums put on a fantastic performance at the small but cozy The Garrison, properly warming us all for the upcoming attractions of the night. I must say Insidious, one of the songs played form their new album, sounded majestic live, flawlessly uniting the energy of traditional Heavy Metal with the intricacy of Progressive Metal, and the reaction by the crowd was just as powerful. Well, when you have a guy like Jake Dryer on the guitars, known for his excellent work with bands like Iced Earth, Demons & Wizards, and Kobra and the Lotus, you know you’re in for a treat, and I can’t wait to see Witherfall in Toronto again in the near future.

After a short break, it was time for the band I wanted to see the most that night, Edmonton, Alberta’s own indomitable Heavy Metal beast STRIKER, bringing their absolute Ultrapower to the stage and drive all fans in the crowd mental with their electrifying concert. All songs from the setlist were killer, in special Best of the Best of the Best, Heart of Lies, Circle of Evil, Former Glory, and of course the metal hymn chosen to close their show, Phoenix Lights, and I only wish they had at least another 20 minutes to play a few more songs for us. Dan Cleary was phenomenal as usual on vocals, as well as his bandmates Tim Brown and John Simon Fallon on the guitars, Pete Klassen on bass, and Jonathan Webster on drums, proving why they’re one of the most precious gems of the current Canadian metal scene (and why they should be opening for Iron Maiden or Judas Priest instead of the always questionable choices by those bands). On a side note, I promised myself I wasn’t buying any merch that night, but as soon as I got there and saw their Beer Shark T-Shirt, I said “FUCK YOU, STRIKER!” Needless to say, here I am with another awesome black shirt added to my collection.

Another band I was eager to see live on Saturday were the Swedish guys from Heavy/Speed Metal machine ENFORCER, and let me tell you if you think they’re loud and heavy in the studio, they turn the volume up to 11 when they’re onstage. Having released the excellent Nostalgia in 2023 (which means it won’t take long now for those boys to bring a new album into being), the band formed of vocalist and guitarist Olof Wikstrand, guitarist Jonathan Nordwall, bassist Garth Condit (who looks a lot like a younger version of Mr. Adrian Smith), and drummer Jonas Wikstrand were relentless throughout their entire set, sometimes looking as if they were high on something (well, they were high on Heavy Metal, no doubt about that), melting our faces with thrilling, no shenanigans songs the likes of Destroyer, Unshackle Me, Take Me Out of This Nightmare, Midnight Vice, and even a really cool, vibrant cover version for Black Sabbath’s classic Die Young, and consequently igniting some sick mosh pits for our total delight. You can find their music on BandCamp and on Spotify, and definitely keep an eye on their tour dates because if there’s one thing those guys know how to do, that is to kick some serious ass live.

To be honest, after the breathtaking performances by Witherfall, Striker and Enforcer, Italy’s own Symphonic Power Metal force RHAPSODY OF FIRE had the almost impossible task of keeping up with that absurd level of energy and awesomeness. Well, let’s simply say they were not the headliners in vain, as the minute Giacomo Voli, Roby De Micheli, Alessandro Sala, Alex Staropoli and Paolo Marchesich hit the stage, The Garrison turned into a wild feast of hobbits, wizards, dragons, swords and undisputed heavy music. I always get confused with their historical name and lineup changes, which is why if you want to listen to their discography on Spotify there are two links, one for Rhapsody of Fire and one for Rhapsody only (and I guess there was even a time when they were called Rhapsody ov Fire, if I’m not mistaken), but that didn’t matter as their concert this Saturday night was beyond fantastic.

Blending songs from their 2024 album Challenge the Wind with their masterpiece Dawn of Victory, hence the long name of their tour, they provided us fans with a lecture in Symphonic Power Metal, with songs like Unholy Warcry, I’ll Be Your Hero, Challenge the Wind, and of course the timeless classics Dawn of Victory, Holy Thunderforce, and Emerald Sword (including an excellent wall of death, by the way) driving their diehard supporters crazy during the entire night. Even the not-so-fast moments, like when they played The Village of Dwarves (which reminds me a lot of the catchy “Bravely Bold Sir Robin”, from the iconic movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail), were great, and we must thank their ultra talented frontman Giacomo Voli for that. The guy not only has an incredible voice, but he certainly knows how to keep his audience engaged. For instance, I was going to leave early that night as I was a bit tired from the entire week, but I ended up staying until the last second in the battlefield with Rhapsody of Fire. Because that’s what good quality heavy music is all about and, as the band confirmed when their show was over, let’s have another magical party with them when they return in 2027 with the celebration of 30 years of their classic debut album Legendary Tales.

One of the heaviest, most violent bands in the history of Canadian metal is back in action, armed with an EP of shocking heft and horror, even by their earthshaking standards. Hailing from both Montreal and Quebec City, the unrelenting Brutal Death Metal horde known as NecroticGoreBeast will crush you like an insect to the sound of Brute, the follow-up to their 2023 critically acclaimed full-length album Repugnant. Recorded by Christopher Rannou-Poulin at Equilibrium Studio, mixed and mastered by Miguel Tereso at Demigod Recordings, and displaying a gruesome artwork by Andreas Christanetoff of Armaada Art, the new EP by vocalist John Mayer, guitarist Michael Chamberland, bassist Alexandre Brochu, and drummer JP Bouchard is highly recommended for fans of Cannibal Corpse, Devourment, Internal Bleeding, and Skinless, presenting a bludgeoning, tormenting overdose of  creeping viciousness juxtaposed with rampant aggression throughout its five unrelenting tracks.

The cinematic intro Brute works as the opening scene for a slasher flick, setting the tone for the savagery that’s about to begin in Assault of Severed Genitalia, featuring guest vocals by the awesome she-wolf Chaney Crabb of Entheos, making an infernal, demented vocal duet with John while Michael, Alexandre and JP bring absolute violence and heaviness to our putrid ears. Then the visceral riffage by Michael keeps peeling our flesh mercilessly in Sensual Regurgitation, accompanied by the rumbling bass by Alexandre, followed by Maggot Filled Colonoscopy, a charming name for another slab of sheer brutality by the quartet with the inhumane gnarls by John sending shivers down our spines. Finally, JP hammers his drums manically in a lesson in Brutal Death Metal made in Canada entitled Knuckle Deep Convulsions, inviting us all to slam into the pit while also ending the EP on a high and utterly brutish note.

Your days in the light are numbered thanks to another bestial opus by NecroticGoreBeast, who have proved yet again why they are untouchable in the field of extreme brutality. This Canadian brigade is ready to save rock music with the incendiary fusion of Crossover Thrash, Hardcore and Punk Rock found in their sophomore album.

Hailing from the charming Barrie, a city in Central Ontario, Canada, about 90 kilometers north of Toronto, the up-and-coming sonic brigade known as Spades GT is ready to save rock music with the incendiary fusion of Crossover Thrash, Hardcore and Punk Rock found in their new album, titled United. Produced by Kyle Marchant at Room 21 Sound in Toronto, the follow-up to their 2024 debut Sewer City Radio sees the band currently formed of John Pierce on vocals, Matt Voros and Dan Horton on the guitars, Sean Macnab on bass, and Tyler Reiner on drums on absolute fire, inspiring us all to slam into the pit to its eight hard-hitting compositions in a resonant exploration of connection and unity, examining diverse perspectives and scenarios from the deeply interpersonal to broader political landscapes.

The quintet wastes no time and kicks off their Rock N’ Roll party with Anthem, led by the pounding drums by Tyler and the classic, soaring vocals by John, not to mention how incendiary the riffs by Matt and Dan sound, followed by the electrifying title-track United, where the band unites the heaviness of metal music with the rebelliousness of Hardcore and Punk Rock, and the final result is perfect for some crazy mosh pit action. Tyler keeps hammering his drums in Demons, while Matt and Dan deliver an overdose of adrenaline through their stringed axes, and Filthy Lie is a song that’s more than perfect for hitting the road with your loved ones, for enjoying it while going skateboarding, and of course for showing the band your horns during their live concerts.

Game for Two then blends the sounds blasted by giants like Motörhead, The Exploited and Rancid, with Tyler taking the lead behind his drums in a frantic rock and punk extravaganza; whereas the last batch of songs features some very special guest musicians, starting with guest vocals by Andrew Moorehouse of The Fast Life in Wrecked, even faster than its predecessors. Needless to say, it should sound amazing if played live. Strong, featuring a rap verse by guest Julien “Mersinary” Santos of Reel Wolf, is another furious, heavy-as-hell tune by Spades GT, with the vocals by John exhaling sheer adrenaline, and lastly, featuring former second guitarist Jay Sarrazin, we have the flammable Die on Our Feet, closing the album on a high and vibrant Rock N’ Roll note.

John, Matt, Dan, Sean and Tyler are among us to save Rock N’ Roll, and the music found in their new album United proves they’re in the right path to reach their undisputed goal, combining hard-hitting riffs, driving rhythms, and compelling vocals to create a sound that’s both familiar and refreshingly contemporary. Album Review – Kratornas / God of the Tribes (2025)

This Canada-based Black Metal entity returns from the underworld with its highly anticipated fourth studio album, representing a significant shift in its approach by focusing on build-up and atmosphere.

Originally a three-piece band, but only for a short time in early 1995 when the project was still located in Cadiz, Western Visayas, in the Phillipines, the now Saskatchewan, Canada-based Black Metal creature Kratornas is set to unleash hell on earth with God of the Tribes, the fourth studio album in their career, and the follow-up to their 2016 opus Devoured by Damnation. Mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound, and displaying a striking artwork that perfectly complements the thematic elements of the record (drawing heavily from apocalyptic imagery and ritualistic concepts), the newborn spawn by the iconic Zachariah on vocals, guitars and bass, supported by GB Guzzarin on drums, is unlike any of the previous Kratornas releases known for their superfast brutality, representing a significant shift in their approach by focusing on build-up and atmosphere, therefore showcasing a significant evolution in their sound.

Zachariah’s devilish, Stygian feast begins in a beyond haunting manner in Cursed Sky Serpent, a 15-minute behemoth from the netherworld in the form of primeval Black Metal, sounding very experimental and dissonant until the very end while always supported by the wicked beats and fills by GB Guzzarin. Then after such a multi-layered aria, Zachariah offers us all the three-minute beast titled Evil and Plunder, where his guitar lines and bass sounding utterly demonic while also exploring new sounds and nuances. Ravaged by Hurakaan blends elements from Dissonant Death Metal to the project’s core sonority, with the beats and fills by GB Guzzarin enhancing the song’s insanity to a whole new level; whereas lastly we face another long and detailed song titled Novena para Guerra, and that’s when Zachariah truly thrives, blasting wicked guitar lines, metallic bass jabs and inhumane roars for our total delight.

“This album marks a turning point for Kratornas. Not because it tries to be ‘different’ but because it couldn’t have come out any other way. Every part of this release came together naturally. The sound, the pacing, the tension… it wrote itself, shaped by instinct and intention. This album is unlike the usual Kratornas so to anyone expecting it to sound like ‘early Kratornas’ will be disappointed,” commented the project’s heart and soul Zachariah, and if you have what it takes to face him and his Kratornas, you can find the project on Facebook, stream all of their sulfurous creations on Spotify, and of course grab a copy of God of the Tribes from BandCamp. But be warned that Kratornas is definitely not an easy listen for the average metalhead, it doesn’t matter if it’s the project’s more visceral old material, or if it’s the darkly atmospheric sounds found in the new album. Kratornas will forever bring forth a primeval form of Black Metal, darkening our thoughts and minds while at the same time preparing us all for our inevitable end.

Bringing fast and thrilling songs of battle and victory to our metal hearts since the already distant year of 2006, Toronto, Canada’s own Epic/Melodic Death/Power Metal warriors Crimson Shadows are finally back into the battlefield with their fusion of the guttural screams and blast beats of Death Metal with the epic up-tempo guitar harmonies and choruses of Power Metal in their brand new album, the magnificent Whispers of War. Mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson, and displaying a classy artwork by Péter Sallai of Mortpaintgraphics, showcasing a brave, dauntless warrior that perfectly depicts the sound of the band, the new album by frontman Jimi Maltais, guitarists Greg Rounding and Ryan Hofing, bassist Alex Snape, and drummer Cory Hofing is a worthy follow-up to their 2014 beast Kings Among Men, offering our avid ears an overdose of the band’s characteristic sound while also pointing to an even brighter future ahead of them.

Those Toronto warriors waste no time and kick off their metal music played at the speed of light party in Dawn of an Age, with Cory taking the lead with his crushing beats, and Jimi and Greg make a phenomenal vocal duo in Guardians, with it’s catchy-as-hell lyrics (“Guardians / We stand in a time of blood and fire / Ancient tales become our legacy / Skies ablaze, spirits of evil surrounding me / The prophecy remains our destiny”) inspiring us all to raise our fists and join them in a lecture in Melodic Death and Power Metal. Defenders of the Crown offers our avid ears more of their epic lyrics (“Here we stand to hold our ground / We defenders of the crown / Hold your steel and clench it tight / Or we all will die tonight”) in another classic battle hymn; and featuring the unparalleled Canadian growler Matt McGachy of Cryptopsy, Whispers of War is a fulminating metal attack by the boys sounding as fast as it is epic and aggressive, with Greg and Ryan firing truly piercing riffs nonstop, followed by Embrace the Fire, a little bit below the rest of the album but still fast, furious and presenting the band’s trademark sonority.

Then a smooth piano-driven intro quickly evolves into another shredding extravaganza by Greg and Ryan titled Battle Hard II: Battle Harder (the sequel to their 2012 song “Battle Hard”), while Jimi roars and growls with all of his strength and passion for heavy music. And featuring the indomitable Brittney Slayes (frontwoman for Canadian metal masters Unleash The Archers), who brings balance to the vocals together with Greg, we have Secrets of Our Time, not to mention Cory demolishes his drums in great fashion until the very last second. Jimi then sounds out of control, roaring manically in The Legacy of Steel, another headbanging beast where their riffs and solos exhale pure Heavy Metal magic, whereas lastly, the band will head into their final battle entitled Rise of the Fallen Soul, with Greg stealing the show with his awesome clean vocals while their Dragonforce-like guitar solos bring an extra onrush of electricity to their sound.

Crimson Shadows might have competed in and won the 2013 edition of Wacken Metal Battle Canada, and they absolutely deserved it, but in my humble opinion it’s now with Whispers of War that their trademark metallic, roaring sounds are ready to spread all over the world, positioning them as one of the forces to be reckoned with in the current Heavy Metal scene. This Canadian Death Metal quartet is finally storming back into the scene with their debut full album, digging you deep into the most gruesome slasher experience your deviated mind has ever experienced.

Sherbrooke, Quebec’s own Death Metal quartet Disembodiment is finally storming back into the most rancid and filthiest Death Metal scene with their debut full album Spiral Crypts, four years after their acclaimed EP Mutated Chaos, and it was definitely worth the wait. Recorded at the band’s own rehearsal space (vocals and guitars) and at Studio C (bass, drums and additional guitar tracks), mixed by the band’s own guitarist Christian, mastered by Carlo Altobelli at Toxic Basement, with a gory, sinister cover art by Slimeweaver (with additional artworks by draught__, and logo by the band’s drummer Eric), Spiral Crypts digs you deep into the worst and most gruesome slasher experience your deviated mind has ever experienced, all carefully brought into being by all four members of Canadian Death Metal band Oath Div. 666, those being Mathieu on vocals, Christian on the guitars, Carl on bass, and Eric on drums.

Like the soundtrack to a gory horror movie, the band will spread their metallic virus in Morbid Infestation, with Mathieu vomiting the song’s demented words accompanied by the caustic Death Metal riffs by Christian, followed by Stygian Overture, offering us all classic and gruesome Death Metal spearheaded by Eric’s unrelenting beats and fills, also presenting hints of Doom Metal to make things even more obscure. The title-track Spiral Crypts brings to our avid ears another round of heavy and visceral sounds by the band, with Christian’s riffage sounding truly vile; and Disembodiment then blasts a shorter Death Metal tune titled Putrification, with its three minutes bringing forward absolutely intense, unstoppable and thrilling violence.

Then a beyond cryptic, disturbing start gradually evolves into a massive wall of Death Metal thunder in Larval, slower than its predecessors yet just as pulverizing and grim, with Eric smashing his drums supported by Carl’s Stygian bass. Mathieu takes the lead once again with his deranged guttural in Infected To Rot, again delivering sheer insanity, with the low-tuned bass by Carl sending shivers down our spines; followed by Unknown Origins, two minutes of obscure, demonic sounds brought into being by those Canadian death metallers, before Sentient Inorganic Mess ends the album on a high note with the vile growls by Mathieu matching perfectly with Christian’s ruthless riffage.

In a nutshell, fans of the putrid, violent music blasted by some of the biggest names of the global Death Metal scene the likes of Incantation, Corpus Offal, Undergang, and Rottrevore will certainly enjoy what Disembodiment have to offer in Spiral Crypts, which is by the way available for purchase on BandCamp or via mailorder.
