Concert Review – Delain (The Axis Club, Toronto, ON, 03/20/2025)

Three of the best bands of the current Symphonic Rock and Metal scene worldwide beautifully warmed up the city of Toronto on a cold but fun night of first-class music.

OPENING ACTS: Edge of Paradise and Xandria

Despite the cold rain that fell over Toronto during most of the day this Thursday (after a warm and sunny Wednesday, by the way), the turnout at The Axis Club to see EDGE OF PARADISE, XANDRIA and DELAIN during their North American Tour 2025, another excellent event brought to the city by Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment, was amazing, with over 3/4 of the venue taken by metalheads eager for some Symphonic and Melodic Metal, plus of course some of the city’s best metal photographers like Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi. Not only that, now that pretty much all the snow has already melted, the time needed to get in and out of the city, as well as to find a parking spot, has improved considerably, allowing fans to get to the venue in time for all attractions. Doors opening at 6:30pm and the first show starting only at 7:15pm also helped a lot, giving people time to grab some merch and drinks before the shows started.

The first band to hit the stage was Los Angeles, California’s own Hard rock band EDGE OF PARADISE, spearheaded by the beyond stunning frontwoman Margarita Monet. They sounded absolutely amazing live, driving the energy level up and properly prepping all fans for the upcoming attractions. Having just released their sixth album Prophecy, the band played a few new songs as part of their setlist, including Prophecy Unbound, Death Note and Falling Light, and the crowd’s response to their new songs couldn’t have been better. This was not the first time the band played in Toronto, and definitely not the last, as I’m sure Maragarita and the boys will return to the city with their Rock N’ Roll attitude sooner than later, and who knows, maybe next time as headliners of their own tour.

Setlist

The Other Side of Fear
Hologram
Death Note
Falling Light
Give it to Me (Mind Assassin)
The Unknown

Band members

Dave Bates – lead guitar
David Ruiz – rhythm guitar

From all three bands playing Thursday night, Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany-based Symphonic Metal act XANDRIA is by far my favorite one, in special after the Greek goddess Ambre Vourvahis joined the band back in 2022, with their 2023 album The Wonders Still Awaiting and their 2024 EP Universal Tales being used as the base for their setlist. Songs like You Will Never Be Our God, Reborn and Universal sounded powerful onstage, plus of course the fan-favorite closing song Nightfall, proving they’re more than ready for a headlining spot in Toronto in the near future. As mentioned a few times in other reviews for Xandria, the band’s founder Marco Heubaum nailed it with their new lineup, with Ambre of course being the icing on the cake in their recent “rebirth”, and that translates into sheer admiration, screams and horns high in the air every time they hit the stages of Toronto. The volume of the vocals during the entire night for all three bands, not only for Xandria, was a hit and miss mainly due to their high range, but nothing that would make any of the shows less enjoyable, and of course Ambre killed it as usual for our total delight.

Setlist
You Will Never Be Our God
Reborn

Marco Heubaum – guitars, keyboards, programming, backing vocals

DELAIN

Diana Leah had big shoes to fill back in 2022 as the replacement of the iconic vocalist Charlotte Wessels for Dutch Symphonic Metal/Rock band DELAIN, but after seeing her live this Thursday in Toronto I must say the Romanian kicks some serious ass and the band was spot-on in choosing her as their new frontwoman. The drumming by Sander Zoer and the grinding riffs and solos by Ronald Landa also sounded fantastic during the entire night, while Diana sounded superb on both new songs like The Reaping and Dance With the Devil, from their new EP Dance With the Devil, and old songs such as April Rain, Not Enough and We Are the Others. The lighting was also on point the entire night for all bands, and in the case of Delain that only made their show even more special for their fans. Just like what happened with Edge of Paradise and Xandria, I’m beyond certain we’ll see Delain again in Canadian lands sooner than later based on the smiles on their own faces and on the faces of all fans at the venue, proving Symphonic Metal indeed has its place in the heart of Torontonian metalheads.

Album Review – Lordi / Limited Deadition (2025)

Paying homage to the 80’s toy culture, Mr. Lordi and his crew of unstoppable monsters return to action with another electrifying album of heavy music.

Displaying a unique blend of nostalgia and Heavy Metal creativity, embodying the spirit of a true limited edition, Limited Deadition, the brand new album by Finnish Heavy Metal/Hard Rock monsters Lordi, pays homage to the 80’s toy culture, a theme deeply resonant with frontman Mr. Lordi, a lifelong collector of action figures and other memorabilia. Recorded in Helsinki at IluSound Studio and Finnvox Studios, with Mr. Lordi taking on production duties, mixed by Ilkka Herkman, and mastered by Pauli Saastamoinen, the album’s concept aligns seamlessly with the band’s penchant for clever wordplay and thematic innovation, making it an essential addition to any fan’s collection while again showcasing all the talent and passion for our beloved Rock N’  Roll by the aforementioned Mr. Lordi alongside Kone on the guitars, Hiisi on bass, Hella on keyboards, and Mana on drums.

SCG XIX The Hexecutioners is a classic intro like in all Lordi albums, prepping us all for their monster attack in Legends Are Made Of Clichés, sounding extremely 80’s thanks to the classic keys by Hella and the Rock N’ Roll riffs by Kone. Mr. Lordi’s raspy, devilish vocals match perfectly with the futuristic keys by Hella in Syntax Terror, an exciting Hard Rock tune that will work really well live, whereas slowing things down while investing in an AOR vibe we have Skelephant In The Room, led by the classic beats by Mana. Then after the brief interlude SCGTV Saturday Night Main Event we face Killharmonic Orchestra, offering a more Heavy Metal-inspired sonority thanks to the riffs by Kone and the rumbling bass by Hiisi, whereas Collectable presents a melancholic start to the piano by Hella, evolving into a decent ballad with a striking solo by Kone.

Then after the fun interlude SCGTV Monstersquad Action Figures it’s time to hit the dance floor with Lordi in Fangoria, where the bass by Hiisi will send shivers down your spine while Hella continues to shine with her Hard Rock/AOR-infused keys. Mr. Lordi’s vocals and Kona’s riffs kick off the also 80’s-inspired Hellizabeth, keeping the album at a high dancing level. SCGTV The Hexecutioners Season Finale is perhaps the coolest of all interludes, followed by the classic rock tune Retropolis, showcasing a solid guitar work by Kone, in special another one of his fiery solos, and the always ass-kicking vocals by Mr. Lordi. Hella’s classy piano notes ignite another ballad entitled Frighteousness, which evolves into an AOR feast that’s just average; and after a word from their “sponsors” in SCGTV Crazeee Ralph Promo, it’s time for the title-track Limited Deadition, again showcasing a great balance between heavy riffs and whimsical keys while Mana dictates the pace with his spot-on beats and fills. Then ending the album we have the cowbell-infused rockin’ tune You Might Be Deceased, with Mr. Lordi’s striking, visceral vocals being nicely supported by his bandmates classic backing vocals.

“The album topic of 80’s toys is actually just a loose theme, but it’s been with me since I was little. I’ve always been a collector of various things, and I’m even some kind of a hoarder. I can’t even remember what my first toy was, but my obsession basically started with ‘Muppet Show’ dolls, followed by ‘Star Wars’ and ‘E.T.’ figures, with the latter actually being my favorite movie of all time,” commented Mr. Lordi, and you can feel his obsession with those collectibles by purchasing your favorite version of the album by clicking HERE, therefore also feeding your heavy music collector’s hunger. don’t forget to also follow those beautiful creatures on Facebook and on Instagram, keeping updated with all of their tour dates, to subscribe to their YouTube channel, and to stream all of their creepy creations on Spotify. For those ready to dive into this monstrous adventure, Limited Deadition is not just an album, but a celebration of Lordi’s unparalleled creativity and enduring legacy, making us eager for more of their monster-infused music in a not-so-distant year.

Concert review – H.E.A.T (Tavastia-klubi, Helsinki, FIN, 02/18/2025)

An electrifying night of hard rock mastery, where Sweden meets Finland in a fiery performance that left the audience breathless.

OPENING ACT: Temple Balls

Swedish hard rock powerhouse H.E.A.T made a triumphant return to Finland at the iconic Tavastia delivering an electrifying performance that left fans exhilarated. With their new album, Welcome to the Future, set to drop in April, the band proved once again why they are one of the most celebrated acts in the modern hard rock scene. Before the main act, Finnish rockers Temple Balls warmed up the crowd with their high-energy sound. Hailing from Oulu, the band has been making waves by opening for industry legends such as Sonata Arctica and Bruce Dickinson. Promoting their latest album, Avalanche (2023), they set the tone for an unforgettable night.

From the moment the band took the stage, it was clear they were on a mission to captivate the audience. Their setlist was a well-balanced mix of fan favorites: songs like “Lonely Stranger” and “Dead Weight” showcased their signature anthemic choruses and driving guitar work, while “Trap” and “Bad Bad Bad” got the audience singing along. Closing with “Thunder From the North”, Temple Balls left no doubt that they are more than ready to conquer bigger stages everywhere.

H.E.A.T
The anticipation in Tavastia was palpable as the lights dimmed and Glenn Frey’s “The Heat Is On” played through the speakers. The Swedish rockers hit the stage with “Disaster”, one of the two brand-new songs from their upcoming album, instantly igniting the crowd. Vocalist Kenny Leckremo commanded the stage with his amazing vocals and infectious energy, while Dave Dalone’s fiery guitar solos kept the adrenaline pumping. The setlist was a well-curated journey through their discography, featuring powerful renditions of “Emergency”, “Dangerous Ground”, and “Hollywood”.

One of the standout moments came during “Beg Beg Beg”, where the band seamlessly incorporated a snippet of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” – a nod to rock legends of the past. Midway through the show, the anthem “Living on the Run” had fans singing at the top of their lungs. The band couldn’t hide the joy of being there, specially Kenny who said a few times how they like to play in Finland and how excited they were to show the new songs, introducing the yet-to-be-released “Bad Time for Love”. Always with high energy, the band made the fans incredibly happy with classics such as “1000 Miles” and “One by One”, before the grand finale with “Tearing Down the Walls”. H.E.A.T’s performance was a masterclass in modern hard rock: passionate, explosive, and engaging from start to finish. With Welcome to the Future on the horizon, this show served as a powerful reminder that the band remains at the forefront of the genre. The very next day, Finnish fans were surprised by the announcement that H.E.A.T will play at Rockfest in Turku this summer. And if they bring their tour to your city, don’t miss out the opportunity to have the best of times with their high-voltage performance!

Album Review – Thundermother / Dirty & Divine (2025)

These four Swedish girls are back in action armed with their brand new, blistering onslaught of loud, addictive Hard Rock.

Having already demonstrated their outstanding artistic potential many times over, Sweden’s own all-female Hard Rock brigade Thundermother has completed work on their new album, beautifully titled Dirty & Divine, the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2022 album Black & Gold, and is primed to detonate anew armed with a new selection of rock anthems highly recommended for admirers of the genre. Currently formed of Linnea Vikström Egg on vocals, Filippa Nässil on the guitar, Majsan Lindberg on bass, and Joan Massing on drums, the band continues to establish themselves as one of the most vivacious and vital Hard Rock bands around with Dirty & Divine, always with a never-say-die spirit and collective charisma that underpins everything they do.

It’s a new era for Thundermother, and the girls arrive in style in So Close, blending the smoothness of Rock N’ Roll with their trademark edgier Hard Rock vibe, not to mention Linnea sounds amazing on vocals. Can’t Put Out The Fire sounds even more exciting than the opening tune, with Filippa kicking ass on the guitar while Majsan and Joan deliver a more-than-vibrant kitchen, followed by Speaking of the Devil, one of the first singles released, which will sound fantastic during their live concerts and with Linnea’s vocals burning our hearts mercilessly. Feeling Alright is a bit generic compared to the other songs, albeit still presenting the band’s characteristic rockin’ sounds; whereas back to a more electrifying and fun mode we have Take The Power, a Rock N’ Roll party by those unstoppable ladies, with Linnea once again kicking some serious ass with her powerful, soaring vocals.

I Left My License in the Future presents an interesting Judas Priest vibe, blending the sonority of Turbo Lover with You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’, and of course the final result is a lesson in heavy music, while Dead Or Alive also showcases a cool, melodic sound boosted by a fun official video, with Filippa delivering those minimalist but extremely captivating riffs nonstop. Then investing in a strong Southern Rock sonority they offer us all Can You Feel It, with Joan blasting her AC/DC-inspired beats while Filippa is on fire with her riffs and solos; and Bright Eyes keeps the atmosphere vibrant and fresh, with their solid guitar lines and classic beats offering Linnea the perfect base for her striking vocals. Lastly, as those girls are never tired of blasting pure Rock N’ Roll for our total delight, we’re treated to American Adrenaline, putting a dancing conclusion to the album and making us eager for their new setlists with songs like this one in their upcoming live performances.

A blistering onslaught of loud, addictive Hard Rock, Dirty & Divine marks the start of a new age for Thundermother, or in other words, those girls are revved up and ready to rock, and you can join them on Facebook and on Instagram in their quest for Rock N’ Roll, stream their music on Spotify, and purchase a copy of their striking new album from the AFM Records webstore. “We fight for Rock N’ Roll” is the motto Thundermother live by all day, every day, and the music found in Dirty & Divine proves that’s more than just a motto for them, but a way of life, also representing a new start for a band that will surely keep kicking our asses for many decades with their undisputed music.

Album Review – WarWolf / The Final Battle (2025)

Let the battle commence to the sound of the striking third studio album by this German Heavy Metal brigade.

Having emerged from the ashes of a band named Wolven back in 2021, Cologne, Germany-based Heavy Metal brigade WarWolf is back for the attack with their third studio album, titled The Final Battle, the follow-up to their 2023 opus The Apocalyptic Waltz. Produced, mixed and mastered once again by Grave Digger’s own  mastermind Chris Boltendahl at Graveyard Studio, the new album by frontman Andreas von Lipinski, guitarists Frank Noras and Peter Müller, bassist Florian Abegg and drummer Holger Bloempott offers exactly what a fan would expect from the band and even more, showcasing “Maiden-esque” influences with a slight Teutonic Metal touch, but this time rawer and more honest then ever.

The opener Eye of the Storm is simply fast, furious, striking, and showcases metallic lyrics for our total delight (“In the heart of chaos / Where tempests collide / Beneath the shadowed clouds / Where fears reside / An eye of the storm / A glimpse into the night / Where wars unfold / And souls take flight”), followed by Burning Skies, another slab of old school Heavy Metal where Frank’s soaring vocals are nicely boosted by all backing vocals. In The Lycan Empire, the title of the song matches perfectly with not only the band’s name but also with their traditional Heavy and Power Metal sound, whereas Fight the Invaders is not a very exciting song, not to mention it’s a long one too, despite the solid job done by Frank and Peter on the guitars. A New Hope presents a much more exciting sonority led by the galloping bass and drums by Florian and Holger, sounding very Iron Maiden-ish in the end.

Andreas continues to lead his bandmates with his soaring vocals in Time Stands Still, offering more of the band’s classic Teutonic Heavy Metal, with their riffs sounding sharp and vibrant; whereas serene guitar lines kick off the seven-minute aria The Dark Emperor, an ode to the NWOBHM with a German twist, led by the classic drumming by Holger, flowing into the headbanging tune Blood & Ice, a beautiful fusion of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock where the guitars by Frank and Peter are spitting fire. The second to last track of the album is a full-bodied, detailed nine-minute tune titled The Final Battle, starting in a serene acoustic manner, and alternating between heavier moments and deep introspective passages; and as the battle seems to be finally reaching its end, the band offers a soothing ballad titled The War Is Over, overflowing melancholy and grief.

In addition to all that, all songs have a continuous story so The Final Battle can be called a concept album, though each song can also stand on its own, and you can experience that metallic adventure by WarWolf by purchasing a copy of the album or streaming it as many times as you want by clicking HERE or HERE. You can also start following the band on Facebook and on Instagram, staying up to date with all things WarWolf (including their tour dates, like their upcoming European tour alongside the mighty Grave Digger), and stream their awesome music on any streaming platform like Spotify. Because the battle rages on, and the Teutonic beast WarWolf is definitely ready to fight by our side armed with their new album of undisputed, classic Heavy Metal.

Concert Review – Wacken Metal Battle Toronto Round #1 (Hard Luck Bar, Toronto, ON, 01/25/2025)

The iconic Hard Luck Bar in Toronto became a “metal ring” where four brave bands started wrestling for the undisputed prize of playing at the greatest metal festival in the world this summer.

INTRODUCTION: ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE?

It was time to set this bitterly cold winter on fire in Toronto this Saturday with this year’s edition of Wacken Metal Battle Canada, starting with Wacken Metal Battle Toronto Round #1 with the bands PURVEYOR OF CHAOS, UNKLE SKURVEY, ISCHEMIC and PILLARS OF AUTUMN at Hard Luck Bar, the first step for each one of those four bands to win the coveted slot at Wacken Open Air taking place from July 30 to August 2 this year in Wacken, Germany, plus $1,000 CAD towards expenses, and VIP camping at the festival. Not only that, they also have the opportunity to win monetary and gear prizes at the international Wacken Metal Battle. Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were there to cover such an important night for the underground metal scene in Toronto, and of course enjoy the music by those four amazing bands.

As a matter of fact, this year I was invited by the one and only JJ Tartaglia, responsible for Wacken Metal Battle Canada, and the vocalist and drummer for Heavy Metal/Hard Rock band Thunderor, to be one of the guest judges alongside Claus Nader (Futhark Records), Andrew Craig (Zombitrol Productions) and Ryan Hofing (Crimson Shadows). It was a true honor being chosen to evaluate the future of heavy music in Toronto, and I hope I did a good job to the point I get invited to this unique event more times this year and in all future editions of Wacken Metal Battle Canada. Having said all that, are you ready to rumble?

PURVEYOR OF CHAOS

The first band of the night was Heavy Metal/Hard Rock quartet PURVEYOR OF CHAOS, who hit the stage at 9pm armed with their heavy riffs and the soaring vocals by frontman Maxel Black. Playing songs form their 2022 self-titled album, which is by the way available on BandCamp and on Spotify, the band did a good job onstage and put everyone to bang their heads and raise their horns in the name of classic heavy music, and I’m sure if they refine their sound a bit, maybe by adding a second guitarist to their lineup and making the sound of their drums clearer, they’ll have a much better overall performance during their future live shows.

Band members
Maxel Black – vocals
Bulldog Bess Ross – guitars
Tenbears – bass
Fast Eddie – drums

UNKLE SKURVEY

Right after a quick break, Heavy Metal/Hardcore outfit UNKLE SKURVEY delivered a fun and vibrant performance to a very decent crowd at Hard Luck Bar, sometimes sounding like a Thrash Metal band, sometimes like a System of a Down cover band, which was a bit confusing but in the end worked relatively well. The songs Covid Mosh, World War 3, and Next Generation, all available on Spotify, sounded great live, with frontman Ché Cleland’s energy and facial expressions adding an extra touch of insanity to their show. I personally think if they focus on the sound from the song Next Generation in their future releases, and add a second guitarist to the band, they’ll definitely go places.

Band members
Ché Cleland – vocals
Doug Noel – guitars
Stephen ‘Stiv’ Scott – bass
Sean Mollison – drums

ISCHEMIC

The third band of the night was most definitely the heaviest of all, blasting a dark and deep fusion of Blackened Death and Doom Metal not recommended for the lighthearted. I’m talking about the five-headed beast known by the name of ISCHEMIC, spearheaded by the talented growler Isabelle Tazbir, who melted our faces with their undisputed heaviness and obscurity. Having released the album Condemned to the Breaking Wheel in 2024, which you can purchase or stream on BandCamp and on Spotify, their performance was beyond fantastic, proving Isabelle and her henchmen are more than ready for bigger stages worldwide.

Band members
Isabelle Tazbir – vocals
Adam Korchok – guitars
Jon Radic – guitars
Lyndon Quadros – bass
Mrudul Kamble – drums

PILLARS OF AUTUMN

Last but certainly not least, it was time for Technical/Symphonic Deathcore act PILLARS OF AUTUMN to deliver a massive, electrifying, technical and very professional performance to the crowd at Hard Luck Bar, with all songs, in special their new single Crestfallen Emissary, sounding amazing live. I highly recommend you go check their music out on BandCamp and on Spotify, paying very good attention to the demented fry screams by Nick Young and the insane bass lines by Kevin Chan Kin Fung, as those two guys sounded brilliant during their set this Saturday night in Toronto.

Band members
Nick Young – vocals
Devon Groat – guitars
Carl Pike – guitars
Kevin Chan Kin Fung – bass
Doug Noel – drums

AND THE WINNER IS…

…the Blackened Death and Doom Metal creature ISCHEMIC! Congratulations for the win! They now move on to the Ontario Final on March 21 at Rivoli in Toronto, and if you want to know more about the whole competition, the next rounds across Canada and so on go to the official Facebook page of Wacken Metal Battle Canada. Also, thanks to all media partners and promoters, including Bravewords.com, Metal-Rules.com, Metal Devastation Radio, Boonsdale Records, Asher Media Relations, and many others, for keeping the fires of underground music in Canada burning brighter than a thousand suns. I’m sure Ischemic will have another killer performance during the Ontario Final in March, and who knows, maybe they’ll be the ones to “rule them all” and venture through the sacred lands of Wacken Open Air in Germany this summer, proudly representing Canada at the greatest stage of all.

The Year In Review – Top 10 Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Albums of 2024

“Fans still compare me to Bruce Dickinson. I have people coming up to me and saying, Don’t you know that could’ve been you? And I tell them, That was me! I just didn’t want it..” – Paul Di’Anno

It’s hard to put into words the loss of our beloved Paul Andrews (17 May 1958 – 21 October 2024), better known by his stage name Paul Di’Anno, one of the most iconic musicians in the history of heavy music, helping Iron Maiden be what they’re today by giving that edgier vibe to the albums Iron Maiden and Killers, therefore influencing all future generations of musicians not only in Heavy Metal, but also in Punk Rock and Rock N’ Roll. He was a legend and will be sorely missed by anyone who loves good music. There’s not much we can do at The Headbanging Moose to honor his life and work, but we’ll keep celebrating heavy music in his name for as long as we can. I wish he could have played one final show in Toronto so Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I could have registered such a unique moment in the city, but unfortunately time is not always in our favor. Anyway, it might be a very sad year to the metal community worldwide with an irreplaceable loss like that, but heavy music lives on, and that’s why here we have once again The Headbanging Moose’s Top 10 Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Albums of 2024, excluding EP’s, best of’s and live albums, to keep the spirit alive and keep raising our horns to countless metal musicians like our great Paul Di’Anno.

Concert Review – W.A.S.P. (History, Toronto, ON, 11/11/2024)

Countless fans in Toronto had the pleasure of witnessing a once in a lifetime explosion of classic Heavy Metal and Hard Rock by one of the most iconic bands of all time.

OPENING ACT: Armored Saint

If you love first-class live music played to perfection, then you must join W.A.S.P., with support of ARMORED SAINT, during their Album One Alive World Tour 2024, just like what happened at the beyond excellent History this Monday night in Toronto. Seriously, both bands were absolutely flawless during their incendiary shows, and of course Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were there to witness those giants (as the word “dinosaurs” seems a bit to old for them) of heavy music. It was quite chilly in Toronto, and of course really dark, but that didn’t stop countless lovers of our good old Rock N’ Roll to take the venue by storm on the worst day of the week for anything, and to have a great time together with the bands.

Precisely at 8pm, Los Angeles, California’s own Heavy Metal/Hard Rock juggernaut ARMORED SAINT kicked off their electrifying, classic and perfect performance in Toronto, blending old school songs the likes of Can U Deliver and Reign of Fire with a new tune from their 2020 album Punching the Sky, the excellent End of the Attention Span. John Bush was phenomenal as usual, delivering his striking vocals for the delight of the crowd, and even getting down to the floor section to sing one of the songs close to the soundboard. Seriously, his voice hasn’t aged at all. What a vocalist! And what to say about Joey Vera on bass, or the Sandoval Brothers? In other words, if you’ve never seen Armored Saint live, don’t miss the chance because those guys are simply superb on stage.

W.A.S.P.

After a short break (where I desperately went for a pizza, as I was starving), it was time for one of the most iconic bands to ever arise from Los Angeles, California, Heavy Metal/Hard Rock legends W.A.S.P., to melt our faces with one of the most hypnotizing performances of the year in Toronto. Blackie Lawless (or maybe I should call him “Blackie Flawless” after Monday), Doug Blair, Mike Duda and Aquiles Priester took no prisoners in their quest for old school heavy music, kicking some serious ass with the full play of their 1984 self-titled cult album (referred to as “Album One” by Blackie himself), plus a bunch of other classics during the encore.

Blackie even mentioned that when they started thinking about playing the whole album on this tour, one of the managers he consulted with said the idea was terrific, but only if they played all songs in the same order of the album. Blackie said that was insane as they had never opened a W.A.S.P. show with I Wanna Be Somebody, but in the end that’s exactly what they did, and the fans in Toronto embraced the whole idea with tons of love, respect and admiration for Blackie and his crew. It was a “once in a lifetime” concert for everyone at History, as Blackie said they’ll never do that again, and song after song you could see the joy and energy flowing from fans of all ages. I mean, who can stand still and not start dancing and headbanging to On Your Knees or Tormentor, right?

The background of the stage was also a thing of beauty, playing the official videos of all songs being played live by the band, connecting their past, present and future in a compelling way, and of course things only got rowdier and more fun during the encore with songs like I Don’t Need No Doctor, Wild Child and Blind in Texas inspiring all of their Torontonian fans to sing along the lyrics with Blackie. As already said, this was a unique opportunity to see the band playing their debut album live from start to finish, and I guess none of the fans at History this Monday night will ever forget the awesome experience of witnessing that blast of classic rock and metal live by one of the most important bands in the history of music. Who knows, maybe we’ll see them playing other albums in full in the future, but until then I’m sure Toronto will keep the electricity of such a stunning live rendition of “Album One” flowing through their veins.

Album Review – Unwanted Guest / Bonedead (2024)

Guitarist Dave Fox and his Unwanted Guest return with another round of first-class rock and metal music, a true labour of love reflecting his personal and musical journey thus far.

The multi-talented Sheffield, England-based Dave Fox, lead guitarist of UK’s own Heavy Metal band Seventh Son, has recently re-emerged from the old school metal scene with a fresh take on 90’s Hard Rock, Progressive and Alternative Metal under the moniker Unwanted Guest, releasing in 2022 his critically acclaimed debut solo album Grave Metallum, which climbed to number 10 on the Amazon New Release Metal Charts. Following his successful debut, Dave has devoted nearly two years and 1,000 hours to writing, recording, and producing 12 new tracks for the second Unwanted Guest album, entitled Bonedead, a true labour of love reflecting his personal and musical journey thus far. On his new album, Dave once again performs all vocals and instrumental duties, showcasing his versatility as a seasoned rock guitarist and producer, giving the whole album a very personal and honest vibe.

Bonedead begins with Mary Had a Little Lamb, which according to Dave himself “is a very personal song lyrically and discusses the degeneration of elder family members. For some people, death is more preferable than being kept alive and suffering.” Musically speaking, it’s an exciting rockin’ tune where Dave slashes his guitar mercilessly while delivering melodious vocal lines, followed by Six Degrees of Saturation, exploring the concept of an abandoned playlist, sat on someone’s device, that may contain a masterpiece that no one will ever hear. “It is destined to remain digital dust, even more so when millions of bands are uploading song after song each day – most of which fall by the wayside – hardly ever being heard. What chance do these small artists ever have?”, said Dave, delivering another blast of modern-day Hard Rock showcasing classic riffs, bass lines and pounding drums. Then eerie background sounds add a welcome dose of insanity to The Alchemist, sounding like a Rock N’ Roll version of Deep Purple; and Dave enhances the heaviness of his riffs in Dead End, blasting a great fusion of Alternative Rock and Metal with classic Hard Rock in the vein of Velvet Revolver. It’s then time for Dave to invest in a more melodic vibe in the ballad Beneath the Broken Shell, with hints of Southern Rock in its riffs and beats; whereas Imposter Syndrome, a behavioral health phenomenon described as self-doubt of intellect, skills, or accomplishments among high-achieving individuals, offers tons of groove flowing from the bass guitar while all riffs and keys bring endless electricity to the music.

The second half of the album starts in a Velvet Revolver/Alter Bridge vibe with I’m Just a Guy, where Dave showcases all his passion for the riff while his vocals also sound as striking and melodic as they can be, followed by Show Yourself, another banger by Dave and his Unwanted Guest perfect for hitting the highway or simply enjoy it at home while having a cold beer, with the whole song exhaling pure Rock N’ Roll, in special Dave’s stylish riffs. He definitely knows how to blend classic rock music with the modern sound of the 90’s and 2000’s, which is exactly what we’ll get in Kindred State of Mind, flowing into the also rockin’ tune Future Skeleton, where he fires his classic riffs and beats from start to finish. It’s not amongst the strongest songs of the album, but it’s still very enjoyable, of course. His guitar lines sound heavier and more piercing in Funeral in My Brain, again nicely complementing his bass and drums, therefore supporting his vocal lines in great fashion; and lastly, it’s pedal to the metal in the flammable extravaganza titled Wrap Me Up, a striking conclusion to an album that reeks of our beloved Rock N’ Roll.

Bonedead can be appreciated in its entirety on Spotify, and you can also grab a copy of it from the project’s own BandCamp page, keeping Mr. Dave Fox very happy and motivated to continue his rockin’ journey and to bring to our avid ears more of his classy creations. You can also start following him on Facebook for news and other nice-to-know information about his Unwanted Guest, and also subscribe to his YouTube channel for more of his music. Both his debut Grave Metallum and his newborn spawn Bonedead are excellent albums that certainly deserve a listen by anyone who loves rock and metal music, and as mentioned, the more personal the albums by Dave and his Unwanted Guest sound and feel, the more thrilling his musical creations will be for all of us, proving again there’s nothing better than rock and metal music that is true to the heart as the soundtrack to our lives.

Album Review – Various Artists / Surrender to Death: A History of the Atlanta Metal Underground Vol. 1 (2024)

Get ready for a night of fierce metallic sounds born in sweaty nightclubs, packed house parties, and DIY warehouse shows, a retrospective of the Atlanta metal underground from 1982 to 1999.

Deep from the vaults, Boris Records and Deanwell Global Music are unleashing the vinyl and digital versions of Surrender to Death: A History of the Atlanta Metal Underground Vol. 1, a retrospective of the Atlanta metal underground from 1982 to 1999. Spanning two decades of local bands, studio projects, and touring heavyweights, Surrender to Death showcases over 20 bands, ranging from the early days of traditional Heavy Metal to gory basement Death Metal to second-wave Black Metal, far from the better-known scenes in the Bay Area and New York and Florida. Over half a decade in the making, featuring original recordings sourced directly from the bands  (with all tracks remastered from various sources by Jessica Thompson Audio), and displaying a sick artwork by Brian Warner (aka Esayde or Total Weirdoh), this ass-kicking compilation will give you a glimpse of the Atlanta metal scene’s depth and its awesome and sometimes truly bizarre takes on the genre and all of its sub-genres.

Side A of the first vinyl starts way back in 1982 with Strangers, the opening track of the self-titled album by Messendger, presenting a great fusion of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock where the trio delivers fierce riffs and beats, and with their vocal lines also sounding electrifying; followed by Lucifers Eyes, by Fortnox, another beast from 1982 offering us all a powerful blast of old school Hard Rock. Fast forward a few years to 1990 and we face the Power/Thrash Metal by Atlanta’s own Ghost Story, with the song What Few Even Dare, from their 1990 demo The Image and the Reality, also presenting hints of Death and Speed Metal in its riffs and drums, whereas in 1988 a Thrash Metal band form Georgia called Necropolis released the album Contemplating Slaughter, and from that album we have the song Waters of Lathe, showcasing the amazing raspy vocals by Keith Charron.

It’s time to kick off side B of vinyl number one with Rock You, by MX, another old Heavy Metal/Hard Rock outfit from Georgia from the early 80’s, delivering sheer adrenaline and electricity through their fiery riffs and unrelenting attitude, and let’s continue our journey though the 80’s with Sinister Angel and the song Street Light Glamour, from their 1984 self-titled EP, where you can sense elements from early Judas Priest in their sound as well as harsher thrash and death nuances. Then in 1991 the Augusta, Georgia-based Heavy/Power Metal band Legion released the album Darkness, and from that album comes Evil Mind, with a sensational vocal performance by Loy Mitcham, followed by Reflected Fear, by Kinetic Dissent, more inclined to classic Thrash Metal, a song from their 1987 demo The Fall of Individualism, bringing forward an amazing guitar work by Stephen Danyo. In the song Til Death Do Us Part, from the 1989 demo Overloaded, by Dark Overlord, the music exhales the same rebelliousness from the early days of Exodus, or in other words, it’s a fantastic option to slam into the pit like a true metalhead, while Metal Merchants, from the 1985 cult album Tales of Terror, by Hallows Eve, is an explosion of Thrash and Speed Metal led by frontman Stacy Andersen, also perfect for some sick mosh pits.

Unblessed, one of the first Death Metal bands from Georgia, kicks off side A of the second vinyl with When it Bleeds it Pours, from their 1998 demo, already blasting that harsh, vicious sound that became a staple in today’s Death Metal scene, whereas Sixteenth Chamber, released in the 1995 demo Oh Come All Ye Faithful… Tonight We Feast, by Lestregus Nosferatus, presents those truly evil vocals we love in extreme music, not to mention the heaviness of their riffs. We’re then treated to Pray to Death, by ROT, from the 1990 demo Diabolus (The Unholy Rot), offering our putrid ears more of Atlanta’s own blend of classic Death Metal to inspire us all for some vigorous headbanging, followed by Avulsion with the song Inexorable Suffering, from their 1994 demo of the same name, enhancing the city’s ferocity in the scene, sounding slow, evil and, therefore, definitely not recommended for the lighthearted. Gates Of Emptiness, from the 1997 demo Twilight Eternal, by Dawn of Orion, is an overdose of classic Death Metal, with the harsh vociferations by Myke Jamison sounding insane, and things get even darker in Metaphorical Ithaca, by Haborym (a Hebrew synonym for Satan), mixing Black and Death Metal in an utterly demonic chant from their only demo released in 1995.

Finally, side B of the second vinyl brings to us all The Righteous Shall Fall, by Tragic Demise, displaying one of the most primeval sounds of the entire compilation, sounding like creatures arising form the pits of the underworld while again showcasing classic Death Metal beats for our total delight. Then the band Demoncy blasts a more Black Metal-inspired sound in Winter Bliss, from their 1999 album Joined in Darkness, with their Stygian, cryptic harsh vocals and a beyond raw sound quality giving it a more-than-infernal vibe. Necroflesh then offers a brutal slab of old school Death Metal in Scream, from their 1997 demo, where their guitars sound as caustic and sharp as possible; followed by the song Synthesis of Rebirth, taken from the 1996 demo of the same name by Procostimus, another band blending Death and Black Metal in their music where Greg King shows no mercy for our souls with his grim vocals and drums. Darkened Skies, the second band deeply rooted in old school Black Metal, delivers their share of obscurity and evil to the masses like a creature lurking in the dark in Reign of Radulescu, before Vastion, one of the first Technical Death Metal bands from Atlanta, crushes us all like insects in Ensuring Your Death, from their 2000 album Closed Eyes to Nothing, sounding absolutely wild and bestial until the very last second.

Part of “Georgia Historical Metal Archive Series” by Deanwell Global Music and volume 2 of “Atlanta Metal Underground Archive Series” by Boris Records, Surrender to Death can be described as a night of fierce metallic sounds born in sweaty nightclubs, packed house parties, and DIY warehouse shows, and you can experience all those decades of first-class music made in Atlanta by purchasing a copy of the album from the Boris Records’ BandCamp page, from Deanwell Global Music’s BandCamp page, or by clicking HERE, and let me tell you the package that those guys put together is brilliant, including the double-vinyl (available in four different color options) with a gatefold jacket, an 11×17 double-sided insert containing bios and photos of each band, a sticker, random repro band flyers, and an 18×24 full color poster. This is heavy music, this is Atlanta, and I honestly can’t wait for the next volume in this beautiful tribute to one of the most prolific scenes of the North American underground.

Best moments of the album: Kinetic Dissent – Reflected Fear, Dark Overlord – Til Death Do Us Part, Dawn of Orion – Gates Of Emptiness, Procostimus – Synthesis of Rebirth and Vastion – Ensuring Your Death.

Worst moments of the album: None.
