Album Review – Battle Beast / Steelbound (2025)

Finland’s own Heavy Metal powerhouse storms forward with unrelenting force armed with their seventh studio album, moving fluently between classic metal, superpowered synthesizers, and symphonic realms.

Three years after the critically acclaimed Circus of Doom, Finnish Heavy/Power Metal/Hard Rock powerhouse Battle Beast storms forward with unrelenting force, dropping their electrifying, highly anticipated seventh studio album, entitled Steelbound. Produced and mixed by Janne Björkroth at JKB Studios, and mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios, the new opus by the indomitable frontwoman Noora Louhimo, guitarists Joona Björkroth and Juuso Soinio, bassist Eero Sipilä, keyboardist Janne Björkroth, and drummer Pyry Vikki moves fluently between classic metal, superpowered synthesizers, and symphonic realms, even embracing ’80s-tinged Hard Rock, resulting in a musical palette that’s powerful, engaging, and, above all, extremely fun.

Those talented and unstoppable Finnish rockers kick off another thrilling metal party with The Burning Within, offering their incendiary blend of Heavy Metal with 80’s Hard rock always boosted by Noora’s undisputed soaring vocals, followed by Here We Are, one of the singles previously released by the band which sees Janne kicking ass as usual on keys, giving the song the band’s trademark dancing vibe; whereas the title-track Steelbound sounds absolutely upbeat, with Joona and Juuso’s riffs walking hand in hand with the whimsical keys by Janne. Twilight Cabaret is another song that reeks of Battle Beast, with Noora melting our faces as usual with her hypnotic vocals supported by Pyry’s classic beats; and let’s say Battle Beast are one of the very few bands that can make happy music sound so badass like Last Goodbye thanks to Noora’s powerful vocals, while their guitars sound as electrified as they can be supported by Eero’s thunderous bass.

The second half of the album begins with the cinematic interlude The Long Road, setting the stage for the band to crush us all with Blood Of Heroes, as epic as it is imposing, bringing elements from Viking and Power Metal to their core sound, with all background vocals supporting the battle-like screams by Noora in great fashion. Joona and Juuso rev up the band’s metal engine in Angel Of Midnight, also fully inspired by 80’s rock and metal music, a radio-friendly tune that will surely please all fans of the band; and let’s keep jumping up and down and dancing with Battle Beast in Riders Of The Storm, absolutely futuristic and fun, like if it was taken from an afternoon adventure movie from the 80’s. Finally, the band closes the album on a high note with Watch The Sky Fall, a strong contender to make it to their live performances, where their guitar solos and striking keys bring an extra headbanging touch to the music.

In a nutshell, with Steelbound the band opens an exciting new chapter that offers some very heavy tracks, flirts with pop, unapologetic party anthems, and the empowering title song, or in other words, it is a thunderous monument of defiance and resilience, an earnest battle cry for all who have ever been dismissed, diminished, or silenced and also a big slab of positivity and joy. Hence, you can stay in touch with those marvelous Finnish warriors via Facebook and Instagram, subscribe to their YouTube channel, stream their striking music on Spotify, and of course grab a copy of Steelbound by clicking HERE, throwing your worries into the next trash can during the album’s 38 minutes of duration, and sing, dance, headbang, or do whatever feels right to the sound of their undisputed heavy music.

Album Review – Enragement / Extinguish All Existence (2025)

Playing their own blend of Technical and Brutal Death Metal, this Finnish entity will extinguish all existence to the sound of their invigorating and powerful new album.

Playing their own blend of Technical and Brutal Death Metal that’s insanely heavy and yet incredibly varied, Helsinki, Finland-based entity Enragement returns with their fourth full-length beast, an invigorating, powerful expression that ticks all the boxes entitled Extinguish All Existence. Following up on their 2022 album Atrocities, and showcasing a sinister artwork by Daemorph Art, the new album by Atte Ojanne and Tuomas Iivanainen on vocals and guitars, Juhana Korkka Heinonen on vocals and bass, and Lasse Sannikka on drums is a striking depiction of the band’s raw power, aggression and versatility, cementing their name not only in the local Finnish scene, but also everywhere else in the world where the fusion of violence and dexterity is truly appreciated.

Lasse shows no mercy for our souls and begins blasting his drums in Vorarephilia, a demented onrush of Technical Death Metal boosted by the band’s deranged growls and screeches, and things get even more serious and intricate in Abyssal Hellscapes, with the strident guitar lines by Atte and Tuomas bringing an extra dosage of violence to the band’s already demonic sounds. Then a Doom Metal-infused intro morphs into another killer attack by Enragement titled Pathogenesis, where their sulfurous vociferations match perfectly with the finesse and rage flowing from their riffs and solos; whereas the quartet keeps smashing our frail bodies with their blend of Death Metal in Parasitic Ingress, with Lasse once again sounding inhumane behind his drums, followed by Harbingers of Degradation, one of the heaviest, most infuriated songs of the album while also presenting extremely detailed and complex lines, with Lasse stealing the spotlight with his ruthless drumming.

Vesuvius is perhaps the “weakest” of all songs, although it’s still a pulverizing display of the band’s core Technical Death Metal, and it’s pedal to the metal in the technical yet venomous Hypercarnivorous, with the guitar duel by Atte and Tuomas exhaling heaviness and intricacy in an overdose of sonic madness by those talented Finnish metallers. After that, an infuriated attack of harsh growls, blast beats and razor-edged riffs will penetrate deep inside your soul in Insectiferous Abomination, living up to the legacy of complex and violent extreme music, and it’s time to break our necks headbanging to the utterly heavy Natural Mass Asphyxiation, with Juhana and Lasse making sure the earth trembles to the sound of their vicious kitchen. Then we have the title-track Extinguish All Existence closing the album on the most demented note you can think of, where the entire band sounds infernally awesome and with Atte, Tuomas and Juhana bursting their lungs screaming in the name of Death Metal.

In a nutshell, Enragement have struck the right balance with Extinguish All Existence, making their album satisfying, interesting, and also hugely enjoyable, in special for admirers of the bestial music crafted by Cutterred Flesh, Devourment, Abominable Putridity, Blood Red Throne, Katalepsy, Benighted, and Aborted, just to name a few. You can find more details about such an amazing Finnish band on Facebook and on Instagram, stream their awesome music on Spotify, and above all that, show them your utmost support by purchasing their new album from their BandCamp or from the Transcending Obscurity Records’ BandCamp, main store, US store or EU store. It’s time to extinguish all existence, and the music found in the new album by Enragement will most definitely work as a great soundtrack for the cleansing of our putrid and decaying world.

Album Review – Amorphis / Borderland (2025)

Finland’s own Melodic Heavy Metal and Rock masters stand on the cusp of a compelling new chapter, fully embracing their melodic sensibilities while venturing into fresh, uncharted sonic landscapes.

A groundbreaking and genre-defying metal band still featuring its original lineup (with a few exceptionally talented additions) and only growing stronger with time, Helsinki, Finland’s own Melodic Heavy Metal/Rock masters Amorphis stand on the cusp of a compelling new chapter, the captivating Borderland, the impressive fifteenth studio album in their unrelenting 35-year journey. Produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen at  Hansen Studios, and displaying a classy artwork by Marald van Haasteren, the new album by frontman Tomi Joutsen, guitarists Esa Holopainen and Tomi Koivusaari, bassist Olli-Pekka “Oppu” Laine, keyboardist Santeri Kallio, and drummer Jan Rechberger sees the band fully embracing their melodic sensibilities while venturing into fresh, uncharted sonic landscapes.

The band wastes no time and begins embellishing the airwaves with their blend of rock and metal in The Circle, with the guitars by Esa and Tomi transpiring melody, accompanied by the classic bass by Oppu; whereas the cinematic keys by Santeri are exactly what Tomi Joutsen needs to shine with both his clean vocals and deep guttural in Bones, a lecture in Progressive Metal by those veterans, followed by Dancing Shadow, another blast of classy metal music sounding modern yet deeply rooted in their own core essence, with Jan hammering his drums just the way we like it. Amorphis have mastered the art of mixing truly heavy sounds with ethereal, mesmerizing passages, which is the case in Fog to Fog, and their darkened feast goes on with The Strange, a mix of Gothic and Melodic Death Metal that sounds a bit generic if compared to the rest of the album.

The second half of the album begins with the also melodic and enfolding Tempest, with their acoustic guitars walking hand in hand with Santeri’s whimsical keys in a beautiful ballad by the boys. Light and Shadow is a song that perfectly depicts the present and future of Amorphis, with Tomi Joutsen once again leading his henchmen with his classic vocals and growls while the music remains as inspiring as it can be; and Esa and Tomi Koivusaari continue to fire their stylish riffs in The Lantern, sounding even atmospheric at times thanks to the beautiful keys by Santeri. The title-track Borderland brings forward the perfect fusion of all rock and metal styles found in their music, with Oppu and Jan making sure the ambience feels thunderous and groovy until the very last second, while lastly, they let their Melodic Doom Metal vein arise in the closing song Despair, with Tomi Joutsen stealing the show with a fantastic vocal performance.

With deep respect for the past and eyes firmly on the future, and with extensive touring ahead, Amorphis continue to shape the landscape of Heavy Metal with grace, finesse and integrity in Borderland. “After three and a half decades, we still follow our instincts,” commented guitarist Tomi Koivusaari. “And honestly, Borderland might be the most Amorphis-sounding album we’ve ever made. After such a long and successful career, that feels pretty damn great!” Those undisputed rock and metal veterans are waiting for you with more of their music, news and tour dates on Facebook and on Instagram, as well as on YouTube and on Spotify, and you can obviously put your damned hands on Borderland by clicking HERE, letting the melodious yet visceral sounds blasted by one of the most important bands to ever arise from the Nordic countries penetrate deep inside your metallic heart.

Album Review – Refusal / Venomous Human Concept (2025)

This Finnish beast returns with its third full-length opus, delivering a raw and unrelenting blend of Death Metal infused with Grindcore and Hardcore elements.

Formed in Helsinki, Finland, in early 2008, Death Metal/Grindcore outfit Refusal is set to unleash upon humanity their third full-length album, entitled Venomous Human Concept, the follow-up to their 2019 offering Epitome of Void. Delivering a raw and unrelenting blend of Death Metal infused with Grindcore and Hardcore elements, striking a perfect balance between groove-driven intensity and razor-sharp precision, the band currently formed of Juhani Paasipohja on vocals, Tero Pirhonen and Kalle Kuosmanen on the guitars, Timo Pirhonen on bass, and Aleksi Roitto on drums is on fire throughout their entire new album, with the sharp mixing by Olli Nokkala at Studio Kolotila and the first-class mastering by Henri Sorvali at Trollhouse Audio turning it into a must-listen for fans of Napalm Death, Misery Index, Entombed, and Rotten Sound, among several others.

Tero and Kalle will cut your skin deep with their dirty, caustic riffs in Scholar of Perversion, while Juhani already barks and roars like a creature from darkness. The title-track Venomous Human Concept tells a story of rising up against the ruling class, and the ones who hold the wealth and power; musically speaking, it’s a demented hybrid of Death Metal and Grindcore led by the insane drums by Aleksi, followed by The Grip Tightens, sounding even more infuriated, or in other words, it’s a demonic display of Death Metal where Juhani vociferates rabidly nonstop. The band continues to spread hatred and violence in Insatiable God, with the scorching riffs by Tero and Kalle inspiring us all for some wild headbanging, and those Finnish death metallers show no mercy for our cranial skulls in War of Nothing, with Aleksi once again crushing his enemies behind his drums.

There’s no sign of the band slowing down or sounding mellower; quite the contrary, it’s total anarchy in Dehumanize, blasting our heads with their furious Death Metal onrush, whereas We Are the Undead is one of the most violent tracks of the entire album, overflowing aggression thanks to another venomous performance by Juhani with his demented roars and the always demolishing beats and fills by Aleksi. Their violent sounds continue to fill every single space in the air in Sleeping Leviathan, with the stringed axes by Tero, Kalle and Timo transpiring pure, unfiltered Death Metal magic. There’s still time to slam into the pit to the hybrid of Death Metal with Grindcore entitled Congregation of the Eyeless, again presenting an avalanche of piercing riffs and infernal growls, and the band then ends the album with the Doom Metal-infused Eternal Refrain, sounding dark and sinister until the very end, with the hammering drums by Aleksi feeling utterly chaotic.

After all is said and done, Venomous Human Concept, which is available for purchase from the band’s own BandCamp or from the Time To Kill Records’ webstore, will definitely help Refusal cement their name not only in the always incendiary local Finnish scene, but also all over the world where our good old Death Metal is properly appreciated, and you can also support those hellish metallers by following them on Facebook and on Instagram, and by streaming their discography on Spotify. In other words, get ready to be pulverized by Refusal to the sound of Venomous Human Concept because, as you might already know, Death Metal is their business, and business is good.

Concert review – H.E.A.T (Tavastia-klubi, Helsinki, FIN, 02/18/2025)

An electrifying night of hard rock mastery, where Sweden meets Finland in a fiery performance that left the audience breathless.

OPENING ACT: Temple Balls

Swedish hard rock powerhouse H.E.A.T made a triumphant return to Finland at the iconic Tavastia delivering an electrifying performance that left fans exhilarated. With their new album, Welcome to the Future, set to drop in April, the band proved once again why they are one of the most celebrated acts in the modern hard rock scene. Before the main act, Finnish rockers Temple Balls warmed up the crowd with their high-energy sound. Hailing from Oulu, the band has been making waves by opening for industry legends such as Sonata Arctica and Bruce Dickinson. Promoting their latest album, Avalanche (2023), they set the tone for an unforgettable night.

From the moment the band took the stage, it was clear they were on a mission to captivate the audience. Their setlist was a well-balanced mix of fan favorites: songs like “Lonely Stranger” and “Dead Weight” showcased their signature anthemic choruses and driving guitar work, while “Trap” and “Bad Bad Bad” got the audience singing along. H.E.A.T
The anticipation in Tavastia was palpable as the lights dimmed and Glenn Frey’s “The Heat Is On” played through the speakers. The Swedish rockers hit the stage with “Disaster”, one of the two brand-new songs from their upcoming album, instantly igniting the crowd. Vocalist Kenny Leckremo commanded the stage with his amazing vocals and infectious energy, while Dave Dalone’s fiery guitar solos kept the adrenaline pumping. The setlist was a well-curated journey through their discography, featuring powerful renditions of “Emergency”, “Dangerous Ground”, and “Hollywood”.

One of the standout moments came during “Beg Beg Beg”, where the band seamlessly incorporated a snippet of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” – a nod to rock legends of the past. Midway through the show, the anthem “Living on the Run” had fans singing at the top of their lungs. The band couldn’t hide the joy of being there, specially Kenny who said a few times how they like to play in Finland and how excited they were to show the new songs, introducing the yet-to-be-released “Bad Time for Love”. Always with high energy, the band made the fans incredibly happy with classics such as “1000 Miles” and “One by One”, before the grand finale with “Tearing Down the Walls”. H.E.A.T’s performance was a masterclass in modern hard rock: passionate, explosive, and engaging from start to finish. With Welcome to the Future on the horizon, this show served as a powerful reminder that the band remains at the forefront of the genre. The very next day, Finnish fans were surprised by the announcement that H.E.A.T will play at Rockfest in Turku this summer. Album Review – Tormentor Tyrant / Excessive Escalation Of Cruelty (2025)

This seasoned trio of musicians from Finland will crush you with their first full-length album, one of the most savage, grinding, furious and primordial Death Metal releases you could face this year.

An ageless entity of evil featuring members from Corpsessed, Solothus, Tyranny, Profetus and Cataleptic, drawing musical influences from Death Metal’s first steps into existence, Helsinki/Järvenpää, Finland based Tormentor Tyrant will leave no survivors with their full-frontal assault of sonic devastation to the sound of their first full-length offering, titled Excessive Escalation Of Cruelty. Recorded at Furnace 5034 and Rehearsalucifer Studios, produced by Tormentor Tyrant, mastered by The Hand of Doom at Toxic Basement Studio, and displaying a sick artwork by Roni Ärling (with layout by Giorgio Spevo of Everlasting Spew Records), the new album by vocalist and guitarist S.Envenom, bassist and vocalist M.Malignant, and drummer J.Carnage is perfect for fans of Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Skeletal Remains, and Laceration, among others, resulting in one of the most savage, grinding, furious and primordial Death Metal releases you could face this year.

The Mephistophelean intro Upheaval Of Tyranny will transport you to the ruthless world ruled by Tormentor Tyrant in Capital Of Pain, offering us all a little more than two minutes of pure savagery led by the inhumane, demented roars by S.Envenom, and let’s keep slamming into the mosh pit to the sound of Torture Divine, where J.Carnage doesn’t stop hammering his drums not even for a single second. Their feast of violence has no time to end, with Tartarean Iron Grip presenting their most destructive side thanks to another bestial performance by J.Carnage on drums; and the trio sounds absolutely merciless and possessed in Crueler Tomorrow, with M.Malignant blasting his bass nonstop while also roaring manically.

In Pit of Anguish, there’s nothing else to do but diving into the circle pit like a true metalmaniac to the demonic vocals by S.Envenom and the band’s vile riffs and classic Death Metal solos, followed by Cosmic Wild Hunt, a brutal and demented display of Finnish Death Metal where their riffs, blast beats and infernal guttural roars sound perfect for some action during their live performances. Then it feels like they’re even more infuriated in Terminal Revelation, with the ruthless drums by J.Carnage providing S.Envenom with the exact level of violence needed to distill his visceral growls; whereas Heavy Death Bombardment, the last song of the album, is just as insane as all previous tracks, where S.Envenom and M.Malignant are beasts incarnate with their riffs and solos.

There’s no extreme down-tuning, no mysticality, nor anything like that in Excessive Escalation Of Cruelty, just sheer unrelenting evil violence in the old way, and the guys from Tormentor Tyrant would simply love to hear what you have to say about their demolishing creations on Facebook and on Instagram, and you can also stream their music on Spotify and, above all that, purchase their fulminating opus by clicking HERE (mailorder) or HERE (BandCamp). The beyond talented and savage musicians from Tormentor Tyrant are not fooling around; they’re out for blood, armed with the ass-kicking Death Metal found in their new album, and you better watch out because once you’re caught into their hurricane of sonic violence, there’s absolutely no way out.

Album Review – Barathrum / Überkill (2024)

Behold this beast of an album by one of Finland’s very first Black Metal bands that proves why they are eternal.

Formed in the distant year of 1991 in the land of ice and snow, Helsinki, Finland-based Black/Doom Metal horde Barathrum needs no introduction, remaining as one of Finland’s very first Black Metal bands and, more importantly, one of the longest-running. Now seven years after the release of their 2017 beast Fanatiko, the band comprised of Demonos Sova on vocals, Ruttokieli on lead guitars, Nuklear Tormentörr on bass, and Vendetta on drums returns in full force with their tenth studio album, the highly anticipated metal attack titled Überkill. A no shenanigans, in-your-face blast of extreme music, Überkill proves that the Finns are, above all, a very great Heavy Metal band, just one that’s jet-black, ass-kicking, and bass-driven as fuck. Simple-yet-sublime pleasures, now and forever. Again, Barathrum are eternal!

Death by Steel is absolutely dark and evil from the very first second, with the dirty riffs by Ruttokieli infesting the atmosphere before Demonos Sova attacks with his demonic gnarls; and blending the obscurity of Black Metal with Hardcore and Rock N’ Roll, the band offers the headbanging Mountain of Bones, led by the classic drumming by Vendetta, whereas a wicked intro gradually morphs into the harsh, metallic feast titled Spark Plugs of Purgatory, again with Demonos Sova crushing our damned souls with his goblin-like vociferations. More of their infernal Punk Rock-infused riffs will penetrate deep inside your dirty mind in Black Magick Rites, while Nuklear Tormentörr and Vendetta craft a rumbling base with their respective bass and drums, and investing in a much darker sound we have Ritual Murder, with Nuklear Tormentörr hammering his bass manically until the music evolves into an absolute chaotic vibe perfect for slamming into the pit.

White Red Black and Pale is another rock and metal extravaganza by those Finnish blasphemers led by the venomous gnarls by Demonos Sova, sounding slow, steady and evil from start to finish, followed by Denial of God, a beautiful name for another impious tune by Barathrum, offering our putrid ears an overdose of harsh sounds while Vendetta pounds his drums in the name of old school Black and Thrash Metal. It’s then time for seven minutes of sheer obscurity and blasphemy in the form of Dark Sorceress, where the cryptic, ritualistic vocals by Demonos Sova match flawlessly with the Doom Metal-inspired sounds blasted by his bandmates, and closing the album we’re treated to the venomous sounds of the title-track Überkill, oozing Barathrum from the very first second, with Ruttokieli stealing the spotlight armed with his wicked, scorching riffs.

Evil has many forms as people like to say, and after listening to Überkill you’ll quickly realize Barathrum are definitely one of the manifestations of everything that’s immoral, sinful and blasphemous. That means they more than nailed it with Überkill, and if you want to join one of the most important hordes in the history of Finnish Black Metal you can start following the band on Facebook, stream their hellish creations on Spotify or any other streaming service, and above all that, purchase their incendiary new spawn from their own BandCamp page or from the KVLT shop. Überkill is the perfect example as to why Barathrum are still alive and kicking (and therefore haunting our damned souls) after so many decades, and I bet those devilish creatures will keep on decimating us all with their undisputed extreme music for many years to come with amazing albums like their newborn beast.

Concert Review – Blaze Bayley (On the Rocks, Helsinki, Finland, 07/12/2024)

Blaze Bayley returned to Helsinki, Finland to celebrate his Iron Maiden’s 30th anniversary, and of course we joined the party!

***Review and photos by Giovanna Marques***

Once again, I had the chance to be at our beloved bar and concert venue, On the Rocks Helsinki, this time to see Blaze Bayley present his 30th Anniversary Iron Maiden tour.

The concert was sold out and the crowd was ready to rock even before the show began, waving Iron Maiden flags and wearing band shirts.

As a “thank you for the support” gift to the fans in Finland, Blaze held a free meet-and-greet for all the fans who bought tickets to the show. This was a very special experience for me since Blaze was one of the first concerts I ever saw in my life when I was 12 years old and I carry great memories from that day. During the meet-and-greet, he thanked everyone for their presence, signed merchandise, and posed for selfies. This is the third time I’ve had the chance to see him live and every time he has been very kind, patient, and grateful to the fans.

OPENING ACT: ABSOLVA
Absolva is a heavy metal band from Manchester, UK and consists of Martin McNee on drums, Chris Appleton on lead guitar and vocals, Karl Schramm on bass, Martin McNee on drums and Luke Appleton (ex-Iced Earth) on guitar and backing vocals. They released their first album in 2012 and play high-quality heavy metal, clearly influenced by the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) with catchy choruses, melodic riffs, and speedy solos, making it easy to headbang to every song.

Since 2014, Absolva has been the support band for Blaze Bayley on both tours and recorded albums. It’s great to see such fine musicians as part of Blaze’s history after so many years of temporary and rotating touring musicians.

Absolva’s concert was technically impressive, melodious, and definitely energized the crowd. The band played songs that had fans singing from beginning to end, including tracks from their latest album, Fire in the Sky, released in 2022. It’s totally worth checking out!

BLAZE BAYLEY
After a very short break for Absolva’s musicians to reorganize the stage, Blaze Bayley was welcomed by a standing ovation as he entered.

The crowd, already pumped from Absolva’s performance, couldn’t wait to hear his Iron Maiden songs. The gig started with “Lord of the Flies,” which gave the audience goosebumps as Blaze sang the first words.

The joy and excitement of seeing Blaze back on stage after his quadruple bypass surgery following a heart attack in 2023 are beyond words. I was emotional and thrilled to see the vocalist, who has overcome so many personal setbacks, return to deliver such a stunning performance.

The next song was “Sign of the Cross,” and the songs kept coming one after another! In total, Blaze played sixteen songs, with only four from his solo era: “Rage” and “Circle of Stone” from his latest album of the same name, as well as “Warrior” and “Pull Yourself Up” from his 2021 album War Within Me.

As a Blaze fan, I confess I was hoping to hear some songs from “Silicon Messiah”, an absolutely legendary album. However, the excitement of hearing so many great songs played live overshadowed any disappointment.

The concert was enriched by moments where Blaze shared stories behind each song, such as when he was in Argentina and learned that one of his schoolmates had gone to fight as a marine in the Falklands War (Guerra de Malvinas) and died there. The memories of those times, mixed with the sadness of a war fought by ordinary people, like you and me, inspired Blaze to start writing a poem that eventually became the lyrics to “Como Estais Amigos.”

I haven’t seen On the Rocks as crowded as it was that day and Blaze delivered what the fans were expecting and more.

For those who continue to pity Blaze as a guy living off his “Iron Maiden golden years,” I challenge you to buy a ticket and see him live. As he has mentioned in interviews, this “30th Iron Maiden Anniversary tour” is a celebration of all the good that has stayed with him and his music, not just a nostalgic memory of what has passed. Blaze’s music is alive and doing very well!

Concert Review – Sonic Rites Festival 2024 (Ääniwalli, Helsinki, Finland, 05/17-05/18/2024)

Sonic Rites is quickly becoming one of the biggest names of independent festivals in the Nordics dedicated to underground heavy music. What started as an event in a restaurant venue in Helsinki five years later is now presented in a two-day indoor festival, featuring two stages dedicated to, as they mention themselves, ”the darkest and heaviest elements of music”.

Sonic Rites has provided a platform for avant-garde, experimental, and alternative music genres, fostering community among artists and fans. The festival has been instrumental in showcasing diverse talent, from local Finnish acts to international underground artists and its importance lies not only in promoting musical innovation but also in challenging mainstream music norms and nurturing a subculture that thrives on artistic freedom and expression.

This year, the festival, which was almost sold out before the start of the event, took place once again at Ääniwalli, a venue housed in an industrial building, which gives it a raw and authentic ambiance that perfectly complements the underground music scene. The venue features multiple rooms, allowing for intimate performances as well as larger, more energetic shows, and it’s equipped with high-quality sound systems and lighting, ensuring an immersive experience for both performers and audiences. Ääniwalli’s industrial aesthetic, characterized by exposed brick, metalwork, and minimalist decor, provides a gritty yet welcoming environment that fosters creative expression and community.

DAY 1: 17.05.2024

Unfortunately, due to work schedule, I was not able to attend the beginning of the event, so the first band I was able to watch was SUM OF R (SUI/FIN). They started their activities in 2008 and since then have been through different phases of their sound, and today we can witness an experimental and synth-based dark ambient that creates a unique and delirious experience that I have definitely enjoyed.

The next on the schedule was PELKKÄ POUTANEN, a solo project delivering an interesting mixture of vocals, Finnish folk, and electronic music. Although the show was on a smaller stage, it felt like an already big stage star.

Also on the smaller stage, SUR-RUR (FIN) played an energetic gig, making the crowd jump and sing. The Finnish band, founded in 1996, plays a mixture of hardcore, prog, alternative, and punk rock.

Next, on the big stage, it was time for the English masters of GODFLESH to show their heavy power. Their performance was full of energy, making the night even hotter with all the intensity of their show. They were responsible for the venue to get absolutely crowded and proved that, as pioneers of industrial metal, they really know how to make a good show. Their music matched perfectly with the surroundings, giving the impression that the venue was picked to match their music.

During the interval for the gears exchange in the mainstage, JOLEA, the Finnish artist and music producer, was showing all the beauty of her other-worldly ambient music on the smaller stage.

The first night of Sonic Rites 2024 ended with a rocket performance by DISCHARGE (UK). If you think that after 6 hours of music the audience would be tired and ready to go home, you are wrong. The minute the band entered the stage, it was like we all had a shot of energy in our veins. From the first to the last song, there was no one standing still, either banging their heads, mosh-pitting, stage diving or simply moving their body to the rhythm of hardcore punk madness. Even after the last song we could feel the electricity in the air, and we left Ääniwalli in joyful sweat, ready for another day full of heavy music.

DAY 2: 18.05.2024

The second day was the most anticipated for me. Again, unfortunately, due to work reasons I was not able to attend the event from its beginning. Luckily I was able to be present for the opening act of the bigger stage, the performance of THE DEVIL’S TRADE from Hungary. Their show was melancholic, political, and bewitching from the start to the end. Even when I couldn’t understand the lyrics in Hungarian, I could feel the heaviness of the words sung, and together with the doom, folk, and heavy melodies, the band created a beautiful and unforgettable show.

Next, LOKA (FIN) was filling the smaller stage with its sludge, doom, and heavy songs. LOKA is a local band created by members from bands such as Unkind and Radien and they released their debut album in April this year. The album is a must-listen if you are into machine drumming doom!

On the bigger stage, it was time for Polish act DOPELORD to show their charm. It was definitely one of the loudest and heaviest performances of the festival, literally making the structures of the venue shake. Their psychedelic stoner doom songs combine heavy riffs, horror, and occultism lyrics with a sarcastic attitude. It made me extremely happy that I finally had the chance to see them live since I am a follower of the band from their first album, “Magick Rites”, to their last release, “Songs for Satan”. They proved it doesn’t matter if you are listening to their albums or watching their gig, a good trip is guaranteed. Definitely a show to remember!

On the smaller stage, NERO KANE (ITA) was performing simultaneously with DOPELORD on the bigger stage and therefore I did not have the chance to watch the Italian duo. That was, in my opinion, the only downside of the festival: concurrent gigs.

Luckily, I had the chance to watch part of the KOLLAPS show. The trio, originally from Melbourne, Australia but now based in Europe, makes an extremely violent-noisy performance. Combining heavy sound with live performative arts such as scraping and banging metal objects, the Post-Industrialists delivered a chaotic and artistic presentation.

On the bigger stage, it was time for the German duo MANTAR to show their sludge metal. Although they were extremely sick, as mentioned by the singer and guitarist Hanno Klänhardt, they decided to perform the show anyway. The concert was heavy and furious and as a gift to their fans, they played songs from their first album, material not always played in their gigs. The audience happily welcomed the set list and headbanged until the last song.

On the smaller stage, HERO DISHONEST (FIN) was kicking the audience’s ears with some good hardcore punk music. The space was absolutely crowded and as a small woman, it was just impossible for me to watch the gig, so I could only hear the last songs from the entrance of the space.

On the bigger stage, it was finally time for the New Orleans sludge metal pioneers of EYEHATEGOD to bring Sonic Rites 2024 to a perfect end. Their soundcheck was already a show and the fans were already enjoying themselves and vibing without the concert having even officially started. When vocalist Mike IX Williams entered the stage, the crowd began to cheer and prepare the mosh pit. The gig was a delicious heavy slap in our ears with a closing that could not be more perfect: EYEHATEGOD playing Black Sabbath’s Hand of Doom.

The 2024 edition of Sonic Rites ended and left the fans like myself eager for next year’s edition. Next year’s dates have been announced already. Follow them for more updates!

Concert Review – Graham Bonnet Band (On the Rocks, Helsinki, Finland, 04/29/2024)

Once again, The Headbanging Moose takes Finland by storm, this time to talk about the amazing classic rock singer Graham Bonnet and his awesome band playing in Helsinki.

OPENING ACT: Wishing Well

As already mentioned by Renata in the Brother Firetribe gig review, The Headbanging Moose is now also in Finland, and I, Giovanna, am more than thrilled to be part of this great team! To celebrate my first contribution to THM, nothing better than Graham Bonnet, an absolute classic Rock and Roll legend showing that age is just a number and what matters in the attitude and will to rock.

The evening filled with pure quality Rock and Roll started with a performance of the Helsinki local band WISHING WELL. The band first released their material in 2015, but it has been a long-term project of the leader and guitarist, Anssi Korkiakoski. During the concert, the band played their classic songs, greatly influenced by the 1970s and 1980s classic rock bands, leaving a nostalgic and energetic feeling in the house, making the audience eager for more good rock and roll. It is worth it to check out the band’s material if you are also a fan of classic rock.

GRAHAM BONNET BAND

After the usual break to exchange the gears for the next band, we were finally gifted with the presence of Graham Bonnet and the band members on stage.

The gig started with some technical difficulties making the public unable to hear the bassist Beth-Ami Heavenstone’s chords but after a short complaint and some screams at the sound table everything was sorted out and the gig started for real. The band opened the night with the Rainbow Cover “Eyes of the World” and the British singer showed that 76 is just a number and there is no such thing as being too old to rock and roll. The band continued with a few more Rainbow songs and although my particular favorite “Love’s no Friend” was one of the highest moments of the show in my opinion, the crowd went crazy with ”Since You’ve Been Gone” leaving a super energetic atmosphere for the keyboard solo by the Italian Allessandro Bertoni.

After the short break, the singer came back to the stage and the band played songs from Bonnet’s Solo career emphasizing the quality of the musicians present in his solo albums.

I must confess that being a Michael Schenker fanatic, I was anxiously awaiting for the Assault Attack album songs, and when the band finally played “Desert Song” it was an absolute delight. The Brazilian guitarist Conrado Pesinato showed in every step of the concert that he is more than capable to carry the legacy of the astonishing guitarists that were part of Graham Bonnet’s career. Pesinato presented his version of the songs and solos, never letting the audience down and filling the concert with great technique and soul.

After The first Michael Schenker cover, the band played my personal favorite from their album “Day Out in Nowhere”, the song “Uncle John”. Something that made the concert even richer was the stories told by the members about the songs and events surrounding the band and the singer. For example, Graham explained that he wrote the lyrics of the song ”Uncle John” for a teacher who was beloved by his students but was lately charged and arrested accused of pedophilia.

Next, came the “Jet to Jet” drum solo, and we were presented with the energetic drummer Francis Cassol, also a Brazilian musician. Francis was chosen to be part of the Swedish and Finnish leg of the European tour and I think they could not have chosen any better! After the solo, the band played more songs from the singer’s solo career and covers. ”Assault Attack” and ”Too Young to Die, Too Drunk to Live” made the crowd sing loud, leaving the space for the final and vibrant song ”Lost in Hollywood”. The charisma of all band members made the night more than special. I am hoping they come back next year for another spectacular and nostalgic evening.
