Concert Review – Imminence (The Opera House, Toronto, ON, 11/30/2023)

A feast of top-of-the-line Metalcore made in the United States and Sweden warmed up the hearts of all Torontonian fans on a cold and windy night in the city.

OPENING ACT: Until I Wake

The streets of Toronto were cold and windy on the night of November 30, but The Opera House had their doors open early to welcome around 300 Metalcore fans inside to keep them warm, have some cold beverages and listen to great music, courtesy of the opener UNTIL I WAKE, our close neighbours hailing from Buffalo, New York, in the United States, and Swedish metalcore monsters IMMINENCE.

UNTIL I WAKE started off the evening at 7:50pm. It was the band’s first time in Toronto and they did not disappoint. Their raw energy, blistering rhythm and powerful lyrics started the crowd off into a head banging frenzy. One interesting fact about Until I Wake is that they had a guest vocalist as they are trying to find a new singer. Well, I personally chatted with some of the band members after their set and asked who he was, but all they could tell me is that they would like him to be the new frontman for them. Such mysterious guest singer put in his work last night, jumping off the stage and onto the barrier to interact with concert goers, and he even joined them in the center of it all to start a huge circle pit before getting back on the stage. IMMINENCE

After a short break, more precisely at 9pm, Sweden’s own IMMINENCE got on the stage and things heated up, with bodies being jammed so tight together the heat in the building was humid and sweaty. Imminence is a band known for their unique hard rock sound and melodic electric violin, which I thought would sound weird but wow, I was pleasantly surprised as I have never seen them before. They played a one hour and fifteen minute set, and the crowd at The Opera House sang along with the band every song from what I could see. The love the fans have for the band is outstanding. In addition, Imminence’s sound guys did an absolutely stellar job, making them sound like it’s right from the album and their own lighting tech simply nailed the strobe and color bars as well. Metal Chick of the Month – Anni Kokkonen

Your love is poison… Running through my veins!

As it’s getting colder and colder in the Northern Hemisphere, we needed a metal lady for the month of December who’s not only used to this chilly, frosty weather, but who can also warm up our hearts with her undisputed talent, charisma and passion for heavy music. Hailing from the beautiful land of ice and snow, commonly referred to as Finland, she’s the lead singer for Symphonic/Melodic Power Metal band Nevicate, and for Symphonic/Melodic Groove Metal band Stormbreaker, as well as a lyricist and a pianist, always putting a huge smile on our faces and inspiring us to raise our horns with her powerful voice and whimsical keys. If you have no idea who Anni Kokkonen is, get ready to be stunned by one of the must-see names of the current underground scene in Finland, taking you on a wild journey through the realms of Melodic Metal in her homeland.

Anni started her career in music as the vocalist for Joensuu, Finland-based Symphonic/Melodic Power Metal outfit Nevicate (which by the way means “snowfall” in Italian) back in 2014, when the band was actually formed. Sometimes labeled as a band that plays “Pop Metal”, the music by Nevicate projects a great deal of musical features including modern EDM, classically orchestrated “drama-music” and dark, mystical Nordic atmospheres, or in other words, it’s a mixture of symphonic tones, pop vibes and electronic elements, with all lyrics revolving around psychological themes, dealing with the fragile human mind and wounds caused by adversity, resulting in a blend of feminine power, masculine headbanging and melancholic moodiness. So far, the band formed of our diva Anni Kokkonen on vocals, Lassi Porali on the guitars and backing vocals, Lumi Ollila on keyboards and backing vocals, Oskari Hevonkoski on bass and Toni Manninen on drums released their self-titled debut demo in 2016, followed by the singles Shattered, in 2017, The Surface, in 2019, and Dewdrops, in 2021, with Anni being responsible for the vocals and lyrics in all of them.

The band began to gain more ground in 2015 after participating and getting more encouragement in a project called Rock Academy in Joensuu, during which the band developed their own personal sound that reaches both catchy and heavy spheres. Having a strong musical background which can be heard from their meandering song arrangements and rigorous co-playing, all band members exploit both their steady musical knowledge and the emotion and interpretation entailed by years of playing experience. No idea at all if the band is on hold, if they called it quits, or if they’re just taking their time before their next release, but one thing is certain, and that is we need more of the music by Nevicate.

We can all say that right now Anni is fully focused on her Symphonic/Melodic Groove Metal band Stormbreaker, playing melodic but deliciously aggressive metal music. Founded in 2021 in Joensuu, the band currently comprised of Anni alongside veteran musician Petri Tarvainen on vocals, Jaakko Kauppinen and Tomi Virtanen on the guitars, Tatu Heikkinen on bass and Sami Ratilainen on drums was originally formed as a solo project of Petri Tarvainen, employing a host of familiar traits including a dynamic male and female vocal approach, stunning musicianship, and classic arrangements, being therefore recommended for fans of Arch Enemy, Beast In Black and Nightwish, among others. Earlier this year the band released their debut effort, a four-track EP overflowing adrenaline, harmony and rage entitled Vengeance, available for a full listen on YouTube, Spotify, BandCamp, Tidal and Apple Music, or click HERE for all things Stormbreaker.

Apart form her amazing work with Nevicate and Stormbreaker, we can also enjoy Anni and her hypnotizing vocals as a guest backing vocalist in the 2022 six-track EP Age of Mist, by Joensuu-based Melodic Death Metal band Cerebral Mist. The band is currently inactive due to the death of founding member Antti Parviainen in February 2018, with Age of Mist being finished posthumously by the remaining members of the band four years later to honour him and his work. Hence, you can enjoy the music by Cerebral Mist and celebrate the life of the deceased Antti Parviainen by listening to the EP in its entirety on BandCamp, on Spotify, or on YouTube. Furthermore, you can also enjoy Anni’s powerful vocals as a guest in the single Singularity (available on BandCamp, on Spotify, on YouTube, and on other streaming services), released in 2019 by Finnish Melodic Death Metal act Decrowned.

Not only a fantastic vocalist, Anni is also a skillful pianist who does improvisations and covers on her Instagram profile @piano_b_onfire, and as Anni states in the profile herself, she plays the piano “just for fun”. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure the fact Anni can play the piano so well is extremely helpful for her when it comes to writing music for any of her bands, and speaking about her influences, she mentioned her own feelings as one of the driving forces in her writing process. “Usually, my current life situation gets me to write down my feelings which gradually develop into a lyric form. Also, whenever I’m touched by some other things that can make me put my thoughts on paper,” commented our Melodic Death Metal diva.

It’s also important to mention how dynamic the duo of Anni and Petri is for Stormbreaker, with Anni not only doing the clean parts in paradox to Petri’s harsh growls, but also showcasing her more venomous side and doing some screams as well, again proving how versatile her vocals can be. Her vocals will remind you of a young Doro Pesch at times, ad also of the iconic Kimberly Goss (of bands like Sinergy and Avernus), and all that range and versatility can be appreciated in all of its glory when Anni hits the stage, as she truly loves to perform live. “Live performances are one of the most important things to us. They tell the listeners what the band is truly about and can easily reach new fans at the same time. And to me being on stage is the best part of doing music,” she commented.

Anni doesn’t only love to be on stage and bring her music to life in front of an audience, but she also believes music videos are another crucial part of any band. “Music videos are a great way to promote bands in order to get gigs, and making them can give new exciting experiences which is always great and motivational,” she said, and we must all agree it’s always great to see a charismatic performer like her on screen, right? And lastly, when asked in one of her interviews if she prefers physical copies like CD’s, LP’s and cassettes, or if she’s a fan of digital downloads, she actually answered both are necessary in our world today. “Both have their pros and cons. Digital downloads are easy to share and spread all over the world but of course it’s a different matter to put an actual CD on a shelf. That’s why we like to make physical copies as well so we can really feel our accomplishment in our own hands.” Hence, what are you waiting for to buy the music by Anni’s amazing bands in digital or physical format, or even both? I’m sure she’ll be more than happy with that, inspiring her to keep creating thrilling and beautiful music, always embellishing the airwaves of her homeland Finland and anywhere else where good music is appreciated with her striking voice.

Album Review – Adventum Diaboli / Mørke (2023)

A lone wolf from the Hellenic Black Metal scene returns with his tenth studio album, bringing sheer darkness to our damned hearts through the album’s impressive 52 minutes of music.

Many try to find solace in religion, but they offer no real answers. There is no ultimate meaning to existence, no grand design, no benevolent god watching over us. In the end, all we can do is accept our fate. We can find solace in the fact that we will eventually be swallowed by the great void and become one with the universe. Until then, we must live our lives with the knowledge that everything we do is ultimately meaningless. That’s the essence of what you’ll find in M​ø​rke (Norwegian for “darkness”), the impressive tenth studio album in ten years of existence by Volos, Greece-based Black Metal one-man army Adventum Diaboli, which means “The Arrival of Satan” in Latin. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Cosmic Lucifer Studios, and displaying a sinister artwork By Dimitris Kostopoulos, M​ø​rke is a classic and solid depiction of old school Black Metal by vocalist and instrumentalist Leviathan (aka Giorgos K.), once again proving why the extreme scene in Greece has been among the most fruitful and exciting ones for the past few decades.

A Doom Metal-infused intro titled The Death Of Light will darken your thoughts before Leviathan unleashes hell on earth in Demons Of My Youth, roaring and screaming in the name of evil while his guitars exhale an obscure lament that lives up to the legacy of classic Black Metal. In Eerie Existential Angst we’re treated to darkly poetic lyrics declaimed by Leviathan (“Mundane people passing by / Painted in blood / I see the sky / From horizon’s gloom / The impending doom”) while he delivers sinister yet mesmerizing riffs from his axe; and keeping the album at a high level of sulfur and darkness, Leviathan continues to crush his drums while also slashing his guitar strings in Reborn From Hellfire, generating a menacing ambience that continues in Air Of Despair, where a delicate yet grim intro evolves into another mid-tempo Black Metal feast offering our avid ears raw, melodic and caustic sounds until the very end. And Γαία Απόκοσμη offers more of Leviathan’s darkened, atmospheric sounds, with his anguished gnarls being fully inspired by contemporary Atmospheric Black Metal.

Featuring synths by guest musician Pan, which bring a touch of finesse to the overall result, De Nihil Philosophia is another melodic and enfolding Black Metal aria by Leviathan and his Adventum Diaboli, and get ready for more of Leviathan’s cryptic words in The Unholy Mysteries Of The Night (“Deep into the night’s dark / Of wisdom there’s not a spark / Secrets of life and death combined / A path not for the weak of mind”), while he generates at the same time a beyond Stygian ambience with his riffs and drums. Leviathan continues to masterfully show his love for all things darkness and evil in Soulless By Dawn, where his riffs sound haunting and austere, piercing our damned minds mercilessly; whereas the second to last blast of Black Metal by our lone wolf comes in the form of the melodic and melancholic The Grand Scheme Of Things, flowing into the ethereal outro The Absence of Meaning, putting a whimsical ending to the album.

Album Review – Aeonian Sorrow / Katara (2023)

A stunning album of sorrow, grief and melancholy made in Finland and Greece, dedicated to the loving memory of the grandparents of the band’s own vocalist and keyboardist Gogo Melone.

A project of Melodic Gothic and Doom Metal yet funeral and spiritual music that describes the eternal sorrow and misery above the earth, human nature and instincts under the ownership of grief and pain, Finland/Greece-based outfit Aeonian Sorrow has just unleashed upon us their sophomore full-length opus, entitled Katara. Produced, mixed and mastered by Saku Moilanen at Deep Noise Studios, and displaying a stylish and epic artwork by the band’s own vocalist, keyboardist and renowned illustrator Gogo Melone, the album was inspired by the Katara pass, a mountain pass in the Pindus mountains in northern Greece. According to the legend, Katara got its name from a despot who around 1800 set out from Ioannina to go to Trikala, but the bad weather in the area made it so difficult for him that he died on the way, and he cursed the mountain. There are more stories written about this pass; however, Katara is also dedicated to the loving memory of Gogo’s grandparents Georgia and Michail, with the album music being beautifully crafted by Gogo alongside Joel Notkonen on vocals, Taneli Jämsä and Jukka Jauhiainen on the guitars, Achilleas Papagrigoriou on drums, and guest Oskar Englund on bass.

Anemos sounds doomed, grim and pensive from the very first second, with the delicate keys by Gogo bringing a touch of finesse to the music while Achilleas dictates the song’s pace with his sluggish beats, resulting in a powerful Melodic Doom Metal aria that will darken your mind in a stunning way. The band continues their obscure, melancholic path in Elumia, where the bass by Oskar sounds menacing while Gogo embellishes the airwaves with her charming vocals, in paradox with the harsh roars by Joel; and featuring guest vocalist Alejandro Lotero of Exgenesis (and former vocalist for Aeonian Sorrow), Ashes and Death showcases another solid job done by Taneli and Jukka with their Doom Metal-infused riffs and solos. Her Torment is a massive, bold creation by the band where Achilleas crushes our souls with his heavy-as-hell drums, perfect for some slow, intense headbanging in total darkness, followed by the title-track Katara, where once again we’re treated to a gloomy, ethereal feast of Melodic Gothic and Doom Metal spearheaded by the stunning vocals by Gogo, keeping the album as melancholic and emotional as it can be. They managed to get even more doomed and somber in Forbidden Cry, with the guitars by Taneli and Jukka reverberating in great fashion accompanied by Gogo’s passionate vocal performance; whereas lastly, serene, lugubrious piano notes set the tone in Ikuinen Suru (or “eternal sorrow” from Finnish), presenting their trademark slow and steady beats, deep, touching vocal lines, and crying guitars.

“On a personal level, I’ve been through enough difficult changes in my life that it almost made it impossible to keep myself motivated to complete this album. I said several times that I don’t want to do this and I almost didn’t. What kept me going was the reason I started this band and the promise I gave to the grandmother I lost back in 2020 and said that ‘Katara’ album will be recorded in her memory and her husband’s memory too. It will be done for all the years I spent driving to those scary ‘Katara’ roads to go see them. It will be done for each song I wrote inside their empty house when they were gone, and I left to watch the walls and nothing more. On a music level, I think the band has also been through enough and faced the financial critical moments to where we had to take choices, a bit unusual for us, and find ways to make things happen without losing ourselves and our quality. The path to success is full of heavy stones and very lonely so we do what we can and continue writing music from our hearts,” commented Gogo about the album. Concert Review – Lucifer & Coven (Lee’s Palace, Toronto, ON, 11/24/2023)

How to warm up a chilly night in Toronto? Simply bring to the city a huge dosage of darkness, witchcraft, doom and the occult, courtesy of the iconic rock legends Coven and Lucifer.

OPENING ACT: Early Moods

If you were searching for a place to get warm this Friday in Toronto, which was a chilly one (although not too cold compared to other parts of the country), then Lee’s Palace was the place to be, offering you a high dosage of darkness, witchcraft, doom and the occult, courtesy of EARLY MOODS, COVEN and LUCIFER during their The Satanic Panic Tour 2023, brought to the city by the always amazing Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment. My buddy Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were there to celebrate all three bands, all delivering memorable performances to the crowd, resulting in a very entertaining night that put a huge smile on the faces of all attendees who have succumbed to the darkest side of music a long time ago.

The first band to hit the stage, precisely at 8pm, was Los Angeles, California-based Doom Metal newcomers EARLY MOODS, and I must say I was truly impressed by the high quality of the music crafted by those guys. Spearheaded by frontman Alberto Alcaraz, owner of a very powerful voice by the way, the band played a short but awesome setlist comprised of five songs from their 2022 self-titled debut album (available on their own BandCamp page as well as on Spotify), inspiring all concert goers to follow the band with some nice, nonstop headbanging. Of course, as a guy coming from the always warm Los Angeles, Alberto had to mention the fact the band was definitely not used to the cold weather in Toronto on Friday, but of course we all made sure the temperature inside Lee’s Palace was warm enough for such talented doomers, and if you want to know more about them simply click HERE and enjoy their first-class Doom Metal.

COVEN

After a quick break, and with the floor section of Lee’s Palace getting a lot busier with several fans wanting to be as close to the stage as possible, it was time for Chicago, Illinois’s own Satanic/Occult Rock institution COVEN to darken the skies and deliver a stunning show for all fans eager for the mesmerizing vocals by the band’s iconic frontwoman Esther “Jinx” Dawson, who kicked off the band’s black mass by leaving a coffin with a cryptic mask, a very nice touch to their show. Blending songs from their 1969 cult debut Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls with songs form their 1974 classic Blood On The Snow and their latest effort Jinx, released in 2013, it was a wild and fun journey back in time alongside Jinx and her henchmen Alex Kercheval on keyboards, Chris Wild on the guitars, Zayne Hutchison on bass, and Colin Oakley on drums, all undoubtedly born several years (or decades) after Jinx had already started rocking the world with her witchcraft-infused rock music.

As the great frontwoman and person that she is, Jinx made sure she properly introduced each member of the band to show everyone she’s not a solo artist, and that introduction to the boys was actually quite entertaining when she said for example that she met bassist Zayne Hutchison at a graveyard and simply “offered him a gig”. That’s how anyone should treat their band members, I must say. Back to the music, it was crystal clear that songs like Black Sabbath, the closing tune Blood on the Snow, and in special the fan-favorite Wicked Woman, were the most anticipated of their fantastic setlist, inspiring all fans to dance, headbang and raise their horns until the very last second. Jinx and her Coven are a brilliant act that’s worth every single penny to witness live, and hopefully we’ll see more of the trailblazers of Occult Rock sooner than later here in Toronto.

LUCIFER

It was already part 10pm when the main attraction of the night, Stockholm, Sweden-based Heavy/Doom Metal/Rock masters LUCIFER, delivered one of the coolest and most melodic performances the city of Toronto has seen in the past few years. From the very first notes of Ghosts to the last seconds of Reaper on Your Heels, the band formed of frontwoman Johanna Platow Andersson (aka Johanna Claudia Sadonis or Johanna Sadonis), guitarists Linus Björklund, Martin Nordin, and bassist Harald Göthblad, plus guest drummer Chad Walls of bands like Dislimb, The Living Fields and Postulated (as their drummer Nicke Andersson was apparently busy with his other band The Hellacopters in Europe), kicked some serious ass, playing all of their songs to perfection and, consequently, fully captivating the minds and the hearts of all fans at the venue.

My favorite songs from their relatively short setlist were by far Crucifix (I Burn for You) and Bring Me His Head, both from their 2021 highly acclaimed album Lucifer IV, plus their newest single A Coffin Has No Silver Lining, from their upcoming 2024 album Lucifer V (to be released in January), showing that we can expect another beast of an album by those Swedish rockers next year. Last but not least, just like what happens with almost all non-Canadian bands that come to Canada, the wonderful Johanna (and let me say it was nearly impossible NOT to focus on her during the entire show, because she’s simply perfect) told a quick story about when the band was crossing the border form the US to Canada. Not only Johanna said that she was still in her pajamas when the tour manager woke the entire band up right when they were about to cross the border, but she also said that the immigration officer at the border asked them the name of the band. She made a very funny face and said “Ahn… Lucifer…”, proving that’s not an easy name for a band to carry due to all bullshit most religious figures impose on our society. Well, in the end the band made it to Canada, kicked our asses in Toronto, and hopefully when Lucifer V is released we’ll experience another night of blasphemy, doom, witchcraft and the enchanting music by Lucifer in the city.

Album Review – Dark The Suns / Raven And The Nightsky (2023)

A three-piece act from Finland will embrace you with their fifth full-length album, taking you on a 50-minute journey through the realms of Death, Gothic and Doom Metal with a strong melodic vein.

Originally founded as a one-man project by Finnish vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mikko Ojala back in 2005, and after some lineup changes through the years plus a seven-year hiatus from 2013 until 2020, the now three-piece Melodic Death/Gothic Metal entity Dark The Suns has just unleashed upon us their fifth studio album, entitled Raven And The Nightsky, the follow-up to their 2020 effort Suru Raivosi Sydämeni Pimeydessä. Overflowing beautiful piano melodies and dark vocals, all carefully crafted by the aforementioned Mikko Ojala on vocals, guitars and drums, Jani Moilanen on the guitars and clean vocals, and Inka Ojala on bass and keyboards, Raven And The Nightsky will take you on a 50-minute journey through the realms of Death, Gothic and Doom Metal with a strong melodic vein highly recommended for admirers of the music by Insomnium, Draconian and Before the Dawn, just to name a few.

The heaviness of the drums by Mikko make a beautiful paradox with the whimsical keys by Inka in the opening tune Adamantine, sounding very detailed, multi-layered, and alternating between more metallic moments and ethereal passages, whereas in Phoenix they blend the more Gothic, obscure music by bands like HIM and Paradise Lost with their Melodic Death Metal sound, displaying a great job done by Mikko and Jani on the guitars. In Kun Aallot Kallioihin Murtuu, or “when the waves break on the rocks” from Finnish, a pounding, sinister intro gradually evolves into another atmospheric feast by the trio led by the delicate keys by Inka, who also delivers sheer heaviness through her low-tuned bass in an amazing fusion of Melodic Death Metal with contemporary Doom Metal; and they keep embellishing the airwaves in Aurora, with Mikko’s deep, darkened growls adding an extra touch of malignancy to the overall result. Then featuring Paavo Laapotti (Before the Dawn) as a guest vocalist, Raven is another solid creation where the guitars by Mikko and Jani walk hand in hand with Inka’s massive bass lines.

The second half of the album begins in a melancholic, pensive mode with the doomed Shadows Upon the Broken Hearts, showcasing sluggish beats, stylish keys and deep, obscure vocals, albeit a bit too generic if compared to the rest of the album. Swans of the Frozen Waters carries a beautiful name for a song, with Mikko and Jani slashing their guitars with tons of feeling and passion while Mikko hammers his drums nonstop in a fantastic display of Melodic Death and Doom Metal; followed by The Sea of Sorrow, perfect for headbanging alone in the dark, with Inka once again adding her share of finesse to the music through her keys while her bass sounds as heavy as it can be. We then face Under the Northern Lights, in the vein of the latest works by Finnish titans Insomnium, blending Death and Doom Metal with an ethereal atmosphere while Mikko steals the spotlight with his Stygian vocals and classic beats. And closing the album the trio offers us all the most obscure, grim of all songs, titled In Mist of the Night, where Blackened Doom elements invade all empty spaces in the air, not to mention the beauty in the guitars by Mikko and Jani is truly outstanding.

Album Review – Walking Corpse / Our Hands, Your Throat (2023)

Let these Swedish Grindcore beasts put their hands around your throat to the sound of their infernal sophomore opus.

It’s not too often that you come across a Grindcore album that gives you the kind of thrilling intensity that you’ve come to expect from this style of music, and at the same time there’s unpredictability in the writing which keeps you hooked. That’s exactly what you’ll get in Our Hands, Your Throat, the sophomore beast by Gothenburg, Sweden-based Grindcore animals Walking Corpse, following up on their 2020 debut The Fear Takes Hold. Displaying a sick artwork by Portuguese artist CVSPE (aka André Trindade), the new album by vocalist Henrik Blomqvist, guitarist and bassist Fredrik Rojas, and drummer and bassist Magnus Dahlin showcases the band’s most aggressive and innovative side, providing variations to break monotony and even predictability without compromising on the pure blistering, cathartic expression of Grindcore and, therefore, being highly recommended for fans of Rotten Sound, Fuck the Facts, Bathtub Shitter, Terra Builder, Spurn, Antigama, and Ernia, just to name a few.

Dreamflesh Navigator is absolutely devastating and evil from the very beginning, a demented Grindcore tune led by the unrelenting drums by Magnus while Henrik sounds inhumane on vocals. Then, Fredrik hammers his guitar in great fashion in Born in Hell, adding a touch of progressiveness and dementia to the trio’s already incendiary metal music, or in other words, it’s one of the most infuriated Grindcore songs you’ll listen to this year, followed by the title-track Our Hands, Your Throat, bringing forward more of their wicked sounds with Magnus crushing his drums like there’s no tomorrow in a lecture in extreme music and insanity by such talented group. And investing in a more melodic sonority with elements from Hardcore and Thrash Metal we have The Wheel, perfect for “dancing like a monkey” to the slashing riffage by Fredrik, whereas in Brainworm we face less than two minutes of pure violence spearheaded by the venomous, deranged roars and barks by Henrik.

Slowing things down a bit while also enhancing their obscurity, the trio fires the metallic Falling Through A World of Wounds, with their bass jabs hitting you hard in the face, and nonstop savagery and hatred flows from their riffs, bass and drums in Malediction, while Henrik continues to growl like a beast, followed by The Last Laugh, one of the most depraved songs of the album where Henrik sounds even more infuriated than before, resulting in a Swedish Grindcore party at its finest. Nothing Grows Here, the longest of all songs, will drag your soul to a realm of insanity and evil, where Magnus once again kicks some ass behind his drums supported by the razor-edged riffs by Fredrik. And how about one minute of pure aggression as the second to last song of the album? That’s what you’ll get in Forever Sleep, setting the tone for the obscure closing tune Eye of an Angry God, where Magnus dictates the song’s pace with his caustic beats while Fredrik will pierce your souls with his riffs, putting a brilliant ending to the album.

Album Review – Akouphenom / Death·Chaos·Void (2023)

A rising force of the Spanish Black and Death Metal scene will destroy your soul with their first full-length album, a hymn to the three ruling powers of existence – death, chaos and the void.

Embodying different influences from Doom Metal to Noise with the ambition to reflect absolute evil in their creations, A Coruña, Spain-based Blackened Death Metal horde Akouphenom (a name that comes from a twist on the word tinnitus, a real consequence of the band’s prolific live activities) is unleashing upon humanity their first full-length opus, titled Death·Chaos·Void. Mixed and mastered by Simón Da Silva at The Empty Hall Studio, Death·Chaos·Void is a hymn to the three ruling powers of existence – death, chaos and the void, leaders, kings and conquerors for all eternity, all carefully brought into being by DraGon on vocals and guitars, Pandemia also on the guitars, Korgüll on bass, and Prgich on drums. Furthemore, Death·Chaos·Void is a concept album divided into six chapters, which Akouphenom explain as a journey to unveil the truths of the Arkhé, the natural law, which is no more than an extension of the chaotic reality of the human condition.

The obscure, atmospheric intro Tritone Descent will drag your soul to the pits of the underworld before the band comes crushing our souls in Devour, offering our damned ears over eight minutes of a first-class fusion of Black and Death Metal where Prgich sounds demolishing with his blast beats accompanied by the demonic riffage by DraGon and Pandemia, flowing into the 12-minute beast titled Upper Cycle of Infinite Tails, a lecture in Blackened Death Metal where DraGon and Pandemia once again extract pure insanity and darkness form their guitars, while DraGon roars and vociferates nonstop for our total delight. And the song will haunt our souls until its very last second, being immediately followed by Flesh Sublimation, where the quartet keeps blasting their devilish sounds mercilessly, with Korgüll and Prgich making the ambience feel truly heavy, dense and grim armed with their heavy-as-hell kitchen, alternating between pounding, infernal moments and sheer Black Metal attack. The title-track Death·Chaos·Void begins in full force with another thrilling display of savagery by the band’s guitar duo, resulting in a hurricane of blackened, demonic sounds not recommended for the lighthearted, not to mention DraGon’s vocals sound insanely heavy and grim; whereas lastly, get ready for one final blast of the band’s infernal sounds in Incorporeal, trapping our minds in pitch black darkness to the sound of the demented drums by Prgich, therefore resulting in a twisted, vile conclusion to the album.

Concert Review – Katatonia (The Axis Club, Toronto, ON, 11/15/2023)

And the void in the skies of Toronto was filled with the progressive and atmospheric sounds by one of the most important names of the Swedish rock and metal scene.

OPENING ACTS: SOM and GOST

Good weather and great music was on tap this past Wednesday the 15th of November in the Little Italy section of Toronto. In the good company of my older brother Keith (myself on review duty and Keith on photography duty), we travelled to the Brass Taps Pizza Pub on College St. to have a bite to eat and meet up with friends and fellow Katatonia Fans Jason and Kim before the show. We timed it perfectly, finishing our meals and drinks at 7p.m., giving us enough time to stroll down the block enjoying the night air. The weather was pretty nice that evening.

Arriving at The Axis Club (formerly known as The Mod Club) located at 722 College St.W, it was time to check in and get set up. No complaints about the security at the front door, everybody seemed pretty chill and relaxed, letting us in with no hassle. My number one priority as soon as I get inside venues is to visit the merch tables and much to my disappointment there were no shirts in my size (3XL) but I’m used to that by now, it’s not the end of the world.  At least I was able to kop a patch and cd so I was happy. Ran into some Familiar faces as soon as I was inside and chatted with them until the first act got on. SOM, a band cobbled together from current and former members of such bands as Caspian, Junius and Constants. A band which I have never heard before. What can I say but that they were the very definition of shoegaze. I think everybody was in their own little worlds while SOM played. They went on at 7:30 to a 1/3 full venue with their brand of introspective shoegazing music. The crowd was a little subdued at first but as the venue started to fill up, the crowd started to come to life. Maybe it’s just me but shoegaze is not the most enlivening music to start a show with so it was slow going but eventually the audience got into it.

By the time the Darksynth band GOST got on stage I was at the back of the venue (the venue now about 2/3 full), having a nice conversation with the security guard at the entrance to the upstairs balcony and asked permission to go upstairs which he kindly let me and my brother do because we had credentials, otherwise it was off limits. The balcony sported some great views of the stage and crowd. All in all I’d have to say that The Axis Club is a decent little venue. The club has a good sound to it and a great low end.  As Gost was blasting out their dark horror themed electro dance grooves I could feel the bass in my chest at the back of the venue. As catchy as some of Gost’s music is, I’m not a dancer (can’t dance, won’t dance kind of guy) and I was not drinking enough to truly enjoy the buzz but Gost certainly does exude a fair amount of stage presence and charisma. Gost is a 2-man act of just a head-banging bass player and a multi-talented synth/drum machine player with a skull face mask. While listening to Gost’s set all I could think of was playing my Cyberpunk 2077 video game. Gost certainly livened up the mood. Funny story, during the Intermission my brother Keith (@lowereastsidephotography) got a selfie with the skull faced man himself James Lollar (aka Baalberith) outside the club inadvertently saving him from the clutches of an over excited fan, much to James’ appreciation.

KATATONIA

Finally the Band we all came to see, Stockholm Sweden’s own KATATONIA, on tour promoting their latest album Sky Void Of Stars. The crowd erupted as soon as the band took the stage, as if we were saving our energy just for them. What a great band Katatonia is. Even being a man down was no challenge for them as Anders Nyström was absent for some reason I could not discover. However, it didn’t affect their sound as they were as tight as ever and Jonas Renske had us eating from the palm of his hands. The crowd was loving it. Roger Öjersson’s leads were fantastic and were as crisp as a cloudless full moon winter night. The banter between Jonas and the crowd was great and he frequently aimed the mic towards the crowd for our response, which we did with gusto. Katatonia put on a stellar performance (no pun intended) even though Jonas’ mic started to act up a bit towards the end. No complaints from myself or anybody else there. This was my first time seeing Katatonia live but it damn sure won’t be my last. Toronto loves you, Katatonia.

Artists occasionally support causes through donations to organizations. With SAVAGE LANDS, Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren teamed up with his guitar-wielding friend Sylvain Demercastel to create their own US 501(c)3 non-profit.

Savage Lands raises money for reforestation & the creation of sanctuaries free of human destruction. Using their own royalties, donations and other fundraising efforts, the organization builds nature sanctuaries, establishes green zones and other land preservation projects. They partner with other non-profits, scientists and forest engineers, as well as Decibel Magazine and Season of Mist.
