Formed in the distant year of 1991 in the land of ice and snow, Helsinki, Finland-based Black/Doom Metal horde Barathrum needs no introduction, remaining as one of Finland’s very first Black Metal bands and, more importantly, one of the longest-running. Now seven years after the release of their 2017 beast Fanatiko, the band comprised of Demonos Sova on vocals, Ruttokieli on lead guitars, Nuklear Tormentörr on bass, and Vendetta on drums returns in full force with their tenth studio album, the highly anticipated metal attack titled Überkill. A no shenanigans, in-your-face blast of extreme music, Überkill proves that the Finns are, above all, a very great Heavy Metal band, just one that’s jet-black, ass-kicking, and bass-driven as fuck. Simple-yet-sublime pleasures, now and forever. Again, Barathrum are eternal!
Death by Steel is absolutely dark and evil from the very first second, with the dirty riffs by Ruttokieli infesting the atmosphere before Demonos Sova attacks with his demonic gnarls; and blending the obscurity of Black Metal with Hardcore and Rock N’ Roll, the band offers the headbanging Mountain of Bones, led by the classic drumming by Vendetta, whereas a wicked intro gradually morphs into the harsh, metallic feast titled Spark Plugs of Purgatory, again with Demonos Sova crushing our damned souls with his goblin-like vociferations. More of their infernal Punk Rock-infused riffs will penetrate deep inside your dirty mind in Black Magick Rites, while Nuklear Tormentörr and Vendetta craft a rumbling base with their respective bass and drums, and investing in a much darker sound we have Ritual Murder, with Nuklear Tormentörr hammering his bass manically until the music evolves into an absolute chaotic vibe perfect for slamming into the pit.
White Red Black and Pale is another rock and metal extravaganza by those Finnish blasphemers led by the venomous gnarls by Demonos Sova, sounding slow, steady and evil from start to finish, followed by Denial of God, a beautiful name for another impious tune by Barathrum, offering our putrid ears an overdose of harsh sounds while Vendetta pounds his drums in the name of old school Black and Thrash Metal. It’s then time for seven minutes of sheer obscurity and blasphemy in the form of Dark Sorceress, where the cryptic, ritualistic vocals by Demonos Sova match flawlessly with the Doom Metal-inspired sounds blasted by his bandmates, and closing the album we’re treated to the venomous sounds of the title-track Überkill, oozing Barathrum from the very first second, with Ruttokieli stealing the spotlight armed with his wicked, scorching riffs.
Evil has many forms as people like to say, and after listening to Überkill you’ll quickly realize Barathrum are definitely one of the manifestations of everything that’s immoral, sinful and blasphemous. An expression in Latin meaning “to rise up to attack”, Adorior are a Black and Death Metal beast formed in 1994 in London, England that has always been the essence and the epitome of Extreme Heavy Metal. Now, after nearly two decades, this avalanche of fist-fucking, speed-thrashing, pitch-black death is about to bury the conformist and comfortable dreamland of nowadays domesticated metal culture with their new album titled Bleed on My Teeth, a nightmare absolute, the true nemesis of pseudo-rebellious Heavy Metal. Recorded and mixed by Greg Chandler at Priory Recording Studios, mastered by Patrick Engel at Temple of Disharmony, and displaying a demonic artwork by Belial NecroArts, the new opus by vocalist Jaded Lungs, guitarists T. Slutsodomizer and S. Assassinator, bassist R.C., and drummer D. Molestör has a lot of dirt under its fingernails, but it finally reanimates the corpse of mind-fucking, repulsive and dangerous music serving the devil, without giving an inch to newer, shitty genre definitions.
Like a train directly from hell the quintet arrives in full force in Begrime Judas, blending Black and Death Metal with endless sulfur and rebelliousness led by the she-demon vocals by Jaded Lungs, not to mention its scorching thrashing riffs; and the rumbling bass by R.C. kicks off the also demented Ophidian Strike, with the galloping drums by D. Molestör inspiring us all to bang our heads nonstop before exploding into a demented feast of old school Black Metal. Once again adding an endless amount of Thrash Metal and Hardcore elements to their core essence we’re treated to L.O.T.P. – Vomit Vomit Vomit Bastard, while D. Molestör crushes his drums in the most visceral Death Metal way imaginable, whereas in Precipice of Fire the band offers more of the guitar madness blasted by T. Slutsodomizer and S. Assassinator, resulting in an infernal metal attack that sounds like it was taken directly from the 80’s.
Jaded Lungs is a beast incarnate in the seven-minute aria of hell titled Sips of Sarin, where her bandmates blast their sonic weapons in the name of evil, allowing her to scream and gnarl with tons of despair, therefore turning it into one of the best moments of the album. It’s quite interesting how all of their songs go beyond the five or six minute mark, and Scavengers of Vengeance couldn’t have been any different than that, sounding insane from start to finish thanks to the slashing riffage by the band’s guitar duo, whereas the second to last blast of old school blasphemy by Adorior is entitled Moment of Mania, with Jaded Lungs gnarling rabidly amidst a hurricane of chaotic, demented sounds blasted by her bandmates, and with the sound of their riffs being a thing of beauty. Lastly, let’s all face almost seven minutes of impious, sulfurous Death and Thrash Metal made in the UK in the title-track Bleed on My Teeth, with D. Molestör sounding ruthless on drums and, consequently, putting a beyond infernal conclusion to the band’s blackened death and thrash attack.
Bleed on my Teeth is a revelation for the black-hearted survivors of this diseased and treacherous world, and you will certainly feel this record like it has been tattooed into your bones, but if you don’t, then fuck off and pray that you never will. We live in dark times; times of war, pandemics, grief and horror. These are the days of division, where we turn against each other in politically driven hatred and against ourselves, choking on a social media diet of self-loathing and isolation. Hailing from Preston, a city in Lancashire, northern England, UK’s resolute and relentless kings of Thrash Metal, Solitary, have tapped into the thick, black blood that pulses sluggishly through the fat and filth congested veins of society, culminating with the birth of their caustic new album titled Embrace The Darkness, the follow-up to their 2020 beast The Truth Behind the Lies. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Simon Efemey at Headline Music Studios, and embraced by a sick artwork by Koot (which would look amazing as a tattoo), the new beast by Richard Sherrington on vocals and rhythm guitar, Andy Mellor on lead guitar, Gareth Harrop on bass, and Roy Miller on drums is their hymn to a dying world, their soundtrack to the end of days.
The intro III.XXIII.MMXX offers a modern-day, visceral and acid start that will darken the skies before Solitary come crushing our damned souls in the title-track Embrace the Darkness, with Richard already roaring manically from the bottom of his blackened heart supported by the hammering drums by Roy and an overdose of caustic riffs. It’s then pedal to the metal to the sound of the infuriated Settle Scores the Old Way, a sharp, ruthless Thrash Metal attack perfect for a good brawl at the pub, whereas Richard and Andy continue to extract total chaos and heaviness from their axes in Virtues, an old school thrashing hurricane that will put you to headbang like a beast. And the band once again speeds things up and delivers a demolishing sound in Bury It Now, another amazing display of their undisputed Thrash Metal where their scorching riffs and rumbling bass match perfectly with the venomous vocals by Richard.
The circle pit keeps moving fast and wildly in Beneath the Surface, with the hammering drums by Roy and the low-tuned, massive bass lines by Gareth building a solid foundation for the harsh vociferations by Richard; and the band shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, offering more of their violent and strident music in the form of The Disappeared, with Richard and Andy delivering an endless dosage of fury through their riffs. Then a Slayer-inspired riff will crush your damned skull to pieces in Section 21, where the band showcases their trademark sonority originally crafted back in the 90’s without sounding outdated or boring at all, followed by Filtering Hindsight, the last song of the digital version of the album which will inspire you to break your neck headbanging together with Solitary, although it lacks the same demented energy of the rest of the album. Furthermore, if you go for the vinyl edition of the album you’ll be treated to the bonus song Divided And Demented, absolutely worth every penny invested in the vinyl version as it’s pure British thrash spearheaded by the infernal growling by Richard; whereas if you buy the CD version you’ll get their cover version for The Exploited’s hit Beat the Bastards (check the official live video by The Exploited for the original song HERE), and as you can already imagine Solitary simply nailed it with their undisputed, electrifying thrashing twist.

Like a lumbering, ferocious beast awoken from a centuries-long slumber, the Blackened Thrash Metal behemoth known as Demiseremerged from the primordial ooze of the South Carolina metal scene in 2017, unleashing their debut effort Through the Gate Eternal back in 2021. Now in 2024 the band formed of Demiser the Demiser on occult liturgic blasphemy (vocals), Gravepisser on six-stringed satanic fukklord (guitars), Phallomancer on abysmal rhythm of death (guitars), Defiler on dismal baritone curator (bass), and Infestor on purveyor of percussive bile (drums) brings forward their sophomore opus, titled Slave to the Scythe, a devastatingly intense slab of work, an aural harbinger of hellish intent that sees the band blend 80’s Thrash Metal, first-wave Black Metal, Death Metal and a healthy dose of NWOBHM. Recorded by Chase McGuckin at Seaboard Recording Studio, and displaying a demonic artwork by Lucas Ruggieri, Slave to the Scythe is the work of a band of men determined to destroy everything in their path. Musically, of course.
Infestor kicks off the band’s depraved party in Feast, a devastating Death and Thrash Metal tune where Demiser the Demiser gnarls nonstop in the name of evil; whereas Gravepisser and Phallomancer deliver sheer rage through their caustic riffs in the title-track Slave to the Scythe, another fast-paced, circle pit catalyst by the quintet. Then inspired by other amazing underground bands like Midnight, it’s time for Defiler and Infestor to make the earth shake in Carbureted Speed, offering Demiser the Demiser exactly what he needs to roar manically in this Punk Rock-infused thrashing extravaganza, and it’s pedal to the metal with the band’s guitar duo showing no mercy for our souls in Phallomancer the Phallomancer, slashing their axes like there’s no tomorrow.
After that we have a serene, acoustic Interlude, working as the calm before the storm titled Total Demise, where Infestor speeds things up with his demented beats and fills, inviting us all to slam into the mosh pit like true metal maniacs. Their thrashing feast with hints of Death Metal goes on in full force in Hell Is Full of Fire, with Demiser the Demiser and Infestor sounding ruthless armed with their respective roars and beats, and those demonic beasts will carve their teeth deep inside your flesh in Infernal Bust, offering more of their rumbling bass and drums courtesy of Defiler and Infestor, while Demiser the Demiser continues to vociferate like a demented creature of darkness. Finally, we face In Nomine Baphomet, the most epic and detailed of all songs, showcasing layers of sulfur, wrath and aggression by such an amazing name of the underground where all band members are on fire during the whole song, with Infestor once again stealing the show with his fusion of Black, Thrash and Death Metal beats and fills, putting a darkly and insanely epic finale to the album.
The band’s influences include the likes of Venom, Bathory, Slayer, Motörhead, and Deströyer 666, plus movies like Terminator 2, Commando, and Predator (or pretty much anything Arnold Schwarzenegger, to be fair), with the overarching themes on Slave to the Scythe being essentially “hell, fire and hellfire.” There are no ballads, no love songs, just plain devilish music for devilish people that was largely written on the road, and if you want to feel that fire burning your putrid body for all eternity you can start following the band on Facebook and on Instagram, stream their music on Spotify, and obviously purchase a copy of the excellent Slave to the Scythe from their own BandCamp page or from the Blacklight Media Records’ webstore. Sons of Odin, can you hear the call of our metal lady of this month of September? If your answer is yes, then I’m sure you’ll have a very good time here on The Headbanging Moose with our humble tribute to Corinne Cardinal, also known as Korrinn or Crook, a multi-talented singer, voice actor and vocal coach who’s making a name for herself in the Canadian scene as the frontwoman for Montreal, Quebec-based Melodic Black/Folk Metal horde Valfreya, proudly waving the flag of Québécois metal high in the sky wherever she goes and hypnotizing us all with both her clean and guttural vocals. She takes no prisoners in her quest for heavy music, leading Valfreya into glory ride, and of course you’re more than invited to stand side by side with Corinne and her henchmen in the battlefield after knowing a little bit more about her life and career.
Born on August 20, 1986 in the charming city of Montreal, Quebec, in Canada, Corinne is not just the founder, main composer and vocalist of Valfreya, but she’s also a voice actor for La Fabrique de Monstres (or The Monster Factory), and a singer for the Growlers Choir, just like one of our most recent metal ladies Maude Théberge, showing how united the Québécois scene is. Not only that, she has also studied classical singing and instrumental composition, does graphic design, and of course she applies all those elements to her work with Valfreya. Her talent seems to be infinite, which translates into first-class heavy music when a new Valfreya album is unleashed upon humanity for our total delight.
After exploring choir singing during her formative years, Corinne, who’s a mezzo-soprano, undertook her studies by enrolling at Cégep Saint-Laurent and obtained her college degree in classical singing in 2007, perfecting her instrument with many teachers between 2007 to 2015 like Cécile Gendron, Mark Pedrotti, Christine Lemelin and Colette Boky, and pursuing a bachelor’s degree at UQAM in music (artistic performance concentration) in 2015. During her studies there, she developed a varied lyric repertoire and sings in more than eight different languages (Russian, Czech, German, Italian, Latin, Catalan, French and English), obtaining her diploma in December 2018. Finally, in 2020 she obtained her Estill Voice Training certificates one and two, and if you have no idea what that means, this course pertains to parts of the anatomy singers can exercise conscious control on to modify their sound.
After founding Valfreya back in 2009, merging the metal genre with classical and folk, Corinne started to develop different vocal techniques, matching guttural singing with opera and pop, which culminated with her joining the aforementioned Growlers Choir back in 2019, plus collaborations with many artists as a performer or composer the likes of Léa Dupuis, Augury, and Jeff Marcoux. That expertise also opened several doors to vocal acting out of specialized fields into voices for creatures and monsters in video games and film, including Resident Evil 7 (Capcom), Helix Season 1 (Syfy), Soul Blade (Namco, Project Soul), Rainbow Six Siege: Operation Chimera (Ubisoft), Tomb Raider: Shadow of the Tomb (Eidos Montréal), and Guardians of the Galaxy (Eidos), and also led to her founding in 2019 La Fabrique de Monstres alongside Sébastien Croteau and Jeffrey MacDermott, working in the sound design of hundreds of monsters and creatures over twenty or so video games, films and television series.
Corinne started studying for her musicologist’s master’s degree at Université de Montréal in 2020, wishing to analyze vocal techniques in metal music, precisely to identify the process of vocal production permitting control on specific structures of the vocal apparatus linked to guttural metal singing, with her ultimate goal being to produce the first pedagogical treaty on metal singing in English and French. In addition, Corinne is also a member of diverse research groups such as OICRM and ACTOR Project, and one of the rare vocal coaches who’s able to teach metal singing (both growl and fry) in Quebec.
As already mentioned, Corinne founded Melodic Black/Folk Metal horde Valfreya back in February 2009 in Montreal, with the band’s name being influenced by one of the names of Óðinn, Valföður (Old Icelandic for “Father of the Slain”) and Freyja, the Vanic deity, sister of Freyr. Valfreya deals with themes such as Norse mythology, Pagan gods, life, death, and legends, having released their debut EP First Chronicles in 2010, followed by their first full-length album Path to Eternity in 2012, the EP Acoustic Chronicles in 2013, and the full-length albums Promised Land, in 2017, and more recently Dawn of Reckoning, earlier this year, not to mention the band was also feature in the 2011 Galy Records compilation Trois-Rivières Metalfest 11 with the song Deity’s Grace. The band currently formed of our metallic diva Corinne on vocals together with Graz’zt and Erik on the guitars, Abhor on bass, Dommar on drums, and Eva Doucet De Leon on the violin has already played hundreds of concerts across Canada and the United States, and if you want to enjoy their amazing music you can find all of their releases on BandCamp, on Spotify, or by clicking HERE.

Corinne is much more than just the band’s frontwoman, having also been responsible for the music, lyrics, arrangements, artwork and layout in their 2012 album Path to Eternity, the artwork, layout, cover art and lyrics in their 2017 album Promised Land, and the layout in their most recent album Dawn of Reckoning. Besides her career with Valfreya, Corinne also played keyboards and did backing vocals between 2008 and 2010 for a Montreal, Quebec-based Melodic Black Metal band named Vehemal, albeit she didn’t record anything official with the band; and did the live vocals with Canadian Progressive/Experimental Death Metal band Bookakee a few years ago. She can also be seen as a guest musician for a few interesting bands in the past few years, as for example doing additional vocals in the song Impending Apocalypse, from the 2020 EP Repaying Evil with Evil, by Canadian Death/Thrash Metal/Deathcore musician Jeff Marcoux; vocals in the 2017 single La pluie noire, by Canadian Black/Doom Metal band Lacrimae Mortalium; and more recently additional vocals in the songs Welcome, Immuration and Resilience, from the 2023 album Maladaptive Daydreaming, by Canadian Melodic Death/Gothic Metal band Sanguine Glacialis. Moreover, she was also responsible for the layout in the 2012 EP Deviated Inner Spectrum, by Canadian Technical/Melodic Death Metal act Pronostic, under the curious moniker of “Crapule”.
Lastly, as pretty much any metal lady hailing from Canada, Corinne is crazy for animals, having several pets from different species. For instance, in one of her interviews during the pandemic, she said she had at that time three fishes named Super Nova, Galaxy and Comet, five rats named Wicca, Gandalf the White, Zelda, Bouda and Titite (which means Tiny-tiny), and also a cat named Saroumine. As you might have already notice, the inspirations she takes for the music by Valfreya also have an impact on the names of her pets, which in my opinion is simply awesome. She mentioned she enjoys taking her rats to places like stores, parties, family reunions, chilling with friends, and so on, also saying that especially during the pandemic all of her pets brought a lot of joy and comfort as she couldn’t live in an empty house. She also said that all of her pets don’t seem to care about the fact she practices her music at home, and that whenever she’s on tour with Valfreya, it’s either her boyfriend or her sister who usually takes care of them for her. Side A of the first vinyl starts way back in 1982 with Strangers, the opening track of the self-titled album by Messendger, presenting a great fusion of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock where the trio delivers fierce riffs and beats, and with their vocal lines also sounding electrifying; followed by Lucifers Eyes, by Fortnox, another beast from 1982 offering us all a powerful blast of old school Hard Rock. Fast forward a few years to 1990 and we face the Power/Thrash Metal by Atlanta’s own Ghost Story, with the song What Few Even Dare, from their 1990 demo The Image and the Reality, also presenting hints of Death and Speed Metal in its riffs and drums, whereas in 1988 a Thrash Metal band form Georgia called Necropolis released the album Contemplating Slaughter, and from that album we have the song Waters of Lathe, showcasing the amazing raspy vocals by Keith Charron.
It’s time to kick off side B of vinyl number one with Rock You, by MX, another old Heavy Metal/Hard Rock outfit from Georgia from the early 80’s, delivering sheer adrenaline and electricity through their fiery riffs and unrelenting attitude, and let’s continue our journey though the 80’s with Sinister Angel and the song Street Light Glamour, from their 1984 self-titled EP, where you can sense elements from early Judas Priest in their sound as well as harsher thrash and death nuances. Then in 1991 the Augusta, Georgia-based Heavy/Power Metal band Legion released the album Darkness, and from that album comes Evil Mind, with a sensational vocal performance by Loy Mitcham, followed by Reflected Fear, by Kinetic Dissent, more inclined to classic Thrash Metal, a song from their 1987 demo The Fall of Individualism, bringing forward an amazing guitar work by Stephen Danyo. In the song Til Death Do Us Part, from the 1989 demo Overloaded, by Dark Overlord, the music exhales the same rebelliousness from the early days of Exodus, or in other words, it’s a fantastic option to slam into the pit like a true metalhead, while Metal Merchants, from the 1985 cult album Tales of Terror, by Hallows Eve, is an explosion of Thrash and Speed Metal led by frontman Stacy Andersen, also perfect for some sick mosh pits.
Unblessed, one of the first Death Metal bands from Georgia, kicks off side A of the second vinyl with When it Bleeds it Pours, from their 1998 demo, already blasting that harsh, vicious sound that became a staple in today’s Death Metal scene, whereas Sixteenth Chamber, released in the 1995 demo Oh Come All Ye Faithful… Tonight We Feast, by Lestregus Nosferatus, presents those truly evil vocals we love in extreme music, not to mention the heaviness of their riffs. We’re then treated to Pray to Death, by ROT, from the 1990 demo Diabolus (The Unholy Rot), offering our putrid ears more of Atlanta’s own blend of classic Death Metal to inspire us all for some vigorous headbanging, followed by Avulsion with the song Inexorable Suffering, from their 1994 demo of the same name, enhancing the city’s ferocity in the scene, sounding slow, evil and, therefore, definitely not recommended for the lighthearted. Gates Of Emptiness, from the 1997 demo Twilight Eternal, by Dawn of Orion, is an overdose of classic Death Metal, with the harsh vociferations by Myke Jamison sounding insane, and things get even darker in Metaphorical Ithaca, by Haborym (a Hebrew synonym for Satan), mixing Black and Death Metal in an utterly demonic chant from their only demo released in 1995.
Finally, side B of the second vinyl brings to us all The Righteous Shall Fall, by Tragic Demise, displaying one of the most primeval sounds of the entire compilation, sounding like creatures arising form the pits of the underworld while again showcasing classic Death Metal beats for our total delight. Then the band Demoncy blasts a more Black Metal-inspired sound in Winter Bliss, from their 1999 album Joined in Darkness, with their Stygian, cryptic harsh vocals and a beyond raw sound quality giving it a more-than-infernal vibe. Necroflesh then offers a brutal slab of old school Death Metal in Scream, from their 1997 demo, where their guitars sound as caustic and sharp as possible; followed by the song Synthesis of Rebirth, taken from the 1996 demo of the same name by Procostimus, another band blending Death and Black Metal in their music where Greg King shows no mercy for our souls with his grim vocals and drums. Darkened Skies, the second band deeply rooted in old school Black Metal, delivers their share of obscurity and evil to the masses like a creature lurking in the dark in Reign of Radulescu, before Vastion, one of the first Technical Death Metal bands from Atlanta, crushes us all like insects in Ensuring Your Death, from their 2000 album Closed Eyes to Nothing, sounding absolutely wild and bestial until the very last second.

This is heavy music, this is Atlanta, and I honestly can’t wait for the next volume in this beautiful tribute to one of the most prolific scenes of the North American underground.

Let the gallows rise to the sound of the infernal debut by one of the must-see new names of the Finnish extreme music scene.
Featuring eight tracks in less than 30 minutes, following a thematic route from steady and thrashy riffing to manic blackened brutality where death is always present, the pulverizing Gallows Rise, the debut album by Tampere, Finland-based Blackened Death/Thrash Metal five-piece unit Buryfication, will undoubtedly crush your soul with its undisputed violence and heaviness. Recorded by Mikko Koskinen, mixed by Matti Mäkelä, and mastered by Jon Sjolin at Experitone, Gallows Rise is a precious gem of the underground carefully brought into being by frontman Marko Ala-Kleme, guitarists Tommi Kolehmainen and Henri Kyllästinen, bassist Pasi Bunda, and drummer Mikko Koskinen, paving a very exciting path ahead of such an amazing up-and coming band.
Get ready to be crushed like a putrid insect already in the opener The Plague, a demented creation by the band where Marko’s deep guttural walks hand in hand with the razor-edged, evil riffs by Tommi and Henri, and continuing to destroy everything and everyone that dares to cross their path we have Supreme Being, where Mikko is ruthless with his classic Death Metal beats and fills, supported by the rumbling bass by Pasi. An overdose of brutality, gore and violence flows from all instruments in the headbanging Human Cattle, with the guitars by Tommi and Henri exhaling sulfur, therefore inviting us all to slam into the circle pit like demonic creatures; and while Cannibal Corpse have the classic “Make Them Suffer”, those Finnish metallers offer us all the just as infernal Let Them Suffer, a lecture in modern-day Death Metal led by the inhumane growls by Marko, not to mention the song’s wicked guitar solos.
It’s then pedal to the metal as the band doesn’t have time to fool around, delivering a visceral onrush of Blackened Death Metal titled Year Zero where Mikko’s blast beats match perfectly with the devilish roaring by Marko, and inspired by the most demented names of the scene including Cannibal Corpse, Disloyal, Diabolizer and Immolation, the title-track Gallows Rise will hit you hard in the head to the striking riffs and solos by the band’s dynamic guitar duo. The quintet still has a lot of hellish fire to burn in Trails of Blood, a massive, dense and evil composition showcasing Marko’s trademark roars and the always killer drumming by Mikko; whereas featuring guest vocals by Matti Mäkelä of Corpsessed, closing this excellent album of sheer brutality we’re treated to Haunted, Enslaved, Devoured, with all riffs and solos adding an extra touch of aggression and insanity to their music, resulting in a stunning aria of violence.

Produced and mixed by Miguel A. Riutort at Psychosomatic Studio, with vocals produced by Israel Ramos at Dante Music Studios, mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios, and displaying a classic artwork by Colombian artist Felipe Machado Franco, the new album by vocalist Victor Alcalá “Kendoru”, guitarists Victor V. A Sky Full Of Ghosts is another classic Power Metal tune made in Europe, with Rubén once again dictating the pace with his fierce and intricate beats, whereas a calm and serene start suddenly explodes into another powerful sonority in Twilight Of The Heroes, offering our ears fast-paced, no-shenanigans metal music led by the classic vocals by Kendoru. Then featuring guest vocalist Elisa C. Martín (Hamka, Dark Moor), Forever is a more straightforward Power Metal tune by those Spanish rockers, with the guitars by Victor and Alas being nicely supported by the rumbling kitchen by Carlos and Rubén, followed by Pistols At Dawn, a galloping composition that doesn’t add much to the album, although it still brings forward the band’s solid instrumental pieces and vocal lines. Back to a more vibrant, breathtaking sound it’s time for Purple & Green, where the riffage by the band’s guitar duo matches perfectly with the unstoppable beats by Rubén; and almost nine minutes of epic passages, thunderous bass lines, crushing drums and striking vocals are offered to us all in The Island, with Victor and Alas speeding things up with their ass-kicking riffs, blending all their influences the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Stratovarius and so on. Last but not least, the band brings forward an avalanche of classic Power Metal with tons of Melodic Metal nuances in Not Over, featuring guest vocals by Herbie Langhans (Steel Rhino, The Lightbringer of Sweden), putting a beyond electrifying ending to the album.

The city of Toronto was expecting total hell this Sunday night, and that’s exactly what we got with Exciter and Midnight, crowning a beyond successful tour in the name of our beloved underground extreme music.
It was definitely one of the hottest nights of the entire summer this past Sunday in Toronto, and things got even hotter with an endless dosage of depravity, heaviness, rebelliousness, circle pits, crowd surfing, Rock N’ Roll, Heavy, Thrash and Speed Metal at the always fun Lee’s Palace, when DEADWOLFF, WRAITH, MIDNIGHT and EXCITER brought to the city the very last stop of their undisputed Feel The Evil Like a Knife North American Tour 2024, courtesy of Noel Peters of Inertia Entertainment, crowning a beyond successful tour with a wild and vibrant show for all lovers of heavy music. Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi and I were of course invited to join the party, and let me tell you that all bands were absolutely incredible from start to finish, and the fact that the show was in the middle of a long weekend (due to Civic Holiday in Ontario) inspired all concert goers to go mental during the whole night, as they had a full Monday to recover after such a hurricane of insanity blasted by those amazing bands.
Precisely at 8pm, the very first band of the night, Toronto’s own Heavy Metal/Hard Rock trio DEADWOLFF, kicked off their high-octane, no shenanigans concert, with Tommy Wolffe, Bobby Deuce and Patrick Woodall paying a tribute to all things Rock N’ Roll by delivering a hard-hitting performance that put everyone already at Lee’s Palace to dance, bang their heads and raise their horns together with those talented boys. Songs like Locked and Loaded, Homeward Bound, Pedal to the Metal, Six to Midnight and Heavy Rock n’ Roll, all from their 2023 debut Heavy Rock n’ Roll (available on BandCamp and on Spotify) sounded fantastic live, offering an insane amount of electricity and power to everyone at the venue and, consequently, leaving us all eager for the next time Deadwolff kicks some ass on the stages of Toronto. If Deadwolff were pure Rock N’ Roll, Indiana’s own Blackened Speed/Thrash Metal act WRAITH were absolute evil, destroying everything and everyone that dared to cross their path in Toronto this Sunday night. The band formed of Matt Sokol on vocals and guitars, Jason Schultz also on the guitars, Chris Petkus on bass and Mike Szymendera on drums was ruthless, demonic and heavy-as-hell during their impressive performance, igniting some of the sickest circle pits of the entire night (and of the entire year, to be honest), also inspiring tons of fans to do some wild, nonstop crowd surfing and stage diving. Their brand new album Fueled by Fear is simply demented, and the songs Asylum and Fueled by Fear, plus their old material including Cloaked in Black, Absolute Power, and my favorite of the night, Devil’s Hour, sounded pulverizing live. Finally after so many years I was able to witness Cleveland, Ohio-based Black/Speed Metal cult machine MIDNIGHT live for the first time ever, and let me tell you that I got exactly what I was expecting, and that was total hell. Promoting their insane new album Hellish Expectations, the band spearheaded by the iconic beast Athenar kicked some serious ass on stage this Sunday, sounding as blasphemous, depraved acid and heavy as humanly possible, therefore putting a huge smile on the faces of all fans who were having an amazing time inside the circle pits and doing some crowd surfing and stage diving as well. One of the stage divers was Adermo von Pitlord, vocalist for the underground Toronto band Profligator, and if you know the guy you’ll understand when I saw there were at least seven deaths (and counting) after he jumped from the stage into the crowd. All songs sounded brilliant, including Lust Filth and Sleaze, Black Rock’n’Roll, Szex Witchery, and new tunes like Expect Total Hell and Nuclear Savior (all available on BandCamp and on Spotify), and close to the end of Unholy and Rotten all hell broke loose with multiple musicians from the other bands taking over the stage and instruments, showing how much fun everybody was having during one of the craziest shows ever. Now I want to see Midnight live again, and again, and again.

Last but certainly not least, it was time for Ottawa’s own Speed Metal institution EXCITER to put on the fourth flawless performance of the night, proving why those veterans have become and will always be a reference in Canadian extreme music. Spearheaded by the unparalleled Dan Beehler on vocals and drums, alongside Daniel Dekay on the guitars and Allan Johnson on bass, the trio crushed our damned souls with their electrifying fusion of speed and heaviness, with songs like Stand Up and Fight, Heavy Metal Maniac and Violence & Force taking us all back in time to the glorious days of Thrash and Speed Metal. Also, I gotta say that playing Judas Priest’s classic “Exciter” on speakers before their show was not only an amazing warmup, but also a beautiful tribute to the Metal Gods, making me and several other fans even more excited to the show (pun intended), which resulted in more circle pit action, of course. Two of the most important bands of the current metal scene crushed the city of London, Canada in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their most-acclaimed albums to date.
What a wild and busy day and night it was this Wednesday, when the cozy Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario hosted one of the most insane tours of the year, Ashes of Leviathan Tour 2024, featuring nothing more, nothing less than MALEVOLENCE, KERRY KING, MASTODON and LAMB OF GOD. It was a rough 2-hour drive for me to get to London in time for the shows, but it was absolutely worth it as this tour is simply celebrating the 20th anniversary of two seminal releases, Lamb of God’s biggest-selling album Ashes of the Wake and Mastodon’s acclaimed sophomore album Leviathan, which were both released on August 31, 2004. My friend Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi was also there and was dying to photograph his favorite band of all time, Lamb of God, for the first time in his career; however, no idea why, he only got the approval for the first band, Malevolence, something we’ve never seen happening before nor any of our friends, which is why the only good photos of this review are for Malevolence. Sorry about that.
The first band to hit the stage was Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England-based Groove Metal/Metalcore piece MALEVOLENCE, and let me tell you those guys kicked some serious ass, working as the perfect warmup for the devastation that was about to come. Still promoting their 2022 album Malicious Intent, the band formed of Alex Taylor, Joshua Baines, Konan Hall, Wilkie Robinson and Charlie Thorpe put everyone at Budweiser Gardens to slam into the pit, turning up the heat on an already extremely hot day in the city. I just wish they had more time to play, and that the start of the show wasn’t so early, before 6pm, which impacted in a negative way the amount of people already inside the venue for their show.

It wasn’t even 7pm when Los Angeles, California’s one and only Thrash Metal icon KERRY KING and his crew took the stage of Budweiser Gardens by storm with their blood red (and sometimes dark blue) stage, endless heaviness, and a strong will to crush everything and everyone that dared to cross their path on Wednesday night. Playing songs from his insane debut solo album From Hell I Rise including Where I Reign and Idle Hands, plus the Slayer all-time classics Raining Blood and Black Magic, Mr. Kerry King was absolutely ruthless during his short but extremely destructive set, supported by the soaring vocals by Death Angel’s frontman Mark Osegueda and also by his Slayer buddy Paul Bostaph on drums, driving fans crazy and igniting some demented mosh pits for the delight of lovers of some good circle pit action. Once again, I really wish his setlist was a bit longer, maybe with a couple more songs from his album or from Slayer, but in the end he certainly proved there’s life outside Slayer as his solo material sounds incredible both in studio and on stage, and you can enjoy Kerry’s wicked music on Spotify, of course, or click HERE for all things surrounding one of the greatest guitarist in the history of Thrash Metal.

It was only 8pm when Atlanta, Georgia Progressive/Sludge Metal beast MASTODON, one of the main attractions of the night (and it’s funny because there was still light outside the venue), kicked off their more-than-special set based on their 2004 album Leviathan, playing the entire album from the very first song, the breathtaking Blood and Thunder, until Joseph Merrick, all supported by a beautiful stage with lots of fire, crazy background images, and a lot of smoke too. Troy Sanders, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor were insane as usual, mastering the art of their instruments for our total delectation, therefore receiving a wild and huge ovation form the fans at Budweiser Gardens. The overall sound was a bit muffled to my liking, but nothing that could stop the quartet form putting on a fantastic show, taking us all back 20 years with one of the most important metal albums of the past two decades. There was even time for a nice encore with the songs More Than I Could Chew, Circle of Cysquatch and Steambreather, and after that Brann took some time to thank everyone and to say how insane it is to be on this tour with Lamb of God, both celebrating 20 years of their masterpieces, also taking into account the fact they’ve been friends for all that time too. Mastodon always deliver, and hopefully we’ll see them celebrating 30, 40, 50 years and so on of the great Leviathan.

After a short break, where fans took the time to grab a few final beers and whatever was left from the merch booths, it was time for Richmond, Virginia’s magnificent Groove Metal institution LAMB OF GOD to pulverize our senses with the full play of their 2004 masterpiece Ashes of the Wake, and let me tell you that the city of London, Ontario simply loves Lamb of God from the bottom of their hearts. The reaction of the fans to each and every song played by D. Randall “Randy” Blythe on vocals, Mark Morton and Willie Adler on the guitars, John Campbell on bass and Art Cruz on drums was beyond superb, with the first three of the album, Laid to Rest, Hourglass and Now You’ve Got Something to Die For, already igniting some of the sickest mosh pits of the night. The show moved on majestically, with Randy delivering his trademark “WOOOOOO’s!” inspired by the iconic Ric Flair in between songs, while the fans kept running around like beasts inside the circle pit. And after Ashes of the Wake was over, the band crushed whoever was still alive with the classics Walk With Me in Hell and Redneck, crowning another spectacular performance by Randy and his crew in Canadian lands. As mentioned for Mastodon, I would love to see Lamb of God celebrating many more decades of Ashes of the Wake with amazing concerts like that, and maybe next time there will be less confusion in the communication between us and the organizers, and you readers can have some ass-kicking photos as well to enjoy.
