Strike back… The metal attack!

New year, same old savagery! That’s what you’ll get here at The Headbanging Moose during this promising year of 2024, and in order to start it with a bang let’s continue our annual tradition and kick off our metal lady of the month segment with a superb bassist that will surely put you to raise your horns and bang your heads in the name of heavy music. She’s such a badass woman that even her name rocks, and I’m more than sure you’ll love to listen to her rumbling bass guitar embellishing the airwaves wherever you go. I’m talking about Austria and Switzerland’s own Joey Roxx, a veteran metalhead who has been kicking some ass as the bass player for German Heavy Metal powerhouse Mystic Prophecy for almost a decade, delivering the goods and taking no prisoners in her quest for heavy music.

Born somewhere in time in the stunning country of Austria, but raised and currently living in Switzerland, our unstoppable Joey Roxx, whose real name is also a mystery to most of us, had her first memories related to music in general already at a very young age, mentioning the big, out-of-tune grand piano in her family’s living room as her earliest one, which was also the very first instrument she tried to play when she was still a little child. She also mentioned in one of her interviews that she remembers the music her parents used to play in their home during her childhood, citing a record by Reinhard Mey, a German Liedermacher (or “songmaker”, a German-style singer-songwriter) as one of the rare good moments of her parents’ albums, and also that her father used to “torment” her with the music by world renowned German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor Richard Wagner (due to the fact he was Hitler’s favorite composer, that became one of the worst memories of her early musical contact, symbolizing her punk soul already growing inside of her). In the end, she had to dig deep to find something that she was somehow allowed to listen to, saying that her parents have absolutely no influence on how she got into music, and that she had to listen to “her” music secretly. Furthermore, when she was around 11 or 12 years old, she had her very first contact with rock and metal music by becoming the drummer for a Gotthard/punk cover band at the girls’ boarding school that she attended.

Even though Mystic Prophecy was formed back in 2000 in Bad Grönenbach, Germany by frontman R. D. Liapakis (Valley’s Eve) together with together with Martin Albrecht (Valley’s Eve, Stormwitch, Rough), her career with the band began only in the year of 2015, having already released with the band the albums War Brigade (2016), Monuments Uncovered (2018), Metal Division (2020), and Hellriot (2023), plus the EP Hail to the King, in 2021, all available for a full and detailed listen on Spotify and on YouTube. Currently formed of frontman R.D. Liapakis and our metal diva Joey Roxx alongside Evan K and Markus Pohl on the guitars, and Hanno Kerstan on drums, the band plays a well-balanced and thrilling fusion of American Power Metal with classic Heavy and Thrash Metal, and all those elements can be easily recognized in their music as for example in the songs Hellriot, Azrael, Metal Attack, Demons of the Night, Unholy Hell, Dracula, Metal Division, Eye To Eye, Metal Brigade, and many more, as well as in this amazing live performance in Greece alongside Nightrage, Firewind and Rage back in 2017, all with Joey kicking some serious ass armed with her rumbling bass guitar.

Apart from her sensational metallic journey with Mystic Prophecy, she was also the founder and bassist for the band Hangmän’s Nooze (between 2008 and 2010); played bass for Kissin’ Black (between 2015 and 2016), Swiss Melodic Heavy Metal/Hard Rock act Paganini (between 2013 and 2019) and Swiss Melodic Heavy Metal/Hard Rock act Shezoo (between 2010 and 2014); and played bass live with German Melodic Heavy/Groove Metal act Souldrinker in 2014. In addition, she was also the rhythm guitarist for a band named Dezert Eaglez from 2005 until 2007, but again, there’s isn’t much available online about the band and their music (all it’s known is that it was just a teenage garage band, and that right now she’s also playing in a Black Sabbath tribute band called Lady Evyl, along some more.

As a teenager, Joey had posters of Sebastian Bach, Mike Tramp (of White Lion) and The Kelly Family (an Irish rock, pop and folk music music group consisting of a multi-generational family) hanging in her room, and she used to listen to a lot of Gotthard as well, with their song In The Name still having a special place in her heart. And speaking about The Kelly Family, it looks like Joey was a huge fan of their music, as she mentioned in an interview that they were the first concert she’s ever been to, and that she also has several of their albums in her private collection. She was not a fan of their music, though, it’s just that she was growing up in a small village in the Swissmountains, and didn’t have much options to consume music. In the early nineties there were only groups like Backstreet Boys or Spice Girls or the likes of these known to children, plus the Kelly Family, which was the only one who played live with real instruments, and as she was playing music since she was four she never got into what she herself likes to call “plastic dance performance/playback show” stuff, so The Kelly Family was the only logic thing to be into as a 10 year old kid. However, Joey turned into a Rush fangirl with time, considering them their favorite band, and Bravado her favorite song ever. As a matter of fact, when asked about three songs that should not be missing on a perfect mix tape, Joey obviously added Bravado to the list, complementing it with Battleship Chain, by The Georgia Satellites, and Get The Funk Out, by Extreme.

Furthermore, our dauntless bassist said that her first self-bought album was Down To Earth, by Rainbow, saying that “I thought the cover was beautiful. The music on it is even better.” She also considers Extreme the most underrated band of all time, and she’s very proud of having the album The Ship, by Swiss Progressive Heavy Rock band Tea, in her collection, signed by the band’s vocalist Marc Storace with the comment “But you’re far too young for that!” At her funeral, she said she wants the song I Hope They Serve Jack Daniels In Hell, by Bourbon Crow, to be played, and that a romantic evening must include the music by Belphegor (and no one knows if she was joking or not when she said that). She also said that she doesn’t like to listen to digital music, but only to CD’s and vinyl, enjoying CD’s while she’s driving and leaving all vinyl for when she’s at home; and by the way, when asked about which albums she would take to a deserted island, she said that she would never go to any island without her record collection. Her taste for good music goes on, as besides rock and metal music she’s also a fan of Blues and Southern Rock, Horror and Death Punk, Russian classical music, and honest pop music (“not the radio nonsense,” as per Joey herself), also saying that she doesn’t like all that “more show, less music” nonsense that happens with bands like Sabaton, Battle Beast and Powerwolf.

Joey is also an avid concert goer, of course whenever she’s not touring with Mystic Prophecy, mentioning Rush on the Snakes & Arrows Tour in 2007, Rush at Sweden Rock Festival in 2013, and (guess what!?) Rush on the Time Machine Tour in 2011 as her top three concerts of all time. I guess I don’t need to repeat that she’s indeed fanatic for the most important Canadian rock band of all time, right? As a matter of fact, she considers Canada  the country with the most “best of all time” bands, including not only Rush and Triumph, but also Honeymoon Suite, Aldo Nova, Loverboy, Devin Townsend and so on. On the other hand, she mentioned Mötley Crüe as one of the bands she doesn’t want to see live again, as the last time she saw them it was quite embarrassing for the band and their fans (despite Joey loving their music very much). She also mentioned that she can’t stand still at a concert by American Southern Rock band Dan Baird & Homemade Sin, or at a concert by any of Dan Baird’s bands. Not only an accomplished musician, Joey has also ventured through other industries and markets, all connected to rock and metal, and all related to the visual aspects of the business. For instance, she’s the creative designer at JR with the Scissorhands, crafting handmade, authentic Rock N’ Roll clothing; she’s the manager (or at least used to be the manager) at Roxx Off Concerts; and she’s also a former “mad hatter” (yes, like the character from Alice in Wonderland, designing cowboy hats and custom shirts) and custom cutter at Souls of Rock Clothing, showing all her versatility in our rock and metal universe. Although she lives and breathes music one hundred percent of her time, she mentioned in an interview that that she’s probably one of the few people who has never sung in the shower, and that there’s no such amount of alcohol in the world (by the way, she’s a a beer and single malt whiskey girl) that would make her sing along to a hit song (unless maybe Eisgekühlter Bommerlunder, a song by Die Toten Hosen). And last but not least, she said that if one day she ever gets married, she hopes there’s an Elvis there, because she will probably be drunk in Las Vegas with him as her best man. I thought Elvis is always supposed to be the priest at those famous Vegas weddings, but if Joey wants him to be her best man, who are we to go against one of the most versatile and badass bass players hailing from the current European heavy music scene, right? Jokes aside, this is just her way of saying that she will never ever get married and have a family, because the chances of her being drunk in Vegas again are pretty low to zero, and those marriages are not official in Europe and can be annulated within 24 hours, which FOR SURE would be the case if ever that might happen to her for some sort of strange reasons.

The Year In Review – Top 10 Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Albums of 2023

“Whatever your age may be, when you go to a heavy metal gig, you’re a teenager again.” – Rob Halford

I believe that quote from the Metal God himself perfectly represents the year of 2023 for most of us metalheads, including of course myself and my buddy Keith Ibbitson of Metal Paparazzi as we’ve been to countless metal gigs this year (and you can see detailed reviews with amazing professional photos for each one of them HERE), keeping our inner fires burning during such difficult times for the entire world. A never-ending economic crisis that’s dragging tons and tons of people to poverty everywhere, the Russo-Ukrainian War that persists for almost two years now, the extremely sad and inhumane Gaza–Israel conflict, all environmental disasters that in the end are all mankind’s fault, and so on. On the heavy music side, we witnessed the final concert ever by KISS, the end of great bands like The Agonist and Betraying the Martyrs, and the deaths of Sebastian Marino (former guitarist of Overkill and Anvil), Michael “Majk Moti” Kupper (former guitarist of Running Wild), Jon Kennedy (former bassist of Cradle of Filth and former vocalist of Hecate Enthroned), Hiroshi “Heath” Morie (bassist of X Japan), Charlie Dominici (former vocalist of Dream Theater), and several other talented musicians.

Despite all those losses, it was a very good year for heavy music, as bands kept fighting for rock and metal no matter what, putting on fantastic albums and memorable tours for us fans, with some already voicing their dissatisfaction against Live Nation and Ticketmaster for their sky-rocketing ticket prices, shady fees, and an obscure ticket reselling “mafia” running in the background that inflates those prices even more. In 2024 we’ll surely (and hopefully) see more of this insurgence against their ticket monopoly, and while we wait for that let’s enjoy The Headbanging Moose’s Top 10 Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Albums of 2023, excluding EP’s, best of’s and live albums, offering our avid ears the perfect soundtrack to every single moment in our lives, even if that moment is the apocalypse.

Album Review – Danko Jones / Electric Sounds (2023)

Toronto, Canada-based undisputed kings of balls-out Hard Rock and Rock N’ Roll are back to provide maximum satisfaction with their electrifying eleventh studio album.

Are you ready to rock? Do you want a good time? Do you want to get high? If the answer to any of those questions is yes (and it really should be), then Toronto, Canada-based undisputed kings of balls-out Hard Rock and Rock N’ Roll, collectively known as Danko Jones, are back to provide maximum satisfaction with their new album titled Electric Sounds, the eleventh studio effort in their career. Produced and mixed by Eric Ratz, mastered by Harry Hess at HBomb Mastering, and displaying a classy artwork by Martin Ander, Electric Sounds will slap you in the face with its endless electricity and power, all carefully brought into being by vocalist and guitarist Danko Jones (aka Rishi James Ganjoo), bassist John “JC” Calabrese, and drummer Rich Knox.

As already asked, are you ready for a Rock N’ Roll party together with Danko and his crew? That’s what you’ll get in the groovy Guess Who’s Back, with Danko declaiming the song’s acid lyrics while Rich dictate the song’s pace with his classic beats, followed by Good Time, another exciting, rockin’ extravaganza by the trio, with the bass by JC sounding thunderous while Danko keeps roaring the song’s fun chorus with tons of energy (“I came here to fuck shit up and have a good time”). Then the title-track Electric Sounds, featuring guest guitarist Daniel Dekay (from Canadian thrash legends Exciter), will take you on a wild musical ride together with the band, with Danko kicking some ass on vocals supported by the pounding drums by Rich. Then we have Get High?, featuring guest vocals by Damian Abraham (from Fucked Up), a song about the the legalization of marijuana in Canada that ends up being some sort of Rock N’ Roll anthem for potheads, showcasing solid riffs and strong bass lines; and let’s keep banging our heads with Danko Jones in Stiff Competition, bringing more of the band’s pounding but very melodic sounds, albeit not as thrilling as the rest of the album.

The band speeds things up and invite us all to slam into the pit to the sound of She’s My Baby, featuring guest vocals by Tyler Stewart (from Barenaked Ladies), a lesson in modern-day Rock N’ Roll and Hard Rock; whereas Eye For An Eye reminds me of some of the most recent songs by Danish rock titans Volbeat, which is obviously a good thing, with the guitars by Danko sounding amazing from start to finish. And adding an extra dosage of groove to their music it’s time for I Like It, a strip tease-fueled rock song where the beats by Rich will inspire you to bang your head like a maniac. The party has no time to stop, as the vibrant Let’s Make Out keeps the adrenaline level as high as it can be, with Danko once again kicking ass on vocals and with his classy riffs, while What Goes Around offers us all pure Rock N’ Roll flowing from all instruments, with the vocals by Danko matching perfectly with the rumbling kitchen by JC and Rich. Lastly, the trio will shake your city with their rockin’ sounds in Shake Your City, bringing forward one final round of their classic riffs, bass lines and beats and fills.

Cover your heads… No one escapes my hell… On all you know!

It’s time to make a lot of noise here at The Headbanging Moose, courtesy of our multitalented, unstoppable metal lady of this month of November. Pulling triple duty for Chicago, Illinois-based Noise Rock duo Djunah, simultaneously singing, playing the guitar, and playing a Moog bass organ with her feet (which is the reason why they like to say that they have “a leg for a bassist”), she will blow your mind with her undeniable charisma and skills, in special her powerful, unrestrained vocal style, channeling all her mental health issues through her music in the best way imaginable. Get ready to be absolutely stunned by the one and only Donna Diane, letting her music penetrate deep inside your soul and touch your heart in the name of our good old Rock N’ Roll.

Drawing a broad range of comparisons from PJ Harvey and Diamanda Galás to Melvins, the independent Noise Rock project Djunah (pronounced “JUNE-uh”) pairs Donna’s powerful, unrestrained vocal style with crashing guitar riffs and heavy, punishing drums courtesy of drummer Jared Karns (Their/They’re/There, Hidden Hospitals), blending elements from Noise Rock with Post-Metal, Post-Doom, Post-Hardcore and so on to give their sound a very unique taste. Known for their massive, intense live sound, the duo was formed back in 2018 fueled as much by big emotions as it is by love of gear. Donna and Jared have already released the singles Built and Brother, both in 2018 (and both also available as amazing videos on YouTube by clicking HERE and HERE, respectively), followed by their debut full-length album Ex Voto, in 2019, and more recently their sophomore effort Femina Furens, in the first quarter of 2023. Speaking about the single Brother, it’s important to say that the song not only features the voices of Anita Hill, Ana Maria Archila, Maria Gallagher and Christine Blasey Ford, but even more important than that, 100% of all sales are donated to Brave Space Alliance, the first Black-led, Trans-led LGBTQ+ center located on the South Side of Chicago. This is a very strong statement of the political and social aspect of the music by Djunah and the importance of discussing such themes to Donna, which means if you want to join her in her everyday fight against prejudice and inequality, you should definitely purchase the single from Djunah’s own BandCamp page. That’s a very good example of exactly how music can have a strong and lasting positive impact in our lives.

Their most recent opus, titled Femina Furens, also has a deep, emotional meaning to Donna. Femina Furens, which is Latin for “furious woman”, fuses influences from poetry the likes of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sylvia Plath and John Donne, and heavy music such as PJ Harvey, Hum and Neurosis to tell the story of diagnosis and continuing recovery from complex post-traumatic stress disorder, or C-PTSD, with its artwork being inspired by representations of the divine feminine in 1970’s Sci-Fi Metal art, particularly the work of French artist Philippe Caza for “Métal hurlant” (later republished in the United States as “Heavy Metal” magazine). Animals, chariots or sleighs, and mythological figures appear prominently on the album as a way of exploring themes of emotional regulation, power and control, some of the core features of trauma disorders.

“We’re heavy, noisy, and still fairly melodic. If you like aggressive guitar, big drum fills, and an even ratio of singing to shouting, you’ll probably like us,” commented Donna, and you can easily sense the impact of all of her main idols influences in the music by her beast Djunah. For instance, she listens to a lot of early and pre-war Blues, Soul and R&B, with some of her favourite singers being Tina Turner and Lou Rawls, while she also loves Bo Diddley. However, it’s not just music that inspires her. “I’d say the majority of my influences are nonmusical because it makes for more interesting art that way. Some influences are related to the gear I use and building songs around those sounds. Politics had an incredibly strong influence on the album – songs like Built, Bless Your Money, and Mirrors for Narcissists are good examples of that. Messing around with poetry and meter is also a big source of inspiration for me. The name Djunah actually derives from one of my favorite writers, Djuna Barnes, eternal queen of the ungodly long sentence.”

Donna is (or was) also part of a Chicago-based slashy, bass-Heavy Rock trio named Beat Drun Juel, where she’s responsible for the vocal and guitar duties while Jesse Giallombardo takes care of bass and Mat Haywood of drums. This project came before the creation of Djunah, having released so far a demo EP titled Off Your Face, back in 2014, followed by the two-track EP This Is How I Get Over You / That Boy Musta Stole Something of Mine, in 2015, and the full-length album Suppressor, in 2016, all available on their BandCamp page. Furthermore, you can also go to the project’s official YouTube channel and enjoy their videos for the songs That Boy Musta Stole Something of Mine, Hugger, and Die Unknown. I believe the band is either done or on hold due to Djunah, but you never know if or when Donna will revisit it in the near future.

Donna was also featured on Premier Guitar’s Rig Rundown back in 2020, where she talked about how she managed to learn how to play two instruments at the same time live, plus of course singing. “I actually dove right into it. The most time-consuming part was learning about synthesis because I’d never used an analog synthesizer before. I played a few solo shows with the bass organ first to see if it was something viable to do on stage. Then Nick and I started playing together, and it took us just a couple months to get a set together. I will say I’ve improved a lot over the two years I’ve been doing it. I’m constantly developing technique and changing my setup to help me to do more complex things. So, it’s always a work in progress,” commented our multi-talented diva, also saying that she believes people enjoy the show a lot in intimate settings when they can see what she’s doing up close. “It was definitely a case of necessity being the mother of invention. My old band had ground to a halt, and I wanted a way to play solo without sacrificing the bass. I don’t like using prerecorded sounds or loops, so I decided to try playing guitar and a bass synth simultaneously. It’s such a mindfuck – I love it!”

In April 2021, Donna opened up about being diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, or C-PTSD, a disorder caused by complex trauma, or multiple traumas sustained and repeated over time. “Complex trauma can take many forms, such as domestic violence or abuse in childhood (as in my case), and it can have painful, lifelong consequences,” commented Donna, who believes it’s extremely important for anyone suffering from their own sicknesses and traumas to search for help and support, also pointing out the importance of music in that process. “Every day, people come forward with personal stories about sexual assault or opioid addiction or mental illness, and we’re slowly learning as a society to embrace that vulnerability instead of shaming it and telling it to shut up. I want to make music that represents the power of that vulnerability. A lot of my life, I was told I was too sensitive and that being sensitive is weak. So, I killed off a lot of the feeling, in my heart and in my body, just to make it through the day. Reclaiming it and finding power in it has been incredibly healing for me. I think that’s why there’s a lot of sexuality in the music. Sex, to me, is the ultimate in combining sensitivity and power. There’s also a podcast named Conversations With Dwyer where Donna talks about playing in Chicago dive bars at 17, how she went from writing a novel to music, the DIY ascent of her band and her struggles with C-PTSD; and another one called Mid-Riff where Donna discusses inventing bass organ techniques, dressing like Steve Albini, mentorship, the impact of trauma therapy on music, and much more. Album Review – Sadistic Force / Midnight Assassin (2023)

This Texas-based three-piece Black and Thrash Metal outfit is ready to kill armed with their incendiary sophomore opus, inspired by true crime and 80’s slasher films.

Following the release of their critically-acclaimed 2021 debut album Aces Wild and an impressive 11-date UK tour, Austin, Texas-based three-piece Black/Thrash Metal horde Sadistic Force returned to Texas to work on their upcoming sophomore opus, titled Midnight Assassin. Recorded by J. Petri at Come and Track It, mixed by Noah Buchanan at Mercinary Studios, mastered by Joel Grind, and featuring a sick cover art by Timbul Cahyono, Midnight Assassin is an album positively dripping with sinister undertones brought into being by founder James Oliver on vocals and guitars (who fully immersed himself in the writing process, devouring countless hours of true crime and 80’s slasher films for inspiration), Blaine Dismukes on bass and backing vocals, and Jose Alcaraz on drums, being highly recommended for admirers of the darkest and most sulfurous side of Thrash and Speed Metal.

Composed and recorded by Long Island, New York-based Thrash Metal entity Electrocutioner, The Unseen Force is a cryptic intro that sets the stage for Sadistic Force to crush us all in Corpsewood Curse, with the razor-edged riffs by James together with the rumbling bass by Blaine inspiring us all to slam into the pit in the name of pure evil in a lecture in Blackened Thrash Metal. And the band shows no mercy for our souls with the demonic Speed Metal hymn Speeding Black Leather Hell, where Jose dictates the song’s thrashing pace and James delivers his raspy, dirty roars nonstop; whereas the title-track Midnight Assassin will put you to bang your head together with those American metallers, with the growls by James walking hand in hand with his own striking riffage. Then Jose kicks off the Motörhead-infused chant Nuremburg Nights, showcasing the band’s trademark guitars lines, rumbling bass and classic Thrash Metal drums.

There’s no sign of slowing down as they keep attacking our senses with their fusion of Black and Speed Metal in The Butcher’s Apron, a very technical yet extremely devilish creation by the trio highly recommended for some fun action inside the circle pit; and Blaine will smash your head with his metallic bass in Marked for Death, another song perfect for some vigorous headbanging spearheaded by the classic beats by Jose, sounding a lot more melodic than the other songs from the album. Their Rock N’ Roll vein arises in Campaign of Sin, with the guitar lines by James sounding sharp and incendiary in this fun mid-tempo tune, once again presenting a vibrant Motörhead taste that will certainly compel you to raise your horns, whereas closing this insane album of Thrash Metal we have Howl of the Horde, a hurricane of harsh roars, visceral riffs and crushing beats that will inspire even non-fans of this type of music to slam into the circle pit.

“Midnight Assassin is a record steeped in blood and terror,” said the band’s mastermind James Oliver. This comes as no surprise considering the source material with songs inspired by serial killers, stalkers and necrophiliacs, transporting the listeners into a dark and twisted sonic arena that exposes the harsh realities of human depravity and violence. Album Review – Primal Fear / Code Red (2023)

Like a phoenix arising from the ashes, the Teutonic masters of Power Metal are back in action with their thirteenth opus, a hard-hitting metal lesson and living proof of the healing power of music.

The phoenix arising from the ashes is a much-cited motif in cultural history; it seldom fits as well as it does with the triumphant return of Esslingen, Germany-based Power Metal masters Primal Fear armed with their thirteenth studio opus, titled Code Red, the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2020 album Metal Commando. Recorded and mixed by Sebastian Roeder, Mitch Kunz and Ralf Scheepers at Backyard Studios, mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios, and displaying a triumphant eagle of steel rising from the ashes in the artwork, which could definitely represent the rebirth of our beloved Mat Sinner, who almost lost his life a couple of years ago, Code Red is a hard-hitting metal lesson and living proof of the healing power of music and the brotherhood behind the riffs where vocalist Ralf Scheepers, bassist (and survivor) Mat Sinner, the triple guitar phalanx of Tom Naumann, Alex Beyrodt and Magnus Karlsson, as well as drummer Michael Ehré, blast us with a zeitgeisty manifesto that provides eleven essential arguments of why power metal will simply never go under.

Their Power Metal feast begins in full force with the headbanging Another Hero, where Ralf already showcases all his vocal range, not to mention the song’s catchy, singalong chorus (“Where is the savior who shows us the way / We need a guide back to sanity / In times like these without piece of mind / We need someone who stops this inhumanity / Another hero”); whereas Bring That Noise (originally called “The Flood” when details of the album were revealed) sounds even more melodic thanks to the great guitar job done by Magnus, Alex and Tom with their incendiary riffs and solos. Needless to say, it should work perfectly if played live. The second single of the album released a few weeks ago, the mid-tempo tune Deep in the Night, focuses on the power of the riff while Michael keeps pounding his drums with tons of precision, followed by Cancel Culture, where we face modern-day words roared by Ralf (“Into the circus of life we were pushed out of nowhere / Growing, maturing and loving and hating the game / Saddle the horse for a future that’s basically unknown / We procreate, viciate, twisting the facts without shame / Manipulating”) in almost seven minutes of classic, hammering Heavy and Power Metal for the masses. And those German metallers invest in a fun and vibrant Hard Rock and Rock N’ Roll vibe in the dancing and thrilling Play a Song, showcasing striking riffs and the always rumbling bass lines by the one and only Mat Sinner, proving why heavy music will always have a healing power for all of us metalheads.

It’s then time for a more introspective, darker song titled The World Is on Fire, with the band’s guitar triumvirate once again distilling their sharp and caustic riffs for our total delight. Put differently, it’s classic Primal Fear with no shenanigans spearheaded by Ralf’s trademark soaring vocals. Acoustic guitars then set the tone in Their Gods Have Failed, before the music evolves into a Doom Metal-infused sound that reminds me of some of the best Black Sabbath songs with Dio on vocals; whereas another epic intro explodes into sheer Power Metal magic in Steelmelter, with Magnus, Alex, Tom and Mat kicking some serious ass armed with their stringed weapons, making it clear why Primal Fear always thrive when they focus on a more straightforward sonority. They keep blasting their instruments in great fashion in Raged by Pain, where Ralf will pierce your ears with his high-pitched screams, resulting in another strong contender to be part of their upcoming live performances. The band slows things down and brings forward a power ballad titled Forever (by the way, one more ballad named “Forever” in the rock and metal world), a decent song where Ralf steals the spotlight as usual, although not as good as all of their other ballads form previous albums. Last but not least, those Teutonic rockers get back on track with their metallic, razor-edged Power Metal in Fearless, led by the classic beats by Michael and, therefore, positioning it as an excellent tune for some vigorous headbanging.

In a nutshell, Code Red (which is available for a full listen on YouTube and on Spotify) represents much more than just another powerful album in their undisputed career; it’s an inspiring and emotional opus for everyone who follows Primal Fear and was extremely worried about the health and the fate of the band’s mastermind Mat Sinner. Fortunately, the gods of metal seem to be on Mat’s side, allowing him to be the band’s own phoenix and get back in action alongside his loyal bandmates to provide us with more of their electrifying Heavy Metal. Hence, don’t forget to give the guys form Primal Fear a shout on Facebook and on Instagram, and to grab your copy of another incendiary blast of heavy music by those German metallic eagles from the Atomic Fire Records website or by clicking HERE. A lot of people thought this Power Metal steel eagle was dead and gone after what happened with Mat, but of course they were absolutely wrong, and Code Red is among us to remind us why they’ve been one of the most powerful names of the scene since their inception back in the 90’s. As they say in their new album, when the whole world feels wrong, just play a song (by Primal Fear)!

Worst moments of the album: Forever.

Concert Review – Godsmack (Budweiser Stage, Toronto, ON, 08/08/2023)

After a (very) long wait, Alternative Rock and Metal giants Godsmack were finally back in Toronto for another memorable night of first-class music, bugs, tequila, and a huge amount of fire.

OPENING ACTS: Mix Master Mike and Staind

As I like to say, there’s only one day of the week that is worse than Monday for concerts, and that’s Tuesday. And guess what? Tuesday was the day chosen by GODSMACK with guests MIX MASTER MIKE and STAIND to visit the city of Toronto during their North American tour this summer, literally setting the Budweiser Stage on fire. Well, the weather was perfect, friends and family (and a beautiful service dog wearing headphones due to the loud music!) were all together celebrating music and life, there was plenty of food and drinks for everyone, and it’s still summer, so I believe we can forget it’s a Tuesday and enjoy some first-class music like it’s Friday or Saturday night, right?

The doors opened really early for a weekday, more specifically at 5pm, which in the end was good because that avoided huge lines and people hushing to get to the concert, and gave everyone plenty of time for some drinks and to take a look at the merch stands. Due to the fact Nothing More were not able to join Godsmack on this tour as one of the openers as originally planed, San Francisco, California’s own MIX MASTER MIKE (aka Michael Schwartz, known for his work with The Beatie Boys) accepted the challenge to replace a rock band with his fusion of Hip Hop and Rap Rock, hitting the stage at 6:30pm with his turntables, a lot of energy, and delivering a solid performance with his own twist of classics by The Beastie Boys, Aerosmith, Rush and Queen, among others. Would it have been better if the opener was a proper rock band instead of a DJ? Maybe, but no one can say Mix Master Mike didn’t put on quite a show on stage last night.

Then at around 7:25pm it was time for Springfield, Massachusetts-based Alternative Rock/Metal act STAIND to put everyone to dance with songs from their entire discography since their inception in 1995. The band formed of vocalist and guitarist Aaron Lewis, guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist Johnny April and drummer Sal Giancarelli will release a new album on September 15 this year named Confessions Of The Fallen, including in their setlist the first single of the album, the opener Lowest in Me, which was well-received by their fans; however, the crowd was obviously waiting for their classics, and of course they didn’t disappoint, including in their setlist the hits So Far Away, It’s Been Awhile, and the closing song Mudshovel. The music by Staind is too mellow for me personally (as I’m a lot more into extreme music, as you might know), but I can’t complain at all about their performance, and I’m sure their diehard fans were also very satisfied with what those guys did on stage yesterday.

GODSMACK

Finally, after 17 long years, Boston, Massachusetts’ Alternative Rock and Metal titans GODSMACK were back in Toronto (as they had only played in Ottawa and Hamilton in the province of Ontario since 2006), and although they were supposed to have hit the stage at around 9:10pm, it wasn’t until maybe 9:30pm that Sully Erna, Tony Rombola, Robbie Merrill and Shannon Larkin began their breathtaking, incendiary concert. In addition, due to the length of their performance I saw a lot of people leaving the concert before the end to be able to catch the last trains, buses and streetcars home, or simply because they had to wake up really early today to work. That wasn’t a big issue, of course, but maybe next time we have a concert on a Tuesday night in the city the bands can make sure their concerts end by 11pm at the latest.

Back to the concert, Godsmack kicked some serious ass from start to finish, blending songs form all of their amazing albums with their newest beast Lighting Up the Sky. From the very first beats of the opener When Legends Rise to the epic I Stand Alone, it was an avalanche of riffs, horns in the air, screams, and a lot of interaction between Sully and the crowd, making the Toronto show feel very personal and, therefore, making Sully feel at home and extremely comfortable while chatting with the fans in between songs. There was also a lot of fire, specially when they played my favorite song of their setlist, the high-octane 1000hp, and according to my friend Keith Ibbitson of Lower Eastside Photography, responsible for all the amazing photos of this review, those flames made the pit feel like a true BBQ.

Cryin’ Like a Bitch!! And You and I also worked extremely well last night, and before playing the classic Something Different the unstoppable Sully took a lot of time to talk to the crowd about how awesome it was to be back to Toronto, “complained” about the bugs and mosquitoes (even joking by asking if the Canadian mosquitoes were poisonous, and having a shot of tequila to clean his palate after swallowing a bug), and asked all the men at the venue, specially the ones who like to work out at the gym, to put their ladies on their shoulders to enjoy the song from a much better spot. After that it was a nonstop rock and metal party by Godsmack, from the dark and sexy sounds of Voodoo to the beautiful message from the song Bulletproof. And in the middle of all that, there was time for Sully and Shannon to stun us all with their famous Batalla de Los Tambores, a fuckin’ awesome “duel” full of groove where they also played some snippets of classic by AC/DC, Aerosmith and Metallica for the delight of all fans present at the Budweiser Stage, followed by a heavy and electrifying cover version for one of the biggest hits by The Beatles, the excellent Come Together.

However, the most memorable moment for me and for several of the fans at the venue happened when Sully sat down at his piano for the superb ballad Under Your Scars and talked a little about their work with The Scars Foundation, dedicating the song to all those we’ve lost to suicide, depression and all types of mental illnesses, and also to our rock and metal fallen brothers like Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Dimebag Darrell and Eddie Van Halen. I saw some people crying after the song was over, most probably because the theme made them remember some dark moment of their lives, showing how music is extremely important for all of us and how we should always search for help whenever we feel anything in our lives is not right. Godsmack will keep sending that beautiful message everywhere they go with this tour (and all of their upcoming tours), including London, Ontario on October 19 (which is less than two hours from Toronto, so why not?), and may they keep bringing joy, hope and strength to anyone in need with their breathtaking Rock N’ Roll.

Edit: A few days after the review was published, a guy named Barry contacted us to inform Emma is the name of his service dog, and that she will be 2 years old in October. She has already been on a plane, she’s met the Maple Leafs, and will be going to The Smashing Pumpkins, 50 Cent and then Wu-Tang Clan this year. Barry suffers from mental health issues, but Emma has made his life a lot better! She is his princess and allows him to have a second chance at life! Way to go, Barry and Emma! Album Review – Raven / All Hell’s Breaking Loose (2023)

All hell is breaking loose to the sound of the fifteenth studio album by one of the most iconic bands from the UK scene, offering ten crisp, visceral metal classics fused with riffs, twists, turns and chaos.

Prepare yourself for a metal rampage the likes of which you haven’t enjoyed in many a year, as New Wave of British Heavy Metal stalwarts Raven have just delivered the electric mayhem of All Hell’s Breaking Loose, their fifteenth studio album offering ten crisp, visceral metal classics, each fused with riffs, twists, turns, chaos and more hooks than all the Hellraiser movies combined. Formed of the Newscatle, England iconic brothers John Gallagher on lead vocals and bass and Mark Gallagher on the guitars, alongside American drummer extraordinaire Mike Heller, Raven are giving permission for everyone to remember exactly what it’s like to lose yourself in the healing aural waters of supreme metal music in their new album, resplendent in sweat-soaked denim and leather.

Medieval is an uncompromised, in-your-face metal attack by the trio where Mike proves why he’s been the perfect drummer for Raven since joining the band in 2018, resulting in a classic and ass-kicking fusion of Heavy and Speed Metal to properly kick things off, whereas Mike dictates the pace in Surf the Tsunami, with Mark delivering sheer electricity through his riffs and, therefore, providing John with everything he needs to distill his trademark vocals. Turn of the Screw is a lot groovier than its predecessors thanks to the great job done by John on bass, while Mark keeps blasting his fiery riffs nonstop, and it’s old school Raven for the masses in the title-track All Hell’s Breaking Loose, with John and Mark being in total sync armed with their stringed weapons, resulting in a fantastic option for igniting some fun mosh pits during their live performances. And those veterans show no sign of slowing down in The Far Side, another fast and thrilling creation with Mike stealing the spotlight with his intricate drumming.

They keep pressing the gas pedal hard in Desperate Measures, another one that should sound amazing if played live, showcasing their signature riffs and raspy vocals, whereas one more round of their frantic Speed Metal comes in the form of Victory’s Call, with the trio blasting first-class heavy music spearheaded by the razor-edged riffs by Mark while also showcasing spot-on beats and backing vocals. Edge of a Nightmare is a fun and vibrant Rock N’ Roll party by those veterans where we’re all invited to simply enjoy the wicked vocals by John and slam into the circle pit like true metalheads, followed by Invasion, the second to last song of the album, offering more of their solid Heavy Metal albeit not as electrifying as the rest of the album. Finally, one final explosion of Heavy and Speed Metal will hit you hard in the head in Go for the Gold, where Mike takes the lead with his furious drums accompanied by the rumbling bass by John.

“You got three guys with very strong, passionate, opinions, and when those are brought together, it’s a case of ‘iron sharpens iron’,” commented Mark about the energy around the band and how that impacts their creative process, with John adding “we’re very hard on ourselves, it had to be ‘all killer, no filler’. A perfect summer night in Toronto always demands a good dosage of first-class Rock N’ Roll, and Volbeat provided their fans in the city with exactly what they needed to enjoy it to the fullest.

OPENING ACT: Halestorm

I’ll start this review by saying that the city of Toronto definitely needs more open air concerts and festivals during the summer. It’s such a great vibe and feeling, and everyone always has an amazing time. It’s hard to understand why there are very few rock and metal concerts like that in the city. Well, last night at the RBC Echo Beach that great atmosphere happened once again when HALESTORM and VOLBEAT kicked some serious ass with the first concert of their brand new Servant of the Road World Tour 2023, and all the action going on and off stage turned it into a memorable night for everyone who were desperate for some good old Rock N’ Roll and Heavy Metal (as most bands seem to be playing at the famous European festivals at the moment, completely ignoring Toronto and the rest of Canada right now).

The weather was beyond perfect, we all had a nice view of the CN Tower in the background, and shortly after 7pm Lzzy Hale and her henchmen, collectively known as Red Lion, Pennsylvania, United States-based Hard Rock/Rock N’ Roll outfit HALESTORM, hit the stage for a very energetic and fun performance, beautifully warming up the crowd for the main attraction of the night, Volbeat. Currently promoting their 2022 album Back from the Dead, the quartet put on a flawless show playing songs from their entire career, with songs like I Miss the Misery and the closing one The Steeple inspiring everyone at the RBC Echo Beach to raise their horns together with the band. Lzzy has some respectful pipes, we all must admit that, as the girl can powerfully sing and scream without any effort, but let’s say it was her brother Arejay who stole the show with a spot-on drum solo, even using some giant drumsticks that looked like baseball bats. In other words, when Halestorm take your city by storm, you better be there to witness one of the best bands of the current Rock N’ Roll scene.

VOLBEAT

It was around 9pm when Copenhagen, Denmark’s own Heavy Metal/Rock N’ Roll institution VOLBEAT kicked off their Servant of the Road World Tour 2023 in North America with a beyond fun and thrilling performance. By the way, it was their first performance in the city since 2019 when they played alongside Behemoth, Gojira and Slipknot, and it was more than clear how eagerly all fans had been waiting to see Volbeat live again. In addition, if you follow the band you probably know that with the departure of longtime guitarist Rob Caggiano in the beginning of June the whole tour almost had to be cancelled, but thanks to the talented Danish guitarist Flemming C. Lund (of bands like Temple of Scorn and The Arcane Order), who stepped in and learned all songs in just a few weeks, the band will be able to follow their schedule without any issues. Kudos to Flemming for being so professional, skillful, charismatic, and also for sporting a nice The Number of the Beast shirt on his first-ever concert with Volbeat! UP THE IRONS, FLEMMING!

Back to the concert itself, Volbeat ignited their breathtaking performance with the classic The Devil’s Bleeding Crown, winning the hearts of the fans right away and making it extremely easy for them to keep the energy level truly high until the very end, blending classics the likes of Seal the Deal and Lola Montez with the new songs from their 2021 album Servant of the Mind, those being Temple of Ekur, Shotgun Blues, The Devil Rages On, Becoming and Wait a Minute My Girl, and by the way all sounded amazing live and inspired the crowd to start some sick and frantic circle pits. As I always say, all metalheads in Toronto love circle pits, period. The song Black Rose, featuring the one and only Danko Jones as a guest vocalist, and Hallelujah Goat, one of my favorite Volbeat songs of all time, also helped to elevate the level of adrenaline on and off stage, proving Volbeat are a band who was born to play live.

I must admit the circle pit action was a little scary due to the type of floor at the RBC Echo Beach, which is not sand in case you’re curious to know, but pure, hard and rough cement, and every single time someone fell to the floor the word “merthiolate” would come to my mind. Fortunately, nothing truly serious happened, and all the kids and veterans who bravely entered the pit had some memorable moments inside of it. Well, not everyone, as Kevin, brother of my buddy Keith Ibbitson of Lower Eastside Photography, was hit by surprise and had his nose broken and swollen, requiring first-aid attention from the Live Nation medical staff. We can’t say it wasn’t a memorable moment for him, right? Jokes aside, I’m sure he’ll recover quickly and get back in action inside the pit at any future concert in the city.

The encore by Michael Poulsen and his henchmen was awesome as expected, starting with the classic Fallen, which he always dedicates to his deceased father Jørn Poulsen, followed by the aforementioned Wait a Minute My Girl, For Evigt (which Michael mentioned is about enjoying our lives), and of course ending with Still Counting, where Michael asked everyone at the RBC Echo Beach to sing its lyrics along with him. After all was said and done, everyone had a big smile on their faces due to the stunning performance by Volbeat, but due to the preparations for the Honda Indy in Toronto this weekend most fans had to find some extra inner fuel for a very long walk to the parking lots as we couldn’t simply cross through the BMO Field like countless times before. That wasn’t entirely bad or boring because the view of the city and the lake were fantastic, and of course I guess everyone was still singing one of the songs from Volbeat inside their heads to conclude another excellent Wednesday of summer in Toronto.

Album Review – Vonavibe / Bleed To Life (2023)

Enjoy this first-class album of Heavy Rock full of addictive hooks, intricate dynamics, clever drum pattering and diverse vocals all carefully brought into being by three skillful Greek rockers.

A Heavy Modern Rock band formed in 2016 in Athens, Greece, Vonavibe are more than ready to rock with their debut full-length album titled Bleed To Life, containing gargantuan proportions of heavy (and ultimately satisfying) chock ‘n’ gravel rock sounds that bring to mind all our favorite bars, beaches, arenas and rock festivals. Produced, recorded, and mixed by the band’s own vocalist and guitarist Dyon at Red Toy Studio, and mastered by John Christodoulatos at Sweetspot Productions, the album showcases all the talent and passion for Heavy Rock by the aforementioned Dyon together with John Tass on the lead guitars and George Andrian on drums, offering our avid ears addictive hooks, intricate dynamics, clever drum pattering and diverse vocals, all carefully brought into being by such talented Greek trio.

Somber Stoner Rock and Metal guitar lines ignite the band’s rockin’ feast in Left For Dead, with Dyon kicking some ass with his Hard Rock inspired vocals while John delivers striking solos for our total delight, followed by Run n’ Hide, the perfect tune for hitting the highway on a Harley Davidson feeling the wind on your face, with the amazing beats by George being nicely complemented by the song’s metallic bass lines. Then we have Vonavibe, the song that carries the name of the band, offering more of their classic Hard Rock sounds led by the slashing riffage by Dyon and John; and the trio slows things down and offer our ears the delicate ballad Hold On, showcasing Dyon’s smoother side on vocals while the instrumental parts exhale melancholy. After such melodious moment, it’s time for their rendition for The Rolling Stones’ classic Paint It Black (check the original version HERE), presenting a superb job done by the trio by keeping the song’s essence intact while adding their own Greek Hard Rock twist to it, with George crushing his drums in great fashion.

All That Remains is another classic Rock N’ Roll tune with an edgier vibe thanks to the raspy vocals by Dyon, always supported by the solid riffs and beats by his bandmates, whereas the trio then delivers one more dark song titled Beyond Tolerance, starting in a very somber manner to the introspective vocals by Dyon while John adds tons of feeling and groove to the music when things get heavier. In Break Your Sky they bring forward more of their fusion of classic Rock N’ Roll with Sludge Rock and Metal nuances, keeping the album at a high level of heaviness and electricity, and let’s keep banging our heads to the piercing riffage by Dyon and John in Song 9, while George hammers his drums in the name of Rock N’ Roll. Finally, closing the album we have Alive, offering more of their Hard Rock riffs and beats while Dyon keeps declaiming the song’s lyrics with tons of passion and John fires a soulful solo, resulting in eight minutes of first-class rock music for the masses.
